‘Pink Slime’ Maker Cuts Back Production. Is That a Good Thing?

I'm all for listing this... but I'm even more for removing it out of the food menu... it can't possibly be healthy to eat this. It's .... low grade hot dog meat... I didn't even know it was possible to make something that gross...

Oh so it's okay for puppies to eat it, why don't you like them? Hahah just kidding.

Actually it is not, it is how you eat red meat and what you eat it with. but thanks for your contribution.

On this topic, there is probably truth to the notion that bacteria are more prevalent in ground products than cuts. Apparently on cuts they tend to live on the surface, and with ground products they are mixed in. Therefore they can be cleaned off, and with ground products you have to cook a bit longer.

I prefer my burger mid-rare to rare, because I ground my own beef, and there isn't any pink slime poison in it, It's pretty safe.

how I do my job, is none if your ****ing business.

Actually as a NYC taxpayer, it kinda is. That said have you abandoned the topic all together to spend your day coming at me or what? Do you eat pink slime? do you care?

My dogs eat pretty healthy food. Actually - I feed them organic dog food. Let me tell you something, compared to what my dogs in California ate back in the 90s, these mother****ers eat like kings.

I can't believe that people actually feed this stuff to their dogs. I mean I understand if you buy low grade food for your dogs - but if I knew this stuff was in any of the food I buy - I'd ****ing throw it away immediately.

the FDA says pink slime is safe.

yes the dependent class always puts full faith in the government. Let me ask you this, have they ever gotten anything wrong?

I have NEVER gotten sick of a hamburger. Therefore, I think this is a non-issue made up by folks looking for an issue to get worked up over.

Good for you. What a great accomplishment!

Although this is a little off-topic, I am curious if anyone here knows the answer to this.

About 25 years ago, people were able to eat store-bought burgers medium rare. Then we were told that ground meat should be cooked through. What was the reason behind the change? I have an idea, but am not completely sure.

holy ****, you REALLY are incapable of responding to a post without being offensive & condescending.

So I take it by your hysterics, that you are aware the FDA has historically been wrong on occasion. Thank you for your concession.

It is cheaper to overcook your meat than it is to constantly inspect it for pathogens, that and lawyers. :prof

I see no logical nor rational reason to believe the FDA is wrong on this issue.

just because its pink, slimy, and smelled of NH4 from ONE supplier, doesn't mean the whole process is corrupt.

THEY LOBBIED THE FDA TO NOT FORCE IT'S CUSTOMERS TO LIST THE PROCESSED MEAT., THE FDA APPROVED THIS....

you think this is anything but corrupt? Oh wait.

I don't *know* the answer, but I suspect it has a lot to do with ever-increasing mindsets that fear every possible hazard regardless how remote. You just can't be too safe, ya know.

Lobbyists are part of the democratic process. They ask their representatives to support or not support certain things. They can't force the FDA or anyone else to do anything.

how many Americans have gotten sick due to ammonia poisoning from ground beef?

I've eaten the stuff, and I've seen and tasted meat with and without it. For me, there isn't too much difference, howerver, I can understand opponents wanting to have it listed.

What I don't understand is why people there are people who support NOT having it listed in products it is used in.

Yes, there are people who won't eat it if they know it's in their food. I don't see that any differently than people who eat only organic food. It is their right and I support that.

Pink Slime (or whatever it's real name is) should be listed as an ingredient in any product where it's used. I don't see the problem here in wanting to get it listed.

Completely agree. What is the possible downside to full disclosure? Anyone?

The major local regional grocery store here bowed to consumer pressure and said they would stop selling ground beef with "pink slime" in it. Just two days later they bowed to political pressure from the governor* to keep selling it, though they said they would sell both and both would be clearly labeled.

I'm very curious to see what the market says. I suspect it might actually be roughly 50/50. Ground beef without "pink slime" will cost more, but some (such as myself) will prefer that. Others either won't care or will not be able to afford the more expensive option.

*- My state has one of the processing plants.
