Japan poised to shoot down North Korean missile

North Korea announced that it may postpone the controversial launch of a long-range rocket and it's presumed that heavy snowfall may have slowed North Korean rocket launch preparations and Japan deployed the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) system as a precautionary measure to meet the threat, which is similar to Israel's Iron Dome defence system activated during the recent conflict with Hamas but North Korea carefully avoided targeting Japan in the last satellite launch and it's unlikely to provoke Japan into taking further action by the planned rocket launch.

The Iron Dome and PAC 3 are quite different

Iron Dome defends agains smaller shorter range missles, like that used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. It is to my knowledge not effective against longer range and larger ballistic missles (Scud or larger)

PAC3 is the opposite, it is designed to engage Scud and similar missiles, and would be ineffetive against Grad missiles

Starving people are desperate. Never fight someone who has nothing to lose.

The whole country, including the military are suffering from lack of food.
Even with all the weapons of the world, they can't get far on starving soldiers.

What laws of physics are those?

The problems with fighting North Korea are many. First, North Korea has nearly 4 million brainwashed soldiers who will fight to the death. To compare, the US has about 26,000 paid troops in South Korea and a population who doesn't like the idea of bloodshed.

Second, North Korea is mostly mountains. Fighting in the mountains is extremely difficult, especially for an invader. Just think - they know where all the little caves are, where all the mountain passes are, etc. They are used to the cold, the dry, etc.

Third, the last time we tried to fight a war in Korea (the 1950's), China came to the aid of North Korea. China shares a border with North Korea, so they could potentially pour millions of troops in to that country. Meanwhile, the United States is separated from North Korea by the Pacific Ocean.

China could pour food, weapons, and soldiers in to North Korea to such an extent that war would be impossible for us to win.

Ok, well, not to be a dick, but the laws of physics put a hard cap on the amount of fighting they could do.

The one where you can't create energy from nothing.
People without food can only fight for so long.

Then they die from not having food.

Yes, with China's support they could definitely hold on.
Without, they would fail.

Engaging NK in a land conflict would be foolish.
Air superiority is what would win it.

They threatened to take action against North Korea when I was there, right before NK shot a missile over Japanese airspace. The first stage booster landed in Japanese waters. They're pissed off like everyone else. Even China and Russia gave NK the business in that round.

Ok..I wasnt aware of that thanks for the info

Air superiority is great to have, but it won't be enough. You can only do so much from the air. Think Vietnam. We had air superiority but what did it matter? In many ways, this is similar to Vietnam... except the deck is stacked even more in the other guy's favor.

China...

In my opinion, would not allow any sort of war against North Korea without their direct involvement. So, any hope of a 2 week victory is naive at best. The reason North Korea even exists is because of China.

North Korea is going to do what they always do...grandstand to get attention. They seem to do it every few years or so, but nothing major happens.

Japan has a right to shoot down any incoming missile that crosses into its air space. They can choose to retaliate if they want, but I don't think they have any desire to go into another war unless there was no other option.

I don't like that the United States is over there, but we have been for many year. Since we now pretty much have to stay for an economic partnership with South Korea...what are our options? I would say try and maintain peace as best as possible.

Just my grossly uninformed opinion, but we wouldn't have to put any boots on the ground to mash them up.
Of course SK, would need to dig in to hold the line, but I'm still certain a joint attack force would **** them up quick.

It's not that easy. Much of NK's military infrastructure is inside of mountainous terrain.

I am actually quite glad we are in S.Korea. We provide a moderating duty there that no one else is willing or would be able to do. Since our country is so far away, we can act as a moderater versus someone located in the region which may act in a more defensive / offensive manner just due to the threat of how close they are to N.Korea. We can act with cooler heads, so we end up being a moderating force in the region. That is one of the reasons our presence in asia is so important.
