Democrats boycott Coke, Walmart over voter ID laws

Oh, it gets SO MUCH better as you go.

See there's just some things I've now learned to read, identify as something I don't need to know, explore, or question... and just move on. Sorta like if I happened upon a chalk board with tons of equations on it just dropped out of the sky and landed in front of me on the street somewhere. I'd just look at it for a moment nod to myself and go on my merry way.

But I dont give any money to businesses that dont help the economic growth of America.

Huh? You realize any place in America that gives an American a job, helps the economy, right?

Boycotts are legitimate forms of protest.

Yes, they are. I doubt it cases like walmart or coke, it would make a bit of difference to their bottom line.

I read somewhere coke already caved in.

That makes me want to not buy their products more than anything. Oh wait, I already don't. ;)

What I have a hard time understanding is why some are so caught up in this voter registration thing. Why all of a sudden?

First, is voter fraud a big issue? Sure it happens... just like it will happen with voter ID. But the problem is quite minuscule, no? Are you not concerned that this will lower and already low voter turnout? If it gets any lower, your country will no longer be a democracy.

Second, why is your attention pointed towards individual voter fraud rather than the voting machines, which a 14 year-old pimply-assed kid can hack into from his mom's basement? Funny that is not the top concern.

If I were to guess, I'd opine that some groups are pushing to silence other groups... most likely, those who typically for the Democrats. If the ACORN witch-hunt was not proof enough, then those who -- all of a sudden! -- are pushing for voter ID (because heck, voter fraud is RAMPANT!) should push suspicion over the edge.

Yes: why all of a sudden? I didn't hear anyone bitch each and every time any state suggested it and PASSED measures accordingly.

Now it's an issue? What changed - run out of other more meaningful things ot debate?

IMO, voter fraud does happen and it has for a long time. How much? I don't know, that is not something that is easily tracked. Fraud is always hidden. I think it may have gotten some attention since 2000 with it being such a tight election and such a small amount of votes making a huge difference. It seems like such an extremely easy thing...show a photo ID. If you can't afford one, the state should provide one for you (similar if you can't afford an attorney). Photo IDs would help reduce fraud, nothing can totally prevent it.

Yeah, voter fraud does happen. Dead people end up registered to vote, illegals end up registered to vote, yada-yada. If it's not a huge problem it's because validating voter's identity and citizenship is a big deal. I'd rather have a 40% turn-out rate of legitimate voters than bump it to an 80% turn-out rate with people who have no right to vote.

When I lived in SoCal my small district had a huge voting scandal, with hundreds, possibly thousands of illegal votes for a single candidate being caught. They only stopped checking the votes when the number of votes left to check made it mathematically impossible to have changed the result of the election. So yes, I'm kind of anal about making certain that voters are who they say they are, live where they say they live, and are citizens.

I've been personally boycotting CITGO gas stations for years now.

I think Chavez sold CITGO.

well... just did some googling and he is trying to sell it. Can't find a buyer at his price. Been up for sale since 2010.

The answer to that is 4.

Democratic officials Wednesday launched a two-pronged attack on states with new laws requiring identification before voting, the highlight being a call to boycott Coke, Walmart and others that back a leading organization pushing for voter ID laws.

Voter ID laws seem common sense to me. It creates more confidence in the election results and reduces fraudulent voting.

This push to boycott Walmart just makes me want to go there right now and buy several things. To start I could use some more ammo…9mm, 7.62 x 39mm, .308, and some shotgun shells.
Boycotts in general are just stupid.

I hope they go through with it. I dont support their reasons but walmart is the most disgusting corporation on earth and does more to destroy lives than any other group, organization or person in the history of the world. I support any efforts to boycott walmart.

Walmart offers their customers $4 prescriptions and cheaper gas, does the govt do that? Only assholes would boycott Walmart.

Boycotts in general are just stupid.

It worked for the colonialists, Gandhi, the folks in Montgomery, and many other groups. Boycotts that are ineffective gain scorn, boycotts that work generally enjoy celebration and civic lore.
