Teacher Claims She Was Fired From Catholic School For In Vitro Fertilization

Ignorance of the law is no excuse, yes?

If I was going to work for a privatge Catholic school, even I would know their basic tenets. It's not like the church hasn't been around for hundreds of years.

The catholic church changes their rules like the shuffle priests. And this isn't a "law". It's an arbitrary rule.

So you agree that it is a rule. Good that we've got that out of the way.

Now my next question is this. If you break the rules where you work, do you get away with it, or are you admonished for it? If you continually break the rules, are you terminated?

I don't know why this is so hard to grasp. She broke the rules repeatedly in her place of employment. Her contract is not renewed. The end.

Leave all the emotion out of it, people. Stop blabbering about how much you hate the Catholic Church. Stop blabbering about "oh poor thing just wants a baby." Take all the emotion out of it and look at it like it really is - a woman is continually breaking the rules at work, and as a result, doesn't get her contract renewed.

Really? She had her rights violated, she was terminated from her position, her professional reputation has been damaged, she was damned by the diocese. Monetary compensation would help.

Really? What rights were violated? Check her ethics clause and get back to me.

The diocese said that teachers, even those such as Herx who aren't Catholic, are required by their contracts to abide by Catholic tenets and "serve as moral exemplars."

How ironic? You can molest children and remain a Catholic and keep getting paid too.

Too bad for her that she had the gall to want to have children instead of raping some

A Catholic hating Catholic. The irony is thick.

You can't say that with a straight face.

I was raised Catholic, attended Catholic school and have two test tube babies.

I didn't know of it.

Sleeping during Mass?

I think it stinks that she was fired because she underwent IVF. I also think that private employers can hire and fire at will, unless there's a specific breach of contract involved. I still feel bad for her.

Read you're last 3 posts on the Catholic Church. I guess you've moved on to another religious belief or dropped out of religion all together, yes? Hey, everyone is free to choose to join up or not join up. I personally don't care what folks believe.

As to the "shuffle priests" thing, I'm with you on that one, they needed to be prosecuted and IMO never let out of jail. You don't hurt kids.

NO, but he has no trouble in invoking the name of God as justification for doing so. And the Catholic church has 2000 years of experience doing it.

Correct me if Im wrong but werent the Romans killing the hell out of Christians for a very long time? Was it for religious reasons? No? Okay.

How about the Civil War?
Revolutionary?
WW1?
WW2?
Spanish American?
War of the Roses?
War of 1812?
Communist Revolutions in China and Russia?
Vietnamese conflict?
Korean?

Going for the religious angle is specious at best. Aside from the Muslim brand of radicalism, religion has not been a motivating factor in war for quite a while.

I figured out the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church at age 13. I'm still recovering.

The problem with your argument is that the rule may well be against the law as it relates to her "disability"

And if she beats the hypocritical asses in court, I'll dance a jig. I realize as a closet right winger you can't get your hands around the concept of religious hypocrisy.

I'm not a Catholic. I said I was raised Catholic. And I never said I hated Catholics. I have said that I hate the Catholic Church. Did you attend the same reading classes as the Rev? Another conservative that can't read. Oh the delicious irony.

Oh here we have another undisclosed conservative. What's with you guys? Embarrassed to admit it? Hard to blame you.

For the record, i stopped going to church when I was 13.

If she knew they would dismiss her from her job for this infraction, then she is dumber than we've all thought.

I don't find the "poor lady was fired because she broke the rules", that you seem to have bought into, as compelling either.

It pays to do a little research, if you're taking a job with a religious organization. You might find out you can't stand any of their beliefs or rules.

You seem to think the word "rules" gives the Catholic Church magical protection from the Law. If the "rule" violates the Law, she shouldn't have to follow the "rule", and they can't enforce it. The question at hand is whether the "rule" itself is discriminatory and whether the exclusion provided for religious institutions apply to these employees.

The current supreme court might not deem this action to be unlawful, but I hope the case get a lot of public attention, it will expose the Catholic Church for its numerous stupid policies.

If you don't wish to risk being fired for doing something the Catholic Church frowns on, don't choose to employ yourself with the Catholic Church.

I have no sympathy. I live in a "right to work" state and last year almost got fired for missing 4 days due to an emergency appendectomy surgery without which I would have died.

So you are against anti-discrimination law for gender, religion, disability etc?

Me?? A closet right-winger? That's almost as funny as you saying you don't hate the Catholic Church!!

This isn't a disability because it isn't keeping her from doing her job. Sheesh, people. The only thing keeping her from doing her job is the fact that she keeps taking time off to get the treatment done.

Listen up. Libbys have screamed from the roof top about "choice", IMO that applies to the job you work. Don't like an employer then "move on". The Catholic Church is a religious organization and as such the GOVERNMENT needs to keep it's nose out of their business.

If you don't want to be a Catholic or work for the Catholic Org., then use that wonderful thing you call "CHOICE" and don't. Simple

You can think I'm anything you want, but it doesn't make it so, yes?

If you don't like your current/past religion then pick another. After all there are at least 400 of them out there, so there are plenty to choose from.

Actually I do hate the Catholic Church. I never claimed otherwise. I said I don't hate Catholics. There seems to be a major reading comprehension problem around here.

I'll not pick another thank you very much. Organized religion is a joke.

The people are the church. Or... do you hate the building? That's weird.

:lamo Its obvious to everyone but yourself the hate you spew. A psychologist would make a fortune off you.

Really? You're going with that moronic response?

The only thing weird is the lack of comprehension among self proclaimed and closeted conservatives around here.

The "Church" as I refer to it, is the governing body and its archaic rules and beliefs. (never mind its criminal acts) Lots of those who are Catholic and decent people, do not follow some or many of those rules. The majority of Catholic women for example use birth control. A big no no.

Surely you can discern the difference between those who attend church and those who govern it? Oh wait, clearly you can't.

And yet you still can't quite get it? Such a difficult concept. Is it any wonder that righties can't comprehend separation of church and state?
