Japan poised to shoot down North Korean missile

I wouldn't be so sure, they have one of the largest armies in the world, and if I remember correctly the most, or near most number of artillery cannons. They clearly eventually would lose, but I certainly don't think that it would be that fast.

I'm not suggesting we go to war, but we've heard this before about Iraq. Remember what happened there? When's the last time NK really shot a bullet, about 50 years ago? We shot ours yesterday, and we're a lot better at it. And btw, SK has a huge army too, very huge.

Of course, but I really think we've had enough war for a while. I'd like to avoid ground combat at all costs.

We couldn't possibly stop all that artillery before it obliterated a good portion of SK.

Why is everyone freaking out about this? Isnt this supposed to be a missile that is going to launch a satalite? Is there any proof that actually points that this is something else?

Seems the whole world is getting frisky trigger fingers...somehow someone make this out to the fault of the United States or Israel.

[h=2]The Japanese government has ordered its military to shoot down the missile that is expected to be launched by North Korea as early as monday

Same crap, different day. Nothing is going to happen.

Because satellite tests, and the types of rockets you need to build them, is the perfect precursor and staging ground for ICBM development. And we all hate North Korea. Intensely.

... order to destroy the missile should any part of it threaten to fall onto Japanese territory ...
that emphasized portion is salient to the conversation
japan is only exercising prudent self defense
just as iran does when it shoots down American drones flying in iranian air space

there is absolutely no love lost between the japanes and the koreans ... doesn't matter, north or south ... so japan is not going to refuse to defend its territory out of concern its action might provoke an attack on SK by NK

and should such an attack scenario unfold, is there a place on the planet where the use of tactical nuclear weapons might be found more acceptable

They'd be decimated in a week.
Think that Iraq was steam rolled, these guys wouldn't stand a chance.

With hundred of thousands of South Korean lives lost. Good plan!

Do us all a favor, join the military and get stationed in Korea. Maybe then you will actually have a clue about the REAL dangers that North Korea presents.

I altered my position.

That still doesn't change the fact that the NK military, is archaic comparatively speaking, and that they would be steam rolled.

this is the first sign of a probable 3rd world war

The large cities of South Korea would be toast too, that's the problem. The North has 1000's of missiles poised for that very purpose.

Yea I didn't think about that initially.
I think it really depends on the type of rockets/missiles being used and if SK has any rocket/missile defense systems in place.
I'm sure they do, but not sure about how effective they would be.

You were stationed in Seoul for a bit, weren't you Snake? (you are Snake, aren't you?) How do you think an US and Co. assault on North Korea would go down? Would the ensuing artillery bombardment on Seoul be devastating?

But then what? Someone's gonna have to administer NK, and with a starving population bred on fear and ignorance, that's not going to be an easy task.

Deja Vu.

Gee, didn't we say the same thing about Iraq, and we are still there.....getting our arses financially kicked, and the loss of US life.

North Korea is none of our business.....again.

The Iraqi military fell in like 2 weeks.

Lets be completely clear, I'm not saying we should invade them.
I'm saying we could obliterate them in short order.

Yeah, I'm Snake. I was stationed in Seongnam for two years, roughly 45 minutes from Seoul depending on traffic. Not sure how an Allied assault will begin, since it would have to be in retaliation to an attack from the North, but with the way Seoul is structured, a bombardment would be devastating. Peace is sustainable, because it has to be sustained.

The situation over there is one of rocky stability. We know what happens if we attack, they know what happens if they attack. Both South and North are backed by major military superpowers (for lack of a better description), neither of which desire war. Tens of millions will die if a conflict is initiated, so we maintain the status quo for the sake of those lives.

North Korea announced that it may postpone the controversial launch of a long-range rocket and it's presumed that heavy snowfall may have slowed North Korean rocket launch preparations and Japan deployed the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) system as a precautionary measure to meet the threat, which is similar to Israel's Iron Dome defence system activated during the recent conflict with Hamas but North Korea carefully avoided targeting Japan in the last satellite launch and it's unlikely to provoke Japan into taking further action by the planned rocket launch.

Its not the same thing a different day in that I cant remember Japan taking this kind of stance any time recently..they have always been very kit gloves in dealing with N Korea...makes me wonder if they know more than they are saying

It is our business because of Skorea..its been our business for decades...this isnt something new

They threatened to take action against North Korea when I was there, right before NK shot a missile over Japanese airspace. The first stage booster landed in Japanese waters. They're pissed off like everyone else. Even China and Russia gave NK the business in that round.

I would expect China to screech loudly and send us a quiet thank you note. They are obligated to support their Communist neighbor verbally but I think they are actually scared of these loony-tunes.

It would be quite satisfying to give them what they've been asking for... but China would get seriously pissed.
