According to the petition, Trump’s crimes against good taste are legion. Among other things, he has:
– Long engaged in sexist behavior. Trump has a long record of personally attacking women he disagrees [with] by calling them “unattractive,” ugly or fat. He once sent a target a personal note telling her that she has the “face of a dog.”
– Hypocritically complained about jobs being shipped overseas to China, despite the fact that almost his entire clothing line sold at Macy’s is made in China and other Asian nations.
– Use his public platform to deny the reality of climate change. Following Hurricane Sandy, Trump publicly declared: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”
– Perpetuated the racially charged birther conspiracy, repeatedly arguing that President Obama has been lying and was not born in the United States.

I could care less about Trump, but Im concerned by the disrespect being shown for speech by americans of all ideologies against Trump and many others. While people are of course free to boycott and protest whatever they want, that doesnt mean they should use that freedom to try and silence others. I personally disagree with tons of celebrities, and never once have I suggested that their employers or customers should dump them simply because of the personal views that they hold or opinions that they make publicly.

Yet, this is happening more and more, primarily against conservatives. And I suspect the usual suspects will soon be in here to offer their opinion of Trump and make my point.

ObamaCare married the Federal government to Corporate America officially, while the bailouts did so financially, as did exempting student loans from bankruptcy and using SWAT teams to collect. People are so going to be required to do business with corporations and the government is already their armed-force bill collector.

Thus, petitioning major corporations is akin to petitioning government.

I find the 470k pretty highly suspect. Probably a lot like buying 100's of twitter followers. I mean considering only 25,300 signed the white house secession petition.

How do so many people ban up like that and I don't even hear about it? I didn't even know he was connected to macy's. LOL

my flashlight batteries must have died.

He has one of those stupid celeb frangances. I suspect the petition is full of democrats and 90% made up, but its not the point. Is it right for people to pressure employers or customers to sever business deals over political speech? Its one thing to boycott a seafood restauraunt because they sell blood diamonds or a jewelr becuase they sell polar bear cub cake sandwhiches. And another thing to demand someone stop advertising with someone else because that someone else disagrees with their opinion.

I would never consider demanding MSNBC fire Ed Schultz, or HBO fire Bill Maher. I just dont listen to them.

Hmmm. What interests me is the question of why they care.

People are free to say whatever they want, and people who don't like what they say are free to choose to boycott them if they so desire. There's nothing in this that is against the law or the constitution. But I'll give you a non-political example. I think it was last year, that several business supporters to a TV station running a program about Muslim life in America pulled their advertising because the show did not paint all Muslims as terrorists. The big company, and the one that took the brunt of the damage in this, was Lowe's. People were upset that they could show such an intolerant attitude, so people boycotted them, signed petitions, sent emails, etc. I was one of those people. Now, Lowe's actually did nothing against the law, in fact, they were free to do as they did. But, how else were others such as myself to get the message across to them that we were not happy about their intolerant and bigoted attitude? Do I not have the right to boycott a company that I see as being intolerant and bigoted? Yes, I do have that right. And the only difference here is that some of Trump's statements and actions (let's not forget that not everything on that list is political), were politically motivated. Here's the kicker: did anyone of those people who wanted Trump fired or boycotted his company say that he did not have the right to say what he did? Not that I'm aware of. And let's not forget that conservatives are not innocent in this regard.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the federal government has been married to corporate America long before Obama.

I don't think anything will come of this. It is just a protest by alot of angry people over Trump's display of really poor taste.

Any such petition should have a counter part so a more accurate assessment can be made.

Liberals are always so angry after they've won and then find that they're still disrespected by everyone.

Primarily against conservatives?

I guess because it happened years ago we should forget what the right wing did against the Dixie Chicks.

Trump is an ego-maniac with the morals of an alley cat. And he wears the skin of some unidentified animal on his head. And oh yeah, he once debated Rosie O'Donnell and lost.

They crucified the Dixie Chicks and effectively destroyed their career because they had the nerve to criticize George Bush. But that's somehow OK.

Liberals are always so angry after they've won and then find that they're still disrespected by everyone.

and conservatives are always such bitter and disappointed losers. they're the kind of people that when they were kids and lost a game, they took their ball and went home crying to mama.

Hence primarliy, but I dont remember there being petitions to business connections to sever them, nor would I support that. Boycotting someone who said something is different from harassing anyone who associates with them, IMO. Its not a question of having a right to do something, but rather should you be excercising that right. Just like Trump is free to say whatever he wants. But that doesnt mean he should.

No. I'm saying that the right wing destroyed people because they didn't like what they said.

Ban Trump...Ban Macy's...it's America and this is a non-issue.

What these petitioners are doing is itself an exercise of free speech. Macy's is a private company, and if it decides to kick Trump to the curb, there will be no violation of Trump's freedom of speech either.

Once again, freedom of speech =/= freedom from the economic and social consequences of your speech.

I think it's a very good use of free speech. However, due to the fact that it's an online petition? It doesn't mean much. It asks for name/address. Clear your cache and vote as many times as you'd like. Only people this benefits are the services that charge to put these kinds of petitions on the internet.

Once again, the point is not about violating free speech, but civility.

If the point is only that people should exercise their freedom of speech in civil and responsible ways, these people are furthering that cause by challenging, boycotting and reprimanding one of the least civil and responsible speakers of all.

I think any incident of economic retaliation against Donald Trump -- a man who spews factual inaccuracies and offensive comments practically with every breath -- would be one of the last I would use to try and make the point you are trying to make.
