Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tour De

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

From all I have read there is little doubt he was doping but so was everyone else so it's an unfair punishment.

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

I have always admired Lance and his book is well worth reading, this is really too bad.

I admired him when he was winning all those tours...now knowing how he won them puts a damper on all that

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

To be honest with y'all... I don't understand what the big deal with doping is. I go to the gym quite often and have never felt a need to use roids but it's crossed my mind in order to push my body a little further. With that said, I don't see a difference between using roids and a better bike or different shoes. They ALL give the athlete certain advantages or at least are marketed as such. So why aren't all athletes made to wear the same shoes or same equipment in the Olympics? If the thing we are doing is making sure no athlete has an unfair advantage that is.

I dont see how you can associate using enhancing drugs with choice of clothing...first of all if they allowed drugs you would be forcing athletes that dont want to use drugs into having to use them to be able to compete. Sports achievements should be as they always were personal achievement through hard work and talent not better living through chemicals....clothing is a personal choice...every athlete has the choice to wear whatever clothing they BELIEVE will enhance their ability...not one shoe fits all...

There was a thread about this posted already, I didnt see it till just now...so could a mod combine them or delete this

As someone who couldn't care less about sports and has almost zero knowledge of sporting trends and whatever, and I say this in the interest of full honesty and disclosure...

...why does anyone care about doping in sports, in any manner? Seriously, I don't get it. Why should I care if Armstrong used growth hormones or whatever to win a race? Why are MLB players being hauled in front of Congress? Why is any of this in any news source outside of SportsCenter?

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

Just WOW...

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency chief executive Travis Tygart says the agency will ban Lance Armstrong from cycling for life and strip him of his seven Tour de France titles for doping.

Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tour De France Titles

This is just such a shame. I don't know what evidence they have, but apparently Armstrong has stopped fighting it. I think it's fair, though. What about the guys who tried and tried to compete with him? It's not fair to them.

If they can't find doping with a blood test before the race, though, then they should just let everyone do it, in my opinion. What's the point of having drug tests if, even though you pass, they're going to nail you on down the road?

Thats a good point that I didnt grab right off...why wasnt he caught during the pre competition testing...I dont know I havent followed this close..I was shocked it really came to this...I thought he would be exonerated

I read that 10 of his former team-mates had agreed to testify against him.

Drug tests find the stuff that athletes put into their bodies up to 6months or just before they compete. Drugs that are put into an athlete years before they start competing are harder to trace. Having said that, it's still hard to find some drugs in the system but it has to be done so that athletes who don't want to use drugs can feel they have a fair chance.

Strange that they are stripping his titles off him - many former Olympic Gold medalists have confessed to drug use and the after-effects but kept their medals and winning times. Also strange (but good) that the US agency is putting in a lifetime ban - there were at least 3-4 Gold medalists at 2012 who had come back to the Olympics after 2-3 year bans.

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

It seems that the board might not have the power to strip him of all the medals as they claim. Cue fights over jurisdiction....

Well that is a good question and the answer is one that the US anti-doping agency and the International Cycling Union would rather not have. Problem is when you have a superstar like Armstrong.. the money involved with him staying the race so to say, far far far outweighs (at the time) the money involved in a clean race. The US anti-doping agency has been known, especially during the 1980s and 1990s.. well up to Balco, to let the superstars "off" and not test them that much. Marion Jones is a good example. Everyone knew something was wrong but nothing was done. In the end she was busted for lying not for doping I believe. Or Carl Lewis.. never busted, nor any of the stars of that time.. and yet..

They cant strip him of the titles.. they are idiots. It has to be the organisations that hold the races that have to strip him of the titles and medals. Now the Tour de France leadership and the international cycle union wont hesitate hehe so the Tour medals are gone. The Olympic medals .. well the IOC probably will take the medal, since they did that to Marion Jones.

As for the lift time ban.. wont hold up in court. The UK tried to do that against its own drug cheats and lost. Not that it matters for Armstrong.

The main reason I would give is that steroids are very harmful. There are a lot of side effects to taking them, not excluding the testicular cancer that Armstrong suffered through. So IMO, even if just 1 athlete is unwilling to risk his health in order to compete at the highest level of cycling, them he should have the right to compete in a clean, dope free sport.

Because it's cheating. Rules are rules. You may not give a rat's ass about sports, but many others do.

Don't they also take blockers than hide the detection of drug usage?

About the doping, the Libertarian in me feels the same. It's their body. Why should I care what they do with it?

For a few reasons...first its competitive sports where your supposed to start off equal and may the best man/woman win...secondly, this isnt just about sports its about MILLIONS of dollars...unpaid Olympians who stand out like Michael Phelps will be come a very very rich man...just like armstrong has become. Plus the notoriety....Tiger woods made hundreds of millions and most of his money outside of golf....not in purses for winning.

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

Lots of things about this case. First...the tour has been dirty for decades and everyone talked about it. Armstrong was the most visible and frequently tested athlete in the sport. Its inconceivable that he could test clean 500+ times. If he was doping then like riding, he did THAT better than anyone else as well.

People are up in arms about doping...but come on...we take vitamin supplements, legal creatine, powders, protein shakes, people have personal trainers, there is ALWAYS something being used and developed to give a person an edge. Considering the tours history, maybe the should shut it down, vacate all titles over the last 30 years, and start fresh. Maybe have all competitors sign in to a Tour village three months in advance, no personal doctors, 3x daily blood scans, and then they could remove all doubt.

I started a thread about this on sports a few weeks ago and the International GOverning Body has said they will wait and see after they get a report from the USADA. As I noted if they are going to strip him of titles they ought to strip the East Germans of those many gold medals that were PROVEN to have been doped after trials were conducted in unified Germany after the wall fell.

We agree...if your going to police the sport make sure you include EVERYONE on the good side as well as the bad side....something here nags me that there is a strong dislike for armstrong with the powers to be and they are relishing taking him down...I dont know that to be true its just a feeling that seems to come out of all this to me

Re: Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA To Ban Cyclist For Life, Strip Him Of 7 Tou

I think the key has to be evidence, like in any other trial. Hearsay doesnt get the job done, unless you are looking to find previously established goals.

Interesting that after the USADA announced its 3 panelists to 'judge' Armstrong one of the 3 was caught pleading no contest to a charge of whipping out his junk in public to a college girl in St Paul. I might have to have a cruel chuckle if I knew my 'character' was going to be assessed by people like that.
