Bobby Jindal: GOP Should 'Stop Being The Stupid Party'

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal hurled harsh criticism at his own party after the GOP was blindsided in the 2012 elections, telling Republicans to end "dumbed-down conservatism" by putting a stop to "offensive, bizarre" comments.
“It is no secret we had a number of Republicans damage our brand this year with offensive, bizarre comments -- enough of that,” Jindal told Politico. “It’s not going to be the last time anyone says something stupid within our party, but it can’t be tolerated within our party. We’ve also had enough of this dumbed-down conservatism. We need to stop being simplistic, we need to trust the intelligence of the American people and we need to stop insulting the intelligence of the voters.”
Jindal told Politico Republicans should “stop being the stupid party” by working to embrace a larger group of constituents rather than becoming the party of "big anything."
The GOP governor criticized the idea that the GOP is "the party that simply protects the rich." Jindal even took a jab at Mitt Romney's now-infamous "47 percent" remarks, noting Republicans would have to be more inclusive going forward.

Equivalent to asking the sky to stop being blue.

He is wrong on substance, that the GOP is the party that simply protects the rich, and that voters are intellegent. He is right that if you want to get people to vote for you, you have to pander. He wont ever get my vote, though. I respect honesty and logic, not spin and emotion.

I think you can have honesty and integrity without going down the "legitimate rape" route.

Some people mentioned his name for this year. I wonder if he's got an eye on 2016?

If he does will we get birthers wanting to see his birth certificate?

If memory serves me right his parents hadnt long got off the plane before he was born.

The question of whether that birth occurred on an Air India 747 or a Continental Airlines 737 will be the latest conservative obsession in 2016.

foxnews told you that huh

You see if u tax sumbuddy 28% but den u give em an unemploymint check its gift but its OK to tax sumbuddy 14% thats hard work

Thats a perfect example of the opposite. Instead of addressing the substance of the difference between violent rape and statutory rape, people focused on the gotcha of assuming there isnt one. Jindals advice is to avoid anything that might be controversial or politically incorrect. I think thats the problem with politics today.

Politics IS perception. I hate to say it, but an election IS a popularity contest. That's what Jindal's getting at - if you say dumb things that make people think badly of you, you're gonna lose. If you lose, your principles don't mean a whole bunch.

Look, you guys can either go on about "The evil media getting their 'gotcha!'" or you can man up and stop saying things like "legitimate rape."

We're seeing more and more Republicans saying things like this. It seems that there might be hope for the GOP, after all. Seems like they're actually listening to the American people, for once.

Jindal's recommendation, though well-intentioned is unrealistic. The GOP is only on the map at all because it's mastered the art of pandering to morons (who are mostly on the right). States that have the most morons along with the states that have equally as many morons as educated folk (i. e. the swing states) are the only ones the GOP can hope to win. The 2012 election results reflected that clearly--all the top educated states (MA, VT, MN) went blue--they always have.

It's not hard to understand why--the only middle class individuals that would vote for a party that in reality is only interested in running up debt to fund the military complex and dolling out corporate welfare are the ones who lack noodle. OTOH, deceiving morons is easy, and that's what the GOP does--it dupes the uneducated into voting GOP because those morons are bigoted, and the GOP tells them the 3 things those bigots want to hear: "Ban abortions, bomb Muslims, and bash gays and Mexicans", and once told those things, they always vote for the one who told them that.

They will not examine the actual voting records/sponsors of the individuals for whom they vote because, quite simply, they don't know how to research anything. They just keep supporting the GOP pol because he tells them the bigoted lines they want to hear.

Consequently, the GOP has worked hard for 30 years to acquire a large base of these loyal (bigoted) morons. And for most of those 30 years, that strategy--racist/homophobic pandering--worked. It's just that in the last 8 years, that rhetoric--which appeals to its moronic base--has become a liability, because the larger number of non-White and openly homosexual individuals in the US are repulsed by it.

So now the GOP is caught in an electoral trap. It can't do what Jindal is suggesting and talk smart, because if it did, its words would just escape the minds of its majority base (who don't understand anything more complicated than "fags must die" and "obama is a commie/muslum") and at the same have zero effect on intelligent voters, since the intelligent voters already know the GOP is full of !@#$ and would instantly recognize its message as being inconsistent w/its past record and PAC donor base.

You really think conservatives are racist? :lamo

To be fair, the GOP has recently started to allow dark-skinned individuals become pols as long as they keep up the racist rhetoric.

Though I'm sure Jindal, Cain, etc. have to work extra-hard at the Latino/immigrant bashing because of their skin color.

Not me. Im a libertarian. I dont care about winning. I care about truth.

Whats the alternative for voters?

Bobby Jindal cares about winning. Whatever you are, IF the Republican Party cares about winning (which I assure you they do), saying things like "legitimate rape" doesn't help.

Ive agreed with you! I simply think compromising principles is worse than losing. If american citizens are no longer interested in truth, and want their politicians to pander to them, then I think its time to form a new society composed of people who respect the truth. Not to stop saying the uncomfortable truth.

And who empowered Obama to speak for the American People. Not me, I never voted for him. Now tell me who was Obama talking to when he said "you did not build that" that's right the American people. And guess what I have the same right as that bastard. But I will alter my comment, it was those Americans that paid taxes that built that. Now why don't you try and tell me who built that? Obama said you did not build that so who did? Give it your best shot

Here's a clue for you. We have elections in this country. The guy who gets elected President speaks and acts on behalf of the American people. And frankly, nobody gives a damn whether you like it or not.

Yep. I'm hoping that Republicans stick hard to those principles they were talking about during this election. Forever, if possible.

You mean he speaks and acts for HALF of the american people. I have seen little evidence that Obama (or Bush or any pres) acts in such a way as to represent everyones conflicting ideologies.
