GRAHAM, WASH. - An explosion at a Washington state home has killed Josh Powell, the husband of a missing Utah woman, plus their two young sons, officials said Sunday.
The explosion occurred moments after a Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to the home for a supervised visit, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press.
Powell let the boys in the house, then blocked the social worker from entering. The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and the home exploded.
"Everything we know right now, this has become a crime scene," Franz said.
Powell was under investigation in the disappearance of his 28-year-old wife, Susan Powell, from their West Valley City, Utah, home in December 2009. He claimed he had taken the boys on a midnight excursion in freezing temperatures when she vanished.

Wow, this is so damned sad. Those poor boys had such an awful life and now this? Has to be murder suicide.

Yeah, I remember this story well. His alibi was so unbelievable that I think most thought him guilty. I guess they just didn't have the goods to charge him. How could this have been prevented? Well, on the one hand, if someone is determined to kill themselves and their kids, you're not going to stop him. On the other hand, why take a chance with little kids? Why let him have visitation at all?

Does not feel like two years have passed.

I guess the state failed on this one - she just left the kids with him . . . . obviously it was planned - he probably lit a match. (edit: a re-read. He BLOCKED the social worker from entering - she did not willingly leave them alone with him)

Sick pig - hope there's a hell. . . and it's MORE tragic because our legal system failed these boys - they let them be in his presence when he should ahve been nothing but in jail with no bond - just WHAT is wrong here where innocent people are inturned for life - and executed - but the guilty go free because they were clever enough to destroy evidence?

Or. maybe he/she/they crossed the wrong people. First hey got the wife, now they got him.

If you have followed this story at all it's pretty clear he's the killer.

Hah - he wishes that were the case.

he's a ****tard - good riddance . . . it's just so tragic he murdered his children. He couldn't have just killed himself, had to destroy them too?

"The fire burned hot and it burned fast," said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ed Troyer, who described the fire as an intentional act that came just as Josh Powell sent an email to his attorney apologizing and saying goodbye.

Three bodies, believed to be Josh Powell and his sons, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, were found in the house, although the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office will need to make positive identifications, the authorities said. All were found in the same room.

Troyer called the deaths "a double murder-suicide."

"What happened here was a deeply wrong thing," Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor told reporters near the house. "It was an act of evil. Do not call it a tragedy because that sanitizes it. This was a terrible act of murder involving two young children."

At last Wednesday's custody hearing....

"For over four months already, my interactions with my sons and many other aspects of my character have been investigated and documented by" social services, he wrote in an affidavit to the court. "I have proven myself as a fit and loving father who provides a stable home even in the face of great adversity. ... It is time for my sons to come home."

At this link, you'll see that the grandparents claimed the kids told them their mom was in the trunk of the car when they went camping. "Then mommy disappeared."

This man should have been in jail. Authorities should have known he was a danger to his children.

Their problem was they didn't have evidence to support those claims. It sucks...

They had enough evidence - they just didn't see it AS evidence.

Suspicious behavior = evidence.

Lately this is being ignored in numerous cases. But skipping off in the middle of the night to go 'camping' while your wife magically disappears is most certainly EVIDENCE of wrongdoing if it's not something you normally do.

How stupid are investigators these days?

My heart aches for these little boys and the surviving family members. I can't imagine what must have gone through their little minds in the brief moments before their death and I sincerely hope that the surviving family can find some sort of closure in the months and years that follow. I almost wish the father had lived so he could be reminded every day of his pitiful life that he's an evil, selfish, deranged bastard.

no, suspicious behavior does not equal evidence, auntie, unfortunately in this case, but fortunately in others. it's our system.

What a truly evil bastard. A tragedy for his wife and sons.

And yet there are lots of idiots who think he was innocent and he did these because the press and the police 'drove him to it"

I swear these idiots are dumber than a bag of hammers the lot of em.

Suspicious behavior = evidence.

I would hope law enforcement would need more than that to jail me. And do not assume I am defending this bastard. Not on a bet.

I know.

But in things *since* the initial tragic murder of Susan - I thought they had PLENTY of evidence against him - and they just ignored it.

The kids even talked about 'mommy being in the trunk' - totally ****ing ignored it all.

My mother is in your trunk. Someone told me so.

That's evidence, right? I mean, I'm way more credible than a child. Guess it's off to jail for you. Say, does your state have the death penalty?

I see numerous instances in which he should have been jailed over the years and denied any visitation - but the law was unbelievably slow. . . and why they sent an incapable individual to actually monitor a visitation session is beyond me. Didn't they consider he mgiht be potentially violent? Obviously they did because it was supervised. So why was the supervisor untrained for physical intervention? He could have just as easily beat them in front of her . . . geesh. . . the law just ****ing failed.

Is that so hard to admit: the law failed these children. The law was the ONLY thing capable of saving them and the law FAILED them and now they've paid the ultimate price.

Their poor aunt: the kids didn't WANT to go and see him but she FORCED them to go anyway - she has to live with that guilt for the rest of her life.

It's all coming out now...

Before he set fire to his home, Powell sent his attorney an e-mail saying simply: "I'm sorry. Goodbye."
He also sent e-mails to his pastor and others just minutes before the fire, giving instructions on how to handle his end-of-life business, according to Troyer. Powell donated toys and books to a local charity, seemingly to clean house, he said.
The spokesman added that authorities found two five-gallon cans of gas in the home, one of which appeared to have been lit right next to the bodies, which were found together in the same room.

Late Monday, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's office released the cause and manner of death on Powell and his sons. All three died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Both boys also suffered chop injuries to the neck; the younger boy had the same injury to his head. Powell's death was ruled a suicide, while his sons' deaths were determined to be homicides.

that's so damned disgusting - he must have truly hated those children to cleave them up like meat.

No one sensed how much he hated them? How ****ing deranged he was?

Everyone seems to be suffering from an inability to recognize real danger and evil these days: how is it that they were blind when we are not?

I've felt that so many times - I agree. But we can't keep falling back on the idea of a hell in order to make ourselves feel a little better about things that happen. We have to learn from our grotesque mistakes in our legal system and improve things so these same problems don't continue to happen time and again. Our law is broken and must be repaired lest more and more children continue to suffer at the hands of their already known to be ****ed up parents.
