New York Police Stop Every Young Black Man in the City…For Safety

Article's misleading. There are approximately 2.04 million blacks living in NYC. If the general population gender split holds with the standard, approximately 50.5% of those are black men. That means there are 1.03 million black men living in NYC, give or take a few.

Now, let's take into account crime statistics. In DFW, where I live, there are very specific areas of the city that tend to have a higher crime rate than others. Some areas are even prone to specific types of crime in comparison to others. It is pretty easy, based on arrest and conviction statistics for any given area, to determine what to focus on in which areas.

Perhaps AreaX is prone to significant drug sales. Perhaps AreaY is prone to significant gun violence. You would then patrol and investigate suspicious activities in those areas that would signify involvement in those specific crimes. It would make little sense to monitor AreaA, which has a low incidence of gun violence, if AreaY has a significantly higher incidence.

Then, of course, we can delve into targetting races. It is still common in this era (sadly) for races to "group" together in some areas. It may coinside that AreaY is majority black, and also the most significantly active area for gun violence. Using my area again as an example, we used to have a spot that was known for a multitude of meth labs. The large majority of residents in that area were white. If white arrests for meth production exceeded black arrests in that area it would not be surprising given the population disbursement. We had another area that was known for dog fighting and significant animal cruelty, with a population that was primarily hispanic. If hispanic arrests for dog fighting and animal cruelty exceeded white arrests in that area it would not be surprising given the population disbursement.

Just my $0.02.

pot arrests are a worthless waste of tax dollars.

Not to mention the fact that the "crime" being committed by the arrestees is public display of the pot (because possession of small amounts isn't arrestable in NYC) and it's only being displayed because the cop told them to take it out.

A federal judge just approved class action status so there will be a class action suit against the city for stop-and-frisk coming very shortly.

You have to arrest someone and haul them in before you get to see what is in their pockets. That is a protected right.

I am so pleased the 'conservatives' will call out 'bogus' headlines, even if in so bias a manner...

What does surprise me is the outcry over the number game and not the 'stop and frisk' policy.

I would have bet a shiny nickle the 'conservatives' and libertarians would raise such a howl you'd think it was a Rachel Maddow thread.

Probably if this was done to suits in the Financial District or the McMansion zones in Texas towns the cry would be deafening. Fox would be all outraged and blame Obama! The NRA would be shrill with their attacks on the 2ndA and push for more money to fight for NYC's right to bear. (Please mark the prepared card and mail in with your check)

But most the guys arrested wont vote for Willard on a drunken bet, nor send money to the NRA so it doesn't raise too many hackles. It does raise the calculators to double check the numbers...

Unless the cops are searching for guns and then it's well...different.

Michael Bloomberg is the Left's Joe Arpaio. He is as likely to disregard the constitution to create an image of law and order or as he calls it "keeping crime off the street." The stop and frisk searches might be based more upon targeted enforcement in high crime areas rather than overt racial bias, but does nothing to make them any less morally repugnant or unconstitutional. The cops are searching people with no probable cause besides being in the wrong neighborhood. The "public display" arrests are nothing but entrapment, because the cops make people remove the pot from their persons. This kind of abuse has been fueled by incentives from Bloomberg's government, but as long as it's "for the children," Bloomberg will try to do whatever he wants, no matter how paternalistic or stupid.
