I don't see what the fuss is about. The brains were the property of the State, and since the State controls healthcare they have the right to take what they want.

Where does the article say the brains were the property of the state? Where does it say "the state" removed the brains? Apparently this wasn't against the law at the time. Hard to believe.

Re: Brains Of 40 Dead Children Removed, Kept In Jars In UK Hospitals Read more: http

At the time, what they did with the brains appears to have been legal (based on the article, not my knowledge of English law). If that is the case, while I understand the upset felt by the parents, I don't think they have any recourse here.

I'd probably be temporarily ticked if I was told that medical professionals legally, but silently, removed my child's tissues after death....but I think I'd get over it rather quickly, especially if my child's tissues had been taken to be used to research or study the ailment/affliction that caused their death (thereby perhaps saving future children from the same fate). Not saying that was the motivation here, but it would certainly make sense....especially in the case of the poor epileptic child.

You have no issue with this? At all?

Seems rather Dr. Mengelish.

Re: Brains Of 40 Dead Children Removed, Kept In Jars In UK Hospitals Read more: http

So sense the state provides healthcare for its citizens the state owns your body?

:shock::doh
:lamo

Right........
How you claim to that ridiculous conclusion i will never understand..
Especially from reading the article...

not until i know more about it. the article was very skimpy on details, but your attempt to link this to national healthcare was ridiculous.

I don't. Kid's dead. They were given proper funeral rites, so the disposition of the corpse is no longer an issue.

Better than letting it go to waste.

Re: Brains Of 40 Dead Children Removed, Kept In Jars In UK Hospitals Read more: http

There was no consent.

What right do you have to take without consent?

Re: Brains Of 40 Dead Children Removed, Kept In Jars In UK Hospitals Read more: http

Well....not that I necessarily agree, but:

1. States fund/employ/regulate doctors and other heath care staff
2. Until recently, permission was not needed for hospital staff for to take and store organs.
3. Thus, the "state" vis-a-vi hospital staff, could take possession of portions of (if not the entire) bodies of those who had died in hospitals or who's bodies ended up at the hospitals after death.
4. Thus, the "state" had rights to or ownership over the bodies of the deceased.

Interesting.

I suppose this adds a little more weight in the argument against socialized healthcare, imho.

which has nothing to do with national healthcare, but everything to do with the rules at the time, in a different country.

Re: Brains Of 40 Dead Children Removed, Kept In Jars In UK Hospitals Read more: http

The dignity with which a society treats its dead is a reflection on how they treat the living. Not to mention that Christians, who believe in resurrection of the body, would be outraged to know that the corpses of their children were not whole when returned to their grieving parents. To some of us, human bodies are not merely tissue. Donating organs with informed choice to help others is a noble gesture and perfectly acceptable from a Catholic standpoint, but it must be voluntary. That this was allowed until 2006 without parental consent is horrifying.

Re: Brains Of 40 Dead Children Removed, Kept In Jars In UK Hospitals Read more: http

Before socialized health care, the sale of recently deceased to hospitals wasn't that rare of an occurrence. As a matter of fact, it was as profitable as stealing for some. It was also done without the consent of the deceased. I wonder if I can be dishonest like Mr V and link that to the free market.

For Christ's sake, it's a dead body. Seems like people are letting their irrational fears of internal organs and blood and gore, death, surgery and an inherent mistrust of anyone with a modicum of knowledge about something you personally are ignorant about get the best of them.

"Oh my god, Dr. Mengle and his band of socialist zombie doctors are marauding around the children's ward, removing brains from kids and transferring them into the body of Lenin to overthrow the American health care system! Something must be done about this!"

Get a grip, V...

****ing savages desecrating human remains. I hope there is a nice spot in hell saved for children brain theives. If they can steal parts from bodies without consent then they may have secret alternate motives and let people die more than needed.

"Oh this money pot is about cashed in. Let him/her die and auction off parts to ____________."

Where ever there is money. Someone will do anything to get it.

Would you agree that some dentists find "pretend" cavities just to dip into that welfare money? Because they do. There is lots of big money and politics in the medical industry.

I come from a medical family. I've been around hospitals and doctors and nurses my whole life. My mom was a nurse, my dad did his residency for the Indian Heath Service, my uncle is a GI doctor, my two cousins are surgeons and my half brother is an OR nurse. I can tell you, you are dead wrong about what goes on in hospitals. Frankly, it's disrespectful to the men and women who put in inhuman hours and work on a daily basis to make sure people are kept alive through the worst trauma for you to suggest that they let people die to make a buck.
