Pizza parlor’s giveaway sparks heated debate

In case anybody didn't already mention this... The Spanish word for pizza is "pizza". In fact, that is also the word for pizza in Italian, German, French, Danish, and probably a boatload of other languages too. So I suspect the whiny teabagger quoted in the article will get through this one after all. No need to make special accommodations for his ignorance of other cultures.

Is Marcela Gomez, president of Hispanic Marketing Group in Nashville, a teabagger as well?

BYI, the Mandarin Chinese word is also close to 'pizza' -- about as close to is as you can with the language's phonetic structure which is rather rigid...

Probably. She was a board member of the Republican National Hispanic Association of Tennessee and she apparently believes that a silly little thing to get people to google "pizza" in other languages and realize that it's the same word is discrimination against the intentionally ignorant. Being pro-ignorance is pretty much exclusively a teabagger thing.

Indeed. "Teabagger" is a specific term for (amongst other things) a supporter of the Tea Party. There are many people who disagree with me on all manner of topics, but do not support the Tea Party.

I must admit hearing Pizza Patron described as a "Fusion restaurant" caused mild chuckling.

I can see you have never had any pizza from there though you live here too. It's pretty bad. Greasy, all extremely low quality ingredients. Cici's has em beat square. Really.

I couldn't care less how they market. The are OBVIOUSLY pandering to the immigrant Hispanic market. And this is not the first time they have done something deemed controversial by the more xenophobic right wing.

On the flip side - it's fantastic advertising and marketing.

It is their money and their ploy. Honestly it would be great if this nation was bi-lingual simply for education sake. But people should be able to speak English...as it IS our nation's official language and primary mode of communication. Could you imagine the nightmare it would be if it were not a requirement? Don't worry about correctly filling out those tax forms etc. We shouldn't encourage people to be non-engish speakers in our nation and we should make it easier for them to learn English. But we should also make it easier for us to communicate to others as well.

We don't have an official language. We DO have an "official language" though and you know what it is. What is all of our legal documentation primarily written in? Our Constitution? Our laws? Come on man. You know EXACTLY what I meant. You just want to twist the meaning for arguments sake.
 
Would people defending the pizza parlor's actions be alright if another parlor did the same thing, except this time saying you need to order in English?

I find it difficult to understand how people can scream Freedom of Speech and then when someone (a business) uses their freedom these same people will scream foul!....how difficult is it to say Pizza Por Favor if oyu really want a free pizza?....I think those screaming the loudest would never get a pizza from this place no matter what, even a free pizza!......but these same poeple would likely camp out all night to be 1st in line at a department store on Black Friday to get an item being sold to the 1st 100 people and screw all the other 100's of people who want the item too.

Wow I cant believe this is an issue for people...and to the point they play the victim role and believe it's "punishing" people who cant speak Spanish. lol! They're always free to order pizza from another establishment if they dont like it.

It needs to be fair.

If a business can do this with the Spanish language, then a business can do the same with the English language.

Having to order your food in English is already expected in 99% of the businesses around here......so why shouldn't a business expect their patron's to use Spanish if they want?...in fact this business didn't say your couldn't order in English....in all honesty the only reason this became an issue is because it was asking people to speak three spanish words for a "free" pizza....freedom of speech....if you prefer to pay then order in English!

This is about the "special."

Would you be alright with the concept of a business using a special that required the use of the English language? Or, to add to it, such a business within a sub-culture like the Mexican/American border?

I don't see it as being wrong in any way. Any business should have the right to refuse service to anyone they want, for any reason.

Yeah, I know, which is why my native state (NH) has many road signs posted in two languages (English and French) and many documents from when I was a kid were presented in French upon request...

If it required it for the "special" item yes, I would be ok with that. Hell, there are specials like this all the time whether it be language, dress, or what not.

Why are you in a bunch over this?
