Über Rich Renouncing U.S Citizenship as IRS Cracks Down on Tax Evaders [W:209]

I remember reading articles about that and I know some expats living aboard. It seems like expats from other countries believe America treats theirs unfairly. Most other countries do not make their citizens pay taxes if they live aboard. As some expats will explain, they review it as taxation without representation. I can understand why it would be frustrating.
I can understand taxing expats who earned their income while working in the US, but not those who live and earn their money abroad unless they're working for a US company. But yeah, I can see how it could be frustrating too. What price to pay to live in paradise?

Most of the US ex pats I've met have been on forums. lol

it's very expensive to renounce your citizenship...Uncle Sam makes sure you are punished for leaving the US... and somehow, liberals enjoy the thought of punishing people for leaving this society and striking out in a new one.. 'cuz liberals are all about freedom and self determination and stuff.

Libertarians sound like neo-monarchists, always licking the boots of the super-rich.

Is that so? I bet I can beat it.

Patriotism is only a way to quilt people in doing what you want them to do. People that use it try to put a connection in people to a country that doesn't even exist. It is trying to quilt people in thinking they should be responsible for everyone or help the country as a whole.

Did I beat it?

Quilting people is a totally disgusting concept. It reminds me of reading about lampshades found in the German concentration camps at the end of WW2 made from human skin.

Btw hay, what exactly am I supposed to do anyway?

You say you want me to leave but then if I do you yell and scream and call me names for leaving. The only possible thing you could really want is for me to sit down and shut up so you can use me without listening to my protest. Anything else doesn't make any sense if your words are to believed.

Though I'm guessing I'm just creating monsters again..

Your "protest"? And that would be what exactly? Engaging in political missionary work doing the equivalent of going door to door distributing your sad little pamphlets promoting libertarianism on the internet?

Go for it. That is a strategy that you should pursue. I would not change a thing.

If people of that persuasion do leave they will be out of sight and out of mind. I would not give it a second of thought and consider the nation much richer for the benefit of addition by subtraction.

you sure are whining a lot. you ever bill 60 hours in a week? hard work is more than just mindless toil. the more pressure on you, the more complex the task the harder it is. That is why people who work with their brains generally are paid far higher than those who don't have responsibilities or have to make decisions

I can see you really are a hard worker.

Sixty hours a week! How do you survive? If you actually were a worker, you would see the humor and ignorance in your posting. Let me ask you, during that tough, sixty-hour week, how much of that time is spent sitting on your ass?

It's good that you are educated and are able to practice law (thank daddy). However, please don't insult those of us who actually work in America.

its doesn't take much prodding to get Haymarket to revert to what he really thinks about the wealthy.

I want him to start his revolution on my driveway:mrgreen:

Give us your address. I think we will be able to pull it off. :lamo

I have it on good authority that the small upper flat Turtle rents does not have a drive-way and he has to park his aging and rusting pick-up on the street. ;)

I heard about that @#$% Facebook founder who renounced his citizenship to avoid taxes. I think we should tell him, sure, he can avoid those taxes like that, but he's never allowed back into the country for any reason, no tourist visas, no business visas, nothing. Don't let him ever set foot onto American soil, and if he does, arrest him and put him in prison for illegal immigration. Make the fine for his release and deportation whatever amount of money his taxes as an American citizen would have been.

I think it all depends upon whether or not they are up-to-date on their taxes when they leave. If they've paid their taxes all along, then they ought to be able to leave on good terms and afterward be treated like any other foreign national. If, on the other hand, they owe taxes and skip out in order to avoid paying their debt, then that would be a problem.

But I find nothing intrinsically offensive about people emigrating. It's the nature of their emigration that matters. There's a big difference between a guy leaving town because he has unpaid parking tickets and a guy leaving town because he just wants to live someplace different, even if part of his reasoning is to move to a lower-tax area. I know a lot of people who have emigrated from New Jersey, for example, due to the high taxes. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they don't think that moving will relieve them of their obligation to pay any back-taxes they might owe.

I see.. so if I don't hate the rich, I must be licking their boots.

makes perfect sense.

You can be against alot of what the rich does as I am...and I dont hate them one bit...

the rich already pay an exit tax... so there is no need for a new law
expatriating in order to evade taxes already carries a punishment of banning the person from the country... no need for a new on that either.

congresscritter should know current law before they go making up redundant laws.
as it is now, when you renounce your citizenship, and are rich, you are levied a tax on all of your unrealized capital gains... they pretend you sell all of your assets and tax you on the gains ( which is why it's best to leave during a market downturn, as values on assets have fallen)
you are also susceptible to a 30% withholding tax on income.
( of course, you won't be getting all that money you put into SS back... but folks are ok with that too, as expatriates are evil criminals)

it's very expensive to renounce your citizenship...Uncle Sam makes sure you are punished for leaving the US... and somehow, liberals enjoy the thought of punishing people for leaving this society and striking out in a new one.. 'cuz liberals are all about freedom and self determination and stuff.

I have heard nothing but crickets chirping after this post.

There are two different types of countries on this issue. One makes their country a place people want to live, work and be free to enjoy the fruits of their labor. The other kind is one that treats their citizens like slaves and basically imprisons them such as Cuba and East Germany. If we start by punishing the rich for wanting to evade excessive taxes with threats of confiscating their wealth where does it end? Do we do the same with company's that want to leave and then educated that want to leave and finally working people that want to leave?

Banishment is not going to change these people. They used the "American dream" to get where they are, and now they want to discard this country like a used piece of toilet paper. Twenty years of hard labor in a penal camp should teach them the proper amount of respect for working people and the lower and middle class citizens of this country.

Totally disagree.

This guy used the current system to gain wealth, and is now using the current system to keep his wealth. This is the American Dream.

Make the tax system fair. Simplify the tax system; everyone pays their fair share. No one is exempt.

Whats even worse, its a prefect demonstration on how easily people can be manipulated through lazy and downright disingenuous journalism and slimy career politicians that intentionally distort the facts to support their agenda.

exactly how I feel when I see somebody using a column from the lewrockwell site. ;)

But there seems to be an increasing number of cheap SOB's that think they can take it with them. I hope they choke.

Such anger. I hope you enjoy all that anger. All these ****ing assholes just taking their money with them. How dare they! Oh how dare they not give me their money! Those ****ing pricks! I hope they die in fire!

I wonder who is the SOB here? You or them? Hmm...

You don't care? No, you care perfectly fine or you wouldn't have threatened to lock them out. You support punishing them for merely practicing their rights. We both know you support how it is right now and find nothing at all wrong with it and we both know you can't actually defend it either.

I see.. so if I don't hate the rich, I must be licking their boots.

makes perfect sense.

No, I didn't say you just "don't hate the rich," you prostrate yourself and lick their boots. Big difference between indifference and I-forgot-that-word.

sorry if you are offended that I won't join your group in hating people over nothing more than their financial success.

I do, however, hope that one day you will be financially successful as well.

Oh, look at that. Another nominal v effective tax rates fail :)

You're right on the point, but remain wrong on the issue. The effective rate drop is equally impressive; falling more than 20% (from 37% to 29.5%) on the highest 1% over the past 30 years.

Historical Effective Federal Tax Rates for All Households

Again, this eco group has no reason to whine. The IRS should be cracking down on tax evaders. Its their job.

In threatening to denounce their citizenship and leave they show themselves to be woefully unpatroitic almost to a treasonous level. Seems to me this is a group (those that would actually denounce America and leave) are unwanted Americans that should be deported.
