Washington (CNN) - Hours before a crucial Senate vote over the so-called "Buffett Rule," a new national poll indicates that nearly three-quarters of Americans support the measure to require people earning $1 million a year or more to pay at least 30% in taxes.

According to a CNN/ORC International survey, 72% favor the bill, which is named for billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who has argued that it's unfair that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Twenty-seven percent oppose the measure.

The bill was just blocked by a GOP filibuster of courrse, but why? Don't the Republicans listen to polls?

sure they listen to polls... but they aren't really a populist party, so their position isn't dependent on those polls ( that's why we have a populist party.. the Democrats)... and what is popular is not necessarily what is right or proper

i'm glad it didn't pass the Senate.... but I really wasn't worried about it passing ... it was inevitably DOA.

Why can't we just simply get a vote on a Brand New Tax System that is Fair Across the Board. The current system is archaic, unfair, unbalanced and my opinion, unconstitutional.

Until there is a permanent change the underlying tax code, such that fairness is at the heart of the system, then there will always be complete non-sequitur campaign red herrings such as this, that pits the "haves" against the "havenots."

It's like we always go through some kind of Hatfield and McCoy, scenario, every single election.

- War on Women
- Should Millionaires Pay More
- etc.
- etc.
- etc.

All the while, every single one of us is still getting hammered at the pump each and every week - without fail. All because of a broken U.S. Foreign Policy that has been in effect since 1953, and all because we never did anything about seeking out alternative energy solutions. Or, we end up with a reduced economic middle class every single economic downturn - without fail. All because of a broken economic domestic agenda that put profits and spoils head of economic security for all, by outsourcing American Jobs overseas and dismantling our nation's ability to produce exportable manufactured products aboard - instead of American Jobs!

Our entire economic model for the past 40+ years, was based on a mathematical impossibility that nobody gave a rats tail about, because we were all too busy enjoying the ride. Well Hello World America! That bill has now come due and payable and we've got nobody to blame but ourselves.

The old system failed! Period! At what point does the United States of America, sit its collective butt down across High School and University campuses throughout this country, and start having (DEMANDING) that our elected officials fly their butts out of Washington, D.C., to answer to the American People about what's being done and WHEN we can expect same damn results!

But, oh no. Let's talk about tweaking an already busted tax code, so that we can have just one more useless discussion amongst ourselves before the next Great Depression begins!

Geeeeepers, folks.

Our collective HOUSE IS BURNING! Can't we smell the darn smoke! Every single High School Auditorium should be filled to the rafters with people from the community, sitting down with their Congress Man, or Woman on this issue. We MUST design a brand new Economy - from the ground up. The old economic paradigm is GONE. Long Gone!

We are like a bunch of walking zombies, completely clueless about what happened to us. We just waltz around each day, like nothing ever happened! We ALL should be marching on Washington, D.C., or demanding that they get their butts out to see us in our own communities - the communities that THEY took an oath to SERVE - not SCREW!!!

Congress is PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER #1, folks. Don't allow anybody to swindle you into thinking otherwise. Congress, has been the problem in this country for D E C A D E S !!! WHEN, do We The People, get enough of being punched in the face by these fascist clowns? Heck, I don't think some of them can even spell the word fascist - I just think some of the people we send to D.C. are flat out morons. But, hey - what does that make us? We sent them there, didn't WE.

And, these Congress Men and Women keep laughing at us. I 100% guaranteed you - that these people on the left and the right, once the cameras are turned off, burst out into unbridled epic laughter behind the scenes at our rank stupidity for allowing them to continually - decade after decade - get away with bloody murder in the 1st degree on our economy. They keep screwing us and we keep right on sending them back to Washington, like it was no big deal. Later, they toss out some political bone of contention, just to keep the people looking in the wrong direction as they pick our back pocket.

These guys put Lance Burton, David Blaine and David Copperfield, to absolute shame. And, we just sit up and applaud their crap, like we are at some show in Vegas.

YEAAAAAAAH! Vegas Baby! Roll the dice on our children's economic future one more time please, cause Daddy needs a new pair of shoes. Oh, no! Snake Eyes - not again! Oh, watch out - here comes the Congressman's hand wrapping around your waistband and into your wallet one more time as he puffs the words "Reproductive Rights" past your earlobe causing you to snap your head in the other direction - YES! There is it folks, send that son of %$#^%$# back to Washington, where he belongs, and tell David Copperfield, that we don't need his lame butt anymore - cause we got a LIVE one sitting here in Congress, taking care of "business" for us.

Goodness, gracious - we ought to be soooooo tired of the same old story from the United States Do Nothing Congress.

Interesting timing ... I do support the Buffet rule.

Unknowingly by this filibuster it was a win to Obama. It sets the GOP apart from the 99.5 %. Obama is so smart I am almost suspect of some timing issues ... there are several issues ... the timing is uncanny.

On the birth control issue a few months back ... most Americans of either party agreed with Obama and it slightly boosted Santorum temporarily in the GOP primary therefore ... leading Romney to swing wildly and crazily against his earlier convictions and now declare he wants banning of Planned Parenthood. Romney looked like a man of wildly flip flopping convictions and American women were irate on Romney's newest etch a sketch.

Now this on the economy ... and right during taxes.

The majority of Americans agree with the Buffet rule ... it makes the GOP look like the party of the .5%.

Anything could happen and to early to call ... I will vote for Obama in 2012 and at this point I predict he will win in a landlside.

I do not feel so strongly as I did in former elections ... no idiot Palin or BuCheney in this election and Romney would most likely after swinging wildly about as a career politician settle firmly in the center as Obama has.

I just have far more respect for Obama and believe he is Romney's intellectual superior and I approve of his first term. He took a country in a nose dive and leveled it and I stand with him on many issues.

How many of those 7 will actually be effected by the Buffet Rule? It's easy to push tax hikes on someone else.

Bingo!

Now if the poll question had asked "Should you pay more in taxes", we probably would have had 7 out of 10 say no.

So this proposal would bring in 4.7 billion dollars a year each of the next 10 years?

Do you people realize how fast this country spends 4.7 billion dollars?

Its idiotc, moronic and populist tripe to advocate for more taxes without mandated spending cuts. All increasing taxes does is tell a bunch of crack addicts...here...more crack!

And should ANYONE be shocked that 7 in 10 approve? Hell...people ALWAYS approve of things that have no relative bearing on THEIR lives. I would love to see those figures if the increases included a tax increase on the 47% to make them actually pay A share, let alone their 'fair' share.

I dont think thats the motivation for being for the buffet rule...There has been much evidence produced lately that shows the Richest Corporations pay zero taxs the richest individuals pay less than people making a pittance compared to them and CEO pay and bonus have soared while everyone elses wages have stagnated gone down and they have lost benefits...
I think its viewed more as its about time they pay what they should have been all the time instead of whining incessantly they are paying to much.

Pretty fast. We have a huge deficit, of course it will be gone. But when you have a deficit you need to find ways to fix that.

It's pretty irrelevant. It's not an issue that will cause people to go out and vote. Yes 7 out of 10 people support it but 7 out of 10 people won't vote for Dems and Obama because Republicans blocked this.

It is interesting when a poll says more Americans don't like mandates in healthcare the 'conservatives' howl about the 'Will of the People', but not now!

Demanding cuts before returning taxes to a government sustaining level is a non-starter. The engine is starving now, demanding we battle over cuts before goosing the throttle is more a talking point than a sound position.

The two big budget items are care for the Citizen and care for the Empire.

It is easy see why the former is more popular with a lot of average Joes while the later has a limited but very powerful fan base.

The problem isn't it costs 'too much', but rather too much money is tied up away from circulation in the economy.

We're all affected by the massive funneling of money to the top. Or hadn't you noticed the massive deficit that the Bush tax cuts caused?

NY Times - How the Deficit Got This Big
Tax cut fir the rich equals the government doesn't TAKE as much from them as they used to. Now...lets talk about the 47% that pay nothing yet use the majority of social services in this country and how we make THOSE worthless scumbags start paying their 'fair share'....

nah...didnt think so...

How can 7 out of 10 support it when 9 out of 10 don't even know what it is?

How can 7 out of 10 support it when 9 out of 10 don't even know what it is?

That doesn't stop congress from voting on legislation, why should it stop people from forming an opinion?

That appears to be a testament to three things

1)most people are idiots when it comes to understanding the tax code
2) the teachers unions are a scourge
3) the deems are good at whipping up class envy

All that evidence has been debunked, too.

The Democrats are just as anti-populist as Republicans.

Gee, I thought the rich payed a majority of the taxes. It can't be both ways.

A) If the rich pay a "majority of the taxes" than raising taxes on the rich will raise a considerable mount.

B) If the rich don't pay a "majority of the taxes" than what you said could be true.

Make up your mind, which one is it? A or B?
