Rural kids, parents angry about Labor Dept. rule banning farm chores

Which basically proves your assertion and some of those in the OP wrong. You could work on family farms, 4-h and FFA where not being removed from farm certification programs and are now in fact having their role expanded. Further, this shows the government working with the people effected to find a best solution. Basically it's a big win for every body except those trying to make something out of this. So sorry.

Huh? No, under what they had, you could work on your PARENTS farm. But not on your UNCLES or other relatives farm. And where do you get the 4-H stuff?

The only thing you have right is that it is a big win. Finally someone up in government listened to the people. It's been a damn long time since that has happened. One small step....

Youre playing deaf and blind on this one redress and it isnt pretty.

Agriculture facing major changes in child labor laws | Government content from Delta Farm Press

• Strengthening of current child labor regulations prohibiting agricultural work with animals and in pesticide handling, timber operations, manure pits and storage bins.
• Prohibition of youths at country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.
•Prohibition of those under 16 years old from operating almost all power-driven equipment. A limited exemption would permit some student learners to operate certain farm implements and tractors, when equipped with proper rollover protection structures and seat belts, under specified conditions.

According to a DOL press release, it is also proposing to create “a new nonagricultural hazardous occupations order that would prevent children under 18 from being employed in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

You are acting as though you read the proposed regulations. You have not. You are offering an opinion from ignorance.

Family farm. Uncle's farm is possible though not for sure.

I got the 4-H stuff from the article you linked.

This thread is the type we have every so often here. Horror about new proposed guidelines/regulations/deruglations/whatever. As the process goes along, the problems with the new proposal are shown and changes are made or the proposal is thrown out. Those against the changes throw a fit about the corrupt government daring to propose changes. Then usually the exact same people talk about how the government backed down to popular backlash, then they complain the next time about how the government is going against the will of the people.

I am convinced you argue for the sake of arguing, and nothing more. Have a nice night.

The problem would be these are regulations. They were not passed legislation. They are a government agency deciding these rules need to be employed without a law even being passed.

The same problem is occurring with the EPA as a for instance---whats their regulatory guideline? Crucify em.

Yet the the left wants these clowns in control of healthcare?

The problem isnt the regulations, its that regulatory agencies are generating their own de facto laws in the first place. No one in an AG state is going to propose the ****ed up regs that were in this package, they know their next election would be their last in office. Farmers vote---especially family farmers.

And we just saw how terrible the system is, responding to the needs and input of those effected. Oh the horror!

it is rather startling to hear the 'logic' behind wailing over the new regs and updating the safety course.

First it applies to CHILDREN under 16, that's kids who can't even have a learner's permit. I don't think anyone here wants a kid, a child, working in some of the most dangerous parts of agribusiness. Those places listed are deadly. Sure kids working in the office of a sale barn, office at the grain elevator, answer the phone at a logging yard... but not in the alleyways of the salebarn or as a flagger. Not sorting cattle in the feedlot, not dragging chain in a logging outfit.

Next the kid can work on any family member farm. It isn't about chores or shoving sh*t in the barn. Not feeding the chickens or collecting eggs. Not running the milking machine in a dairy. For that matter hay hauling isn't prohibited.

Chores are different from working.

Some just seem determined to see overreach everywhere. But unless you farm/ranch you really don't know if a jobsite is dangerous or for that matter any kids really do that sort of work.

It's like the EPA is a classic.

Yes one instance of them doing the right thing. Would you care to list all the other times the government has listened?

Why don't ordinary child labor laws apply. Why do we need these laws?

The next dependent generation has to be created somehow. The best way to create poor people, is to prevent kids from learning a work ethic.

Another oopsy-daisy from the Obama White House. There's a shocker.

I was picturing Solis doing a presser in the Gilda Ratner voice...'never mind'....:lamo

Sounds more like learned a lesson from the ranting about death panels than a true reconsideration. I live in rural SW Oklahoma, this didn't raise an eyebrow here. Guess the interweb ranters and produce growers lobbyists did some effective politicking. It is amazing what gets done and not done in the name of the family farm. (hats off please, agriculturalists passing by)

Yeah, damn white house listening to and taking into account the opinions of those affected. How horrible!

You mean like when they erroneously discharged Shirley Sherrod?

naw, more like in an election year the ranters, not unlike the ill-informed 'we the people' folks here took a non issue and blew it up into one.

"if I want my 13 year old daughter in a pen with 36 750 pound steer calves pushing and fighting to cut out one with a broke leg, well BY GAWD no unelected OH-fishal is gonna say she can't!"

nope cant say I heard a lot of that down at the COOP...

just crap here online.

What have you heard down at your COOP?

Yeah, damn white house listening to and taking into account the opinions of those affected. How horrible!

For such an educated bunch, you'd think they would have thought about the affected BEFORE they put out an insipid policy.

They are smart, but they seem determined to consider the opponents as rational.

Their bad...

But do tell, what was the opinions down at your COOP?

Actually, yes...I have but usually not daughter. Although it usually goes like this 'no unelected OH-fishal is gonna tell me how to raise my kids'. But really around here, the 13 year old already knows it is his/her job if need be to 'get it done'. Usually it is difficult to keep them out of the pen.

Is it common around your parts to be appreciative to the government for telling them how to raise their kids, CO-OP or wherever?
