Dems approve draft of same-sex marriage plank for convention platform – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Democrats meeting in Minneapolis this weekend approved draft language supportive of same-sex marriage as a plank in their party's platform, two Democratic sources confirmed Monday.

The full Democratic platform committee will now consider the same-sex marriage endorsement at a meeting in Detroit, scheduled to take place in two weeks. It will then be voted on by convention delegates in Charlotte. If approved, it would mark the first time support for same-sex marriage is included in the Democrats' platform.

About time. It has been embarrassing that my party has been so slow on this. At least one of the political parties is trying to enter the 21st century.

Gay marriage headed to DNC platform

Democrats over the weekend put themselves on track to endorse a pro-
gay marriage
plank for their convention platform, but neither the party nor the Obama campaign wanted to talk about it Monday.
Six states have legalized gay marriage and three more have legalization measures on the ballot for the fall, but the gradual increase in acceptance of the issue hasn’t done anything to mitigate its political touchiness this election year. Though legalization is seen as a major boost to Democratic efforts to energize the base and stoke fundraising among an active LGBT donor community, wide swaths of voters — including in many swing states — remain opposed.

The 15-member Democratic Party platform draft committee unanimously approved the pro-gay marriage language at its meeting over the weekend in Minneapolis and sent the platform draft to the full platform committee, which meets in Detroit in two weeks.

Yes, it is about time. IMHO, marriage is utter foolishness (unless you plan to have children) but everyone has an equal right to hopelessly entangle themselves with someone they'll be sick and tired of in another 10 years.

((humor element alert))

Hhhmmm....it seems not everyone in the party shares your enthusiasm.

A group of Black pastors held a press conference Tuesday opposing President Obama’s position of same-sex marriage. The Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP) called the President’s stance “disgraceful” and has launched a marriage petition in a nation-wide campaign to rallying African Americans to withdraw support from the President. In May, President Obama announced that he supports same -sex marriage- and this year’s Democratic National Convention; gay marriage language will be included in the party platform.

Rev. William Owens, President and Founder of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, believes that President Obama takes the vote of the black community for granted and that he is putting the interests of his gay supporters ahead of the religious beliefs of his African-American backers.

Good for the black pastors. I have anecdotally observed that black folk in the south are more religiously observant and faithful than the white folks, and its spurred me to be more observant of my faith rituals. All Christians should follow their example and publicly affirm traditional marriage and oppose SSM.

Why? Do you support banning premarital sex and non-Biblical divorce? I'm a Christian, and me supporting SSM doesn't make me any less of one. If you're going to affirm "traditional marriage" at least be consistent with it versus picking and choosing what you don't like.

If you seriously think you can rectify SSM with Christianity digsbe, all I can say is "good luck". I am sure the black pastors would agree.

Just because someone may personally disapprove of something, doesn't mean they support making it illegal.

Can you think of any politically debatable topic that is agreed upon by every single person of a political party?

If they approve this, I'll be changing my registration to Republican the day after the convention.

Not sure why this should be a federal issue.

You beat me to it.

Marriage is not a federal issue. The whole gay marriage issue at the federal level is just a way to gain political points without actually addressing any of the real issues that the feds should be taking care of:

the economy
illegal immigration
Iraq and Afganistan
that pesky budget imbalance

among others.

Please do it, please. You all may not like it, but gay marriage gets defeated in blue states as well. That means it's also dems and independents voting against it. They feel strongly enough about the issue to buck party.

Stupid move before the election. This may act as a third party sapper would.

Nobody but partisans read platforms anyway.

How many topics can you think of that have the potential to splinter a party's base?

You where unaware that the democratic party does not all have one exact view? That is why we vote on the party platform....

You realize that not all christians, nor all christian sects agree with you? You do not get to decide what is the right christian belief.

So DOMA does not exist? SInce it does, aspects of SSM are very much a federal issue.

DOMA has repeatedly been struck down by the courts (at least 6 times) and will likely die when it reaches the SCOTUS since marriage is a state contract law issue, not an individual right or a federal power.

Will opposition testimony against the plank be permitted before the full platform committee votes in August? If so, who has been invited to speak?

By "have the potential" do you mean "I'm blowing this out of proportion"? Because then I would understand where you're coming from. Political parties take a stand on issues. Some agree some don't. You pick the political party that agrees with you on you're biggest issues or the most issues and vote. This isn't going to sway a significant amount of voters away, and will help to invigorate the base. It's good policy, and good politics.

Regardless, it's still good to have it on the platform, if only to help push democrats running in local elections to that side of the debate and encourage people with that view to run in local elections.

I provided a link earlier to opposition to the plank and Obama's endorsement of SSM by the Coalition of African American Pastors. Not only are they upset about the plank and Obama's evolution on homosexual marraige but also the fact that he has refused to meet with them to discuss their concerns. Obviously this issue is very important to them. It doesn't have to sway a "significant" amount of voters away. There are about a dozen states that are going to decide the election. If this issue depresses Obama's support among blacks who still poll heavily against SSM, it could definitely matter in a state like PA, which is basically conservative outside of the Philadelphia area. If Obama doesn't get the overwhelming support in Philadelphia from his black base he cannot win the state. In North Carolina this will definitely hurt him.
