Hidden racism in Cuba

You may or may not be credible on Cuba, but you've spent the entire thread, thus far, attacking sawyer.

There are alot of interesting people in this forum with ideas to discuss and debate. Sometimes you just have to put up with certain other people that seem to have issues and just want to bicker, oh well, this is how you tell who's who.

I'm sorry I will call it my liar list instead, apparently calling someone a liar is ok but punk, THAT crosses a line damnit. LOL

The steel boat was bigger than most in the fishing fleet -- twice the size of Little Gidding, our 36 foot sailboat -- and much to our surprise, its friendly crew didn't offer us a sack full of lobsters. Instead, they invited us to go lobstering with them! David grabbed his snorkelling gear and we both clambered aboard.

For all you liberal socialist types that think Cuba is your Utopia I suggest you watch this. The part that is really telling is the hip hop guy that isn't allowed to sing his songs about racism in Cuba. This is what Communism is, this is where we may be heading with the left wanting to shut up people like Rush. Anything that makes the state look bad is not allowed, is this really what you want? I just happened to watch this and it was very eye opening.

I'm with you - I really don't care if they're racist down there - but I never could understand this growing 'admiration' of Cuba as if they have things all figured out - or something.

Somehow this has turned into the Cuban lobtser thread LOL. In a way though it fits my OP because when you look into this you find how opression and Communisim don't work. The state owns all lobster and all lobster boats and the lobster is virtually all exported to enrich the Cuban government so the people in Cuba are deprived of one of their best food resources.Fishermen who man these boats are paid a meager wage and are happy to give lobster to cruisers that visit their waters just to talk to them and will sometimes accept gifts or even small payment in return.

Cayo Media Luna – Half Moon Bay - Another protected anchorage but busy compared to the last two as two small fishing boats and a larger boat are already anchored in the bay. The water was murky at the anchorage but clean near the mangroves and we dinghyed out for a good explore hoping to see some lobster. We were told they live in the mangroves here. We found no lobster in the mangroves but hit the jackpot in the late afternoon when both small fishing boats came to see if we wanted to buy or trade for some fish. We told them we wanted lobster and they took off to find us some. This time we paid 10 CUC (about $10 Canadian) for 6 big lobster and 2 small ones. A month’s wage is $40 CUC here. They also wanted some Cuban rum, which we were happy to share

And this, geeez talk about slave labor, no unions in this workers paradise I guess.

PINAR DEL RIO, March 14 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Hundreds of lobster fishermen in La Coloma, Pinar del Río province, have been making do with 80 percent of their salaries; they haven ’t received the remaining 20 percent, which is

supposed to be paid in dollars, since December.

Officials in charge of the local fishing industry say they don’t have the dollars to pay

them, in spite of the fact that the lobsters are sold exclusively in the dollar market.

The government fisheries company pays the fishermen 50 dollars (1,100 pesos) per ton of lobsters delivered. From that it discounts approximately 40 percent or 20 dollars (440 pesos) for supplies, fuel and repairs on the boats. Of the net payment to the fishermen of 30 dollars (660 pesos), 80 percent is paid in pesos and 20 percent in dollars.

The OP is a joke. I watched a good part of that program (it was quite interesting) and it talks about the historical racism in Cuba, just as we talk about about the historical racism here in the US. The OP tries to present the program as if it is discussing modern-day racism in Cuba, but that is nothing but deceit.

because - of course: the more ahead on the timeline any culture moves the less racist they are, naturally.

Does it matter? I'm sure many are and many arent' - just like in present day US.

Well, I should have amended my statement by saying that there is almost definitely modern day racism in Cuba, but the manner in which the OP tries to present the program- that they are talking about modern Cuban racism when they are in fact discussing historical Cuban racism- is deceitful.

Edit: Punctuation

By "a good part of the program" I assume you didn't watch it until the end. That is where modern day racism is discussed in depth. That is also the part where a hip hop artist in Cuba is not allowed to perform songs he has written about modern day racism in Cuba because it is considered subversive to the state. Keep watching it is really interesting stuff.

The fishermen probably just wanted to see what the new visitor would give for 5 lobster, and they discovered... not so much.
