So it appears Russia is showing their military might, and what they accomplished is quite disconcerting.

I have several initial questions after reading this story.

What exactly did Russia hope to accomplish by this and the incursions into US air space in the past couple of months?

Could the US no longer the "big dog" in military might around the world?

Should the US reduce military spending as the Obama administration proposes?

Is this a precursor to war?

A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.
The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.

“The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,” said a second U.S. official.

“It’s a very stealthy boat so it can sneak around and avoid detection and hope to get past any protective screen a boomer might have in place,” the official said, referring to the Navy nickname for strategic missile submarines.

"The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts... "

Could the belated "detection" (how do you detect where something was, afterward, but not while it's there?) be connected to the imminent loss of funding?

Maybe I'm too skeptical but I tend to think these kinds of stories are fear mongering to keep or increase funding as a previous poster stated. Moreover, Russia is standing in the way of western aggressions in the middle east so this story really helps the political dialogue. Even if the story is true Yes military funding should be cut and cut dramatically at least 40% while we're at it abolish the CIA and Homeland Security. If you want safety quit dropping bombs on other countries and meddling in their affairs that will buy you more security than a 100 battleships.

Your source has no source, goolging "Russian sub in Gulf of Mexico" only provides links to other blogs most of which cite your source or none at all.

I call bull****.

What if it turns out to be true? What if Russia decides to invade?

What if it turns out to be true? What if Russia decides to invade?

Why would Russia invade us? We have very little that Russia needs. I think our constant aggression against the world worries Russia but other than that there is very little reason for Russia to be concerned with us. We are the ones concerned about Russia. Specifically, the powers that be are sh*****g bricks about a new petro-dollar. What do you think all this western aggression in the last 10+ years has been about? Democracy and Al Qeada....

It seemed Russia was our friend until Putin regained power back in May. I for one don't trust this guy. He sees the US as a threat, which looking at things from his perspective may prove some validity.

If what is reported is true you have to give Putin credit for having steel cojones. I just hope it doesn't start a war.

I remember when they used to do this kind of thing all the time. It was sort of a cat and mouse game in the Cold War when they were testing our defenses and practicing attack runs on the United States.

Russia does not have the capability to invade the US right now. It can not controle Chechnya, a district with a population of around 1 million. It used perhaps 50% of its army's assets to take on Georgia. Russia could not invade the US right now,

The officials who are familiar with reports of the submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico said the vessel was a nuclear-powered Akula-class attack submarine, one of Russia’s quietest submarines.

A Navy spokeswoman declined to comment.

Re: Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. offi

The service due for financial cutbacks suddenly tells us that it failed to notice when it should have that a foreign submarine sailed nearby in international waters. What a coincidence.
How can you tell where a sub has been, long after it's gone? Taste? Smell?

Re: Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. offi

1) I'm sure the US submarines NEVER go secretly into places they shouldn't.

2) Did you see where a jet skier was able to walk across the runway at JFK airport and avoid all kinds of security and surveillance stuff? Not because he wanted to, he was just trying to not drown in the Hudson River. He swam towards the lights.

3) We got serious issues with "security" in this country. It shouldn't be a surprise.

4) Why is this a concern?

It looks like The government is not doing its job adequately.

This may or may not be true. The "Free Beacon" is a project of the conservative Center for American Freedom, a 501(c)(4) organization that is not required to disclose its donors. There were rumours that it was a Koch brothers setup but that is just speculation at this time.

It could also be the beginning of the propaganda campaign against the sequestration of funding that is due to roll into effect in January 2013.

If the Russian sub was not detected in the Gulf, how do we know it was there? Then there is the not so small fact that most of the Gulf of Mexico is considered international waters, as long as the sub did not come within 12 miles of the coast it was free to operate there. We used to run into Russian 'fishing' vessels all up and down the East Coast while sailing. Sail boats are sneaky devils while sailing - I once had a Polaris sub back down so I could cross his bow about 20 miles south of Block Island.

I don't believe any story where not a single U.S. Navy spokesman is actually named. How do we know any of this happened? Why is this only being reported by a right wing fringe source?

Proof?

Completely irrelevant. This isn't a legal issue, it's a technical issue. You think international waters transmit sound differently than US waters? :doh

As I said your source has no source, and all other sources of this story link back to freebeacon.

Personally I think its total bull****, there's nothing backing it.

Re: Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. offi

This is obviously a talking point central bulletin there are so many copies floating around the interwebz.

Re: Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. offi

The story isn't about whether they have a right to be there, it's about whether we can detect them or not.

Re: Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. offi

I guess President Obama is incharge of patrolling the Gulf for Submarines...

this isn't the 'gubmint' failing to detect it maynot even be the navy's fault.

I'd imagine we have run dozens of boats near them Roosians shores and slid away undetected. The problem with this story is you can't prove a negative. Just how many times have Roosian boats slid into 'The Gulf' undetected? it is like a man breaking into your house at night and watching you sleep for a bit and then slipping back out without you knowing. If he never slips up or has a bit of bad luck you will never know anything about all the other times unless he tells you.

We routinely run surveillance off china, we had a collision back in BushII's day as I recall. We routinely run surveillance off Roosian shores. We also run silent run deep off foreign shores as training, as long as we stay 12 miles out it is damn good training to practice procedures within sniffing distance of 'the enemy'.

You would have to be pretty naive to think no nukes travel within a few hundred miles of our coasts.

Or that we don't do the same thing to China and Roosia.

But I bet there are some out there who will figure out a way to connect this to Janet Napolitano! ;)

Re: Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. offi

Nothing in the story can be confirmed.

Was there a Russian sub in the Gulf? (And is this unusual?)

If so, is it true that the US was not aware of it? (And is this unusual?)
