UPDATE: New Jersey utility denies turning away nonunion electric crew volunteers from

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

I'm now convinced that rats are more intelligent than human beings. At least they go elsewhere when impending doom is near. Seriously, if staying there means you're going to die, go somewhere safer, build a fire, scavenge for food. Something other than waiting for somebody else to do something.

I'm befuddled by the "small-government" people who are distraught over the government not saving everybody.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

So who handles insurance for these workers?

Who takes responsibility for property damage, etc, during the work?
Harry Guerrilla's answer is fine and most likely an accurate answer.

"We were not turned away," he said. "It's a lot more complicated than that. ... but it's not a situation where everybody jumps in truck and heads up there. You have to work through trade associations. You have mutual-aid agreements and you've got to find a system that needs you and is able to take you."

... "You don't just go up there and say, 'Hey, we're here. We're going to start putting up poles for you."

[...]

"We've been through enough of these situations," he said. "We know how these things work."

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

Those facts only the Right Wingers know. REally really scary.
There will never be enough because Faux News and the right wing media machine are convinced that it did happen, hence it must be a fact.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

How many statements from the people who were supposed to have been turned away, saying it never happened, does it take to nail the lie?

Belief is a powerful force. Ideology over facts.

You are absolutely correct. The local utility companies have their service areas mapped out and know what order things need to be repaired in. A volunteer team cannot simply drive around looking for downed power lines, etc. and fix them without the utility companies knowing what has been fixed. Repairs have to be planned out, certain areas have to be fixed first before other areas can be fixed.

Take a non-running car, for example, you run a diagnostic on it to determine where the issue is. Let's say you determine there is a part on the engine that needs to be replaced located on the side of the engine where it can't be accessed. You now have to take the engine out to get to the part. You can't just reach in and replace the part and everything's ok. It's the same with utilities. You have follow a certain order and restore things from point A to point B before you even think of getting to points D, E or F.

And since the story does have legs, you are displaying such very well.

Of course.

the story does not even have a torso from which to sprout legs.

Its just typical right wing hatred for the working person joining together in a labor union.

Interesting and how would you describe the actions of the union with respect to those 'inconvenienced' from the lack of electricty turning away non-union linemen?

So.........?

Apparently you missed all the quotes saying that they were told they needed to affiliate with a union and the Governor's statement.

They were still mislead by being told they had to affiliate with a union. A ridiculous requirement.

"Decatur Utilities sent a 6-man crew to the Northeast Wednesday, October 31, bound for Seaside Heights, N.J., to assist with power restoration. Communication with Seaside Heights was poor due to lack of cell phone service in the area. Upon arriving at a staging area in Virginia, crews were held in place pending clarification of documents received from IBEW that implied a requirement of our employees to agree to union affiliation while working in the New York and New Jersey areas. It was and remains our understanding that agreeing to those requirements was a condition of being allowed to work in those areas. As we waited for clarification, we became aware that Seaside Heights had received the assistance they needed from other sources. To be clear, at no time were our crews 'turned away' from the utility in Seaside Heights.

"In connection with state and regional public power associations, Decatur Utilities attempted to contact other areas that needed assistance. However, based on the uncertainty of union requirements that we could not agree to and the uncertainty of whether a resolution could be reached, we ultimately made the decision to return them to Decatur after being stalled in the Virginia area most of the day on Thursday."

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

I listened to Gov. Christie. He clearly says this is NOT a union problem and was somebody getting BAD INFORMATION. Nobody was turned away from New Jersey and the crew from Alabama is more than welcome there.

This is much ado about nothing as Shakespeare once said. Unless of course you are an anti-labor union right wing zealot who is playing terrier dog and not letting go of the pants cuff.

I never cease to be amazed at how much vitriol and anti-working man hate there is on the right for labor unions. I really should no longer be as I have see far to much of it over and over and over again. But its like watching a carnival geek do some disgusting vomit inducing trick and you know he does it eight times a day seven days a week. You just cannot get used to it.

I guess I'm missing how/where this 'right wing hate' you espouse was entered into the original story. Please clarify...thx

or is this another one of those 'rubber hammer' things you like so much...'unions'+'right wing'=HATE...

It is actions like this that promotes this:

Or maybe you condone breaking the law?...

:doh

And, as quoted, that bad information lead to their leaving.

Which shouldn't have happened.

However, based on the uncertainty of union requirements that we could not agree to and the uncertainty of whether a resolution could be reached, we ultimately made the decision to return them to Decatur after being stalled in the Virginia area most of the day on Thursday.

And "much ado about nothing" is ridiculous as those on the left who were trying to defend the actions, had they actually been turned away, which isn't and wasn't justifiable as those on the left have tried to make it.
But let's all forget about the ridiculousness of the position that those on the left took and blame those on the right instead, huh? Hackery at it's finest is what that is.

And since it is now only that they had been given bad information which basically turned them away, you want to claim that there is no legs? Absurd. It shouldn't have happened and it did. That is the story.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

After considering all angles of this story an equally plausible explanation could be:

Six Alabama rednecks (I’m allowed as I R 1) went up north to help out. They were met by a couple of northerners who with their curt demeanor and assertive manner offended these ‘good ole boys’. After this, and considering deer season is open in Alabama, they huddled up and concocted their story; ‘we overheard someone claim everyone has to join a union to work’. They then called their district manager and told him ‘we are going to have to join a union to work’ which the manager said ‘we can’t do that, you boys come on home’.

In the end it is only a six man crew and not some large force. Yes, the few more folks who COULD HAVE been repaired would have been appreciative but considering the magnitude of the totality of the situation this is ‘much ado about nothing’…

In some perverse way it is reassuring to know that folks who believe as you do are willing to take away basic rights from millions upon millions of people because of trivial crap like this.

You made my day!...I'm glad I could reassure you...:lamo

ps. thanks for answering the questions...

Yet another in a Dickieboy series of irrelevant questions designed to shed no light but cause a bit of heat?

Lets see now.... do I condone people breaking the law? That is your serious question. Yup, sure do... as a certified card carrying gangster thug and all around goon who knee caps people for fun on holidays I look upon lawbreaking as a religious rite of a supreme sacred nature.;)

Sorry for the 'series of irrelevant questions' but they are not for light or heat but rather I'm still trying to understand your illusive ideology...the above response didn't help at all...as usual

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

Good grief yourself. Refer to my post above. It wouldn't take any longer. And yes, a LOT of people would be HAPPY with temporary work.

you clearly have never even known anyone who does lineman work...it is hard and dangerous, and you don't get qualified to do this kind of work in just a few weeks...
