TRENDING: Grassley calls Obama 'stupid' on Twitter

(CNN)
- Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who has long been an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama, used scathing language in a tweet Saturday to condemn the president's remarks about the Supreme Court last week.

"Constituents askd why i am not outraged at PresO attack on supreme court independence. Bcause Am ppl r not stupid as this x prof of con law," Grassley wrote, using typical shorthand for the social networking website.

I realize it is perfectly legal. But is it in bounds or out of bounds for a sitting Senator to call a President stupid? (Cue up the response "but he's right" from the righties here)

This was equally classless IMO.

"Heads up, Sen. Grassley. I think a 6-year-old hijacked your account and is sending out foolish Tweets just to embarrass you!" Axelrod wrote.

Let's be honest, Top Cat. It happens all the time among representatives of our country.

I know you already set up the boundaries of discussion to being, "yes it is out of bounds."

I don't have a problem with it. Grassley doesn't owe any loyalty to the President.

Way out of line. Decorum among Congress seems to be declining. Hopefully the GOP grows a pair and smacks this guy back into line.

I would agree that it "happens all the time" behind closed doors or over cocktails. But I don;t get the impression that it happens "All the Time" publicly, I certainly may be mistaken here.

Calling someone stupid, as opposed to their comments I would think would be the line.

that's just me though, As I indicated, I would find the opposite true as well. That being a sitting president calling a Senator, etc, stupid.

I wonder if there will be an apology in the offing?

I'm of the opinion that if you think someone is stupid, you should have the freedom to call them stupid.

Now if you call your boss stupid to his face or something like that, then YOU are stupid and deserve to be canned. But this isn't one of those situations.

On the one hand, I agree with SB that people should be able to call people stupid and it isn't a big deal. On the other hand, I think people should have a certain amount of class when it comes to public disagreements and professional relationships. This is classless.

Welcome to the age of Twitter lol.

Grassley is in line perfectly. No one is going to say a word about what he said and he's not going to apologize for speaking the obvious. Obama is stupid. Either he's stupid or he's a liar. Probably both.

This is pretty thin gruel to be shocked-shocked over considering the last 20-30 years of politics.

Should it be out of bounds? Sure. Is it Emily Post compared to mountains of other things? Also sure.

(I mean, c'mon . . . just Google Alan Grayson.)

No way.

That was brilliant and right on the money. Called out Grassley perfectly.

somebody being called "stupid"... even a sitting president.. just doesn't stir much outrage in me.

it's an incredibly mild insult.

so calling Obama stupid is bad.. but basically calling Grassley childish is good..... mmmmmk

the argument Obama used to attack the court was, in fact, stupid.... doesn't matter who makes that argument.. a con law professor or a plumber, it's stupid.

Good for Senator Grassley. He should feel free to express himself. Far too many people feel intimidated by Obama and his minions. We need more intrepid people in government to come forward and speak the obvious truth of Obama's flagrant corruption, ineptitude, and unconstitutional power-mongering. The subversive acquiescense to oppression must stop.

This is just the typical double standard from the left. The left can insult, ridicule, and outright lie about the right, but if you do the same thing to them it's over the top, inflammatory, disrespectful, etc, etc.

Opposing a republican President is "Speaking Truth to Power. Opposing a lefty President is being an "angry, racist, bigoted, disrespectful mob".

Stupid twits.

Well, that would be a good argument, except that it has no bearing on what is really happening and is a flat out lie. The outrage is missing for one thing. Most of us liberals have just shrugged and moved on. But keep building that straw man, see if it does you any good.

Why, of course. For sure. I clearly see where you're coming from. I really do. I understand your position thoroughly. That's why I made the post. That's how I see it. I don't think I'm alone.

We'll see. I wouldn't be surprised if Grassley starts receiving death threats and calls for his resignation. A censure by the U.S Senate might soon follow.

I wish our politicians would behave like grownups.

It's too bad your position is based on what you imagine instead of reality.

I'm sure Bush got called worse. It's a sad state of thing, but it's really no big deal in this political climate. The whole tweet was childish, with so many of them having to resign over the stupid things they say on Facebook or Twitter, I don't know why they don't just leave it their PR people.

I think it was completely out of line.

In fact, so out of line, we should pass a constitutional amendment which requires public officials to use proper grammar. Problem solved.
