Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Funera

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

And at 300 feet away, they can protest till their lungs hurt.:)

300 feet and 4 hours. It's not reasonable in the least. This law is specifically aimed at eliminating a particular protest. Government force cannot be used in this way.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

The rights of those paying respects to the dead. At what point to we say enough? If you go to a public square to hear a speaker, and find the topic offensive, you can leave. But in a setting where you have certain expectations of privacy (which you paid for) and that public speaker invades your space?
Where does it stop? Do they have a right to come to your home and do the same, as long as they stay on public property? Where do the rights of those to express themselves stop and the rights of those who don't want to hear/see it start?

That is the crux of the matter. The difficulty arises in who gets to decide what is "offensive" and when. By designating only veteran's mourners as special, or "super citizens" that command exclusive 300' buffer zones free from "undesired" speach, what of other funerals? What of other people sensitive to certain topics? Is it any less "offensive" to have a crowd of jeering morons accost you on your way to/from work because they may view your very job as "immoral"? What of shop owners that lose an entire day (or more) of sales because protesters blocked their customer's access, are they not harmed as well by the crowds that riot or protest in their fixed locations?

I think I could do that at a funeral you're attending and I'll just watch you walk away.

...if you don't mind dying a horrible slow and painful death.

Though it is interesting to see your reaction to freedom.....murder.

You are proving the WBC is right that America is evil, because you people tolerate evil.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

Agreed. As much as the Skokie example is true, however people can evade the protest.
Expectations of privacy at a Funeral Home, private home, Cemetery are different from expectations on a city street

Well as far as i know is that Westboro just sticks to the streets outside the cemetery

I won't mind watching you not do anything.

I'm not sure if you're trying to be ironic here.....

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

People protesting a funreal have every right to. As ****ed up as it sounds they have the right to use public space to protest whatever ****ed up **** they believe in. Just as neo-nazis have the right to march through a town that has a good amount of jews in it like in Skokie, Illinois.

No, I don't believe they do. These are not politiicans. They have no public position. They run for no office. They are private citizens entitled to a private funeral. Nothing about burying your loved one is open to public redicule why you try and do it. I support free speech and the right to protest. But we hurt that cause when we say people don't have the right to bury their loved ones in peace.

By the way, Nazis have to get a permit, and there are limits on what they can do as well. The police will shut them down.

You show up trolling a funeral I'm attending, I will kill you. (If it's family)

If it's a funeral about someone I really don't care about then I might just let it pass, but I'd cheer on someone that would go after you and try to block the police from stopping them.

I don't see why you should be protected from ridicule where ever you might be. Its obvious all you are really doing is putting feelings over rights. Speech is a right and there is no restrictions on it based on your hurt little feelings.

By the way, Nazis have to get a permit, and there are limits on what they can do as well. The police will shut them down.

And that is fine with you?

\These are not politiicans.
So what?

They have no public position.
Of course they do. God hats America, God hats gays, and God hates XY or Z, and we all need to repent so God can stop hating everyone.

They run for no office.

They are private citizens entitled to a private funeral.
They are. Yes.

Nothing about burying your loved one is open to public redicule why you try and do it.
I agree. But unfortunatly there are some ****ed up people who believe they should protest.

I support free speech and the right to protest. But we hurt that cause when we say people don't have the right to bury their loved ones in peace.
No we dont hurt that. We hurt the right to freedom of speech by telling people they dont have the right to protest and can only protest so far away. Its just like the "free speech zones".

By the way, Nazis have to get a permit, and there are limits on what they can do as well. The police will shut them down.
Beyond the point.

Because no right is absolute. This infringes on my right to grieve in peace. It is as simple as that.

Your "right to grieve in peace"? Sorry but who is infringing on this "right"?

WBC has for many.

Re: Honoring America's Veterans Act Signed By Obama, Restricting Westboro Military Fu

They didn't need this rule to try to silence those protesters. They came up with a whole bunch of other ones.
I wonder how WBC would like it if they were pepper sprayed directly in the eyes?

So what did your mother die of? Cancer? A stroke? Well good, the world is a better place without her. One less person not on medicare, sucking hospital money out of everyone else. Damn today is a good day.

Why do I get the feeling this is going over some people's heads, the "troll someone's funeral" people probably don't have anyone in this world they care about or cares about them.

WBC has for many.

By protesting outside their funeral on public property?
It would be one thing if they were running onto the service and yelling and screaming at the service. But what they are doing they have every right to do.

No, no you won't. You're just running your mouth, but you ain't got anything to back it up.

You do not have that right, not in public anyway and that's where WBC is protesting....public.

I paid for the funeral plot. It's mine. So, I quite disagree. If I thought this was free speech, I'd actually oppose free speech. Rights come with responsibilities, and when we show no sign of being responsible, we will lose rights. Society can't really allow any significant abuse like this for grieving people. There will be violence sooner or later if not moderated. Being as these are private citizens and not public ones, and certainly not the state, reasonable restrictions are fine by me.

He might not. But sooner or later, someone will.

No, far too close. And too much to expect grieving people to have to tolerate.

-Run you over with car.

-If I'm not armed, find something laying on the ground to beat your skull in till you stop moving.

The human body is a fragile thing.
