I applaud the officer, great human being.

These are the guys that get lost in all the reports of corrupt cops. I'm glad this officer's story has been told so that people who've lost faith in the police know that there are good ones out there.

This isn't what you thought it was in our day of ridiculous fear mongering and general negative spin given to us by our news sources. Personally, this story immediately brought tears to my eyes. This is one of the kindest acts I've ever seen.

Thanks for posting that marine...Police officers give more than the public could ever imagine...clothing, money and in large sums...there were constantly collections in the precinct for people we knew were hurting badly in the community and cops would go to business's and ask for their help for people.....I cant tell you how many cold nights I sent my guy s out to scour the homeless villages and take them to shelters and at times to lock them up for a night to keep them from freezing....to us its nothing special its what weve always done....theres good and yes theres sometimes bad

Thank you for your service. As a Marine, I appreciate the dedication required to be a police officer.

Thanks for posting this, Marine. It is important that police malfeasance is publicized due to their positions of power. And the internet has certainly highlighted just how common it can be.

But that said, it is also important that we applaud those that do go above and beyond and those that do live by the ethos “To Serve and Protect”.

Officer DePrimo is a good man. He is also young. It takes a special kind of person to do that job for many years and not become jaded. I hope he is one of those special ones. I don’t think I could do it.

Saw that earlier today. Talk about going above and beyond the call, true public servant. :peace

Pshhh ****ing bum getting a government handout!! Entitlement society!!! :scared:

Completely different, the officer used his own funds in a charitable act. Perfectly in line with libertarian philosophy and he performed a good deed. Nothing more to say.

I was being sarcastic..... .

Exactly wrong. In your view, what SHOULD have happened is that officer should have stopped ever person walking by, taken $10 for each at threat of arrest, and paid for the shoes that way - claiming he was the one being charitable, while cursing the heartless people he had robbed for being too greedy.

Very good show. Good cops rarely get play, but it's good to see that there are some willing to take care of their fellow man.

Sarcasm or not, this isn't the kinda thread for that. You will turn it into just another flame thread. Lay off it man.

If it wasn't for the tourist taking a picture of the interaction we would have never known about this. That policeman is the real deal.

He did a press conference about his decision. Light on anything other than what he did and how he did it, I'm not a body language expert but he was very sincere IMO and seems like a legit good guy.

You know, that's what's great about it. I love guys that don't look for recogntion for the things they do. This guy's awesome.

It's nice to see the media focusing on someone doing something good for once.

Why is almost everybody focused on this guys profession?
He was a Police Officer, so what?
It is just a guy with the good heart, and except for it putting him in the right place, at the right time, his profession really has nothing to do with this.

for me it WAS significant
a young policeman
likely working in the dregs of society
makes it pretty easy to no longer see the suffering that goes on there
but he still saw it
and more importantly, responded to the man's plight

This was not a gov't handout, this was a private person freely giving of his own funds to one clearly in need of a helping hand. This is an example of private charity, a one time personal gift, not gov't spewing funds on a regular monthly basis to those that "need" help to maintain a standard of living well beyond what they "earn".

People of all professions become jaded. So what?
His profession has absolutely nothing to do with his good heart.

You most likely could say his good heart is why he chose that profession.
But the profession itself does not matter to his act of kindness.

And as for the jaded view. The article gave it to us by quoting a respondent to the story.
"Clever stunt!" ... "The hobo is 'parked' at the entrance of a shoe shop."
And there is a good chance the reflection is accurate in that that is exactly why the guy placed himself there.
To play on passerby's heart strings. That is; to manipulate others.
And the Police Officer was just a sucker who fell for it.

yes, i hope for everyone's sake he was not being played for a sucker
don't think the cop would be so nice the second time out

but the reality is we do not do the good deed for the person. we do it to help ourself
which is why many of us are inclined to help when asked rather than turn a deaf ear in case we are being played
