You do not own the sidewalk where WBC is. WBC is not on private property. Freedom come with responsibilities and consequences. If you cannot accept to consequences, we lose the freedom. Reasonable restrictions may work, but this is not reasonable. 300 feet and 4 hours is not reasonable restriction when WBC did not infringe upon anyone's rights. They are not standing in your funeral plot complaining, they are off on public land doing so. And so long as they are, and so long as they refrain from infringing upon the rights of others, then they must be free to do as they like. This is a consequence of freedom, it's time to own up to it.

Yes, and your right stops at my nose. Like I said, this infringes on my right to grieve, so they are infringing. And this is where we see it differently. It is merely a burden we should not ask grieving people to bear.

And that's where we disagree. I believe by merely being a human being, I have that right. It's common human decency. Not all laws are written, and courts sometimes understand this.

Yes, but just because you think you have the right to something doesn't mean you get to lord over others exercising their rights, particularly when the right they are exercising is explicitly written and accepted. If you are in public, you cannot control what other people are saying. They have the right to assembly, to association and to protest.

You're the one looking to not stop his fist, you want to clobber these people for exercising their rights because you do not like what they are saying. Freedom has consequences and we must accept those consequences if we wish to preserve freedom.

The WBC is smart about which funerals they troll. The funerals they troll are military, wealthy or upper middle class, so people have something to lose if they assault someone. I think that's about the right of it. It's all about freedom and the consequences there of. You either have the cojones to uphold it, or your set yourself against freedom and liberty.

This is an emotional subject, I get that. But emotion cannot be allowed to cloud rational judgement.

That basically sums it up. There is no in-between on freedom of speech. You are either for it or against it. If you "limit it" in this sort of way (or any sort of way) it then fails to be "freedom of speech".

No, I don't think so. And I don't by there's no inbetween. No right is absolute. Reasonable restrictions can be found with all kinds of rights. Of those I would fight for, this is not one of them.

"Reasonable restrictions" on the freedom of speech? Then it ends to be free. It then becomes "semi-restricted free speech"....

All rights have the one natural limitation that you may not infringe upon the rights of others in the process. All "reasonable" restrictions come along this line. And yet, no right here has been violated. And so long as that is true, we cannot justly use government force to stop WBC just because we do not like what they are saying.
