That's a joke, right? You have to be kidding.

What in the world are you talking about? Union workers refusing help while people are in desperate need is the topic.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

Public sector unions are evil and should be abolished.

Evil? I don't think they're evil. I think they have gotten a bit out of control and greedy though. Overall, though, I support unions for the good of the workers. I think they are especially important in industries like the construction industry, but they do need to be reigned in a bit IMO.

Interesting and how would you describe the actions of the union with respect to those 'inconvenienced' from the lack of electricty turning away non-union linemen?

Of interest in the original article:

The crews were told to stand down. In fact, Moore said the crew from Trinity is already headed back home.
Nonunion Ala. crews turned away from Sandy recovery - WAFF-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Huntsville, AL

So with so many out of power there is enough help they can turn away qualified folks? REALLY? I thought you folks on the 'left' are the compassionate ones...

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

I'm going to guess there is a contract that prohibits non-union workers that could then raise economic grievance liabilities - meaning it IS the union that would not agree to a crisis-waiver. So a BIG FU! to that specific local union office is correct.

And so much for Obama "waiving red tape," as he could merely sign an emergency executive order authorizing the Labor Relations Board to grant and enforce a time-limited crisis-waiver that superceded the labor contract. Since he didn't, it IS Obama's fault.

Leave it up to you to inject politics into a situation that should be about helping the people who's lives have been devastated.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

Whats the problem ? NJ has the if not the highest but one of the highest unemployment rates in the country they SHOULD hire NJians Union or Not before out of staters.
What they should be doing is getting help to those who need it first and foremost. The fact that they would delay that help for even a couple of seconds because of "union considerations" is deplorable given the circumstances.

Does hiring unemployed utility linemen in NJ (if there are any) sound plausable? If there are none does hiring unemployed electricians, training them to be linemen (especially the safety training) sound expeditious? Do you think those who are without power are willing to wait for this?...pitiful

New Jersey UNION members have a right to work in NJ before any out of staters....

no no and no...put all the New Jerseyans out of work to work union or not then hire outside the state for any OTHER manpower you need...not too hard.

At the expense of the people whose lives are devastated?

These people came to help, not look for jobs. They are "volunteers".

I agree with this but you must recongnize those NJ UNION members have priorities RIGHT NOW. Like protecting their families...the out of staters do not have this obligation related to the storm. These out of staters were sent merely to 'get over the hump' of energizing the customers. Surely you would agree there will be PLENTY of electrical work for the NJ UNION members after the out of staters leave...right?

But these out of staters are not being paid collectively...this is common in mutual aid agreements between utility providers.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

I thought helping people was a priority for Democrats? Obama said it was. Now we have people making excuses for the union. Sick stuff.

Re: Union Thuggary at it's Finest

They can easily get in-state union guys to do the work. The workers who reside in the state should get the work IMO.
