Doomsday clock inches world closer to destruction:How close have we come to midnight?

Re: Doomsday clock inches world closer to destruction:How close have we come to midni

I can't believe anyone still pays any attention to those guys.

Re: Doomsday clock inches world closer to destruction:How close have we come to midni

Two bombs were used in combat 66 years ago with thousands more built since; none used in combat. How do they determine whether we are close to destruction or not?

They come up with things to appear relevant, and grave, and wise. Nothing they've ever done with "the clock" has had any impact on anything, so they exist, pretty much, to impress themselves.

Hmm, sounds like they ought to be frequent posters here

Since Hostess is about to go out of business meaning no more Twinkies then who cares if the world is to end soon. It will end for me when the Twinkies production line comes to a screeching halt. Why God, oh why?!

Re: Doomsday clock inches world closer to destruction:How close have we come to midni

The clock is dumb. They did nothing with it during the Cuban Missile Crisis which is probably the closest we came to global destruction since the first atomic bomb was tested.

Add on the fact that they're now including "climate change" as a factor to move the clock.

Doomsday clock inches world closer to destruction: How close have we come to midnight? | News | guardian.co.uk

"The challenges to rid the world of nuclear weapons, harness nuclear power, and meet the nearly inexorable climate disruptions from global warming are complex and interconnected. In the face of such complex problems, it is difficult to see where the capacity lies to address these challenges.”

I saw something a while back on, I think it was, The History Channel about this doomsday clock. I thought it was interesting science fiction at best; at worst, propaganda.

So now nuclear power-weapons are interconnected with global warming? Only if Iran decides to warm up the planet a bit.

Pakistan knows that India will respond immediately to any launch of their nukes, no matter the direction of the warhead.

N. Korea knows they will be immediately obliterated if they launch a nuke.

The country soon to obtain nuclear arms with insane leaders who would rather die fighting than lose power is Iran. What do they have to lose by engaging with a nuclear weapon?

Maybe this is a political jab at the Obama administration for allowing Iran to go nuclear.

Nuclear energy is the long term solution to global warming, but allowing nuclear power to spread increases the risk of nuclear weapons proliferation. So, yeah, they're very much tied together.

That's true, although in fairness, that whole incident was only two weeks long. They usually just update the clock like every 4 years or so. It isn't meant to be an up to the second kind of thing, so it doesn't reflect short term jumps in the risk like that. But yeah, having said that, that does make it less useful.

Did you read all of my post or just this part?

Yeah, I just responded to the issue you brought up that I thought was interesting. The rest I don't buy and don't really find interesting.

The blockade was only two weeks, the escalation leading up to was nearly 6 months.

Regardless, the clock is pretty much a symbolic pile of crap.

You don't buy it? You agreed with the generalized concept and responded without reflective thought. I applied the concept after analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating the information. I then applied the concept.

You agree with the concept but don't buy it or find it interesting? That's interesting...

A decade or two ago it was a big laugh. Now the doomsday clock is a big yawn. The perpetrators of this farce know less about the future than my dog.

I don't buy that Iran is insane enough to start a nuclear war knowing that it would mean their obliteration. In fact, that idea is obviously ridiculous.

Yeah, why we do we listen to panels of scientists. ****ing liberals. Are you just being dense on purpose or do you really not understand what is going on?

You're funny thinking that it has anything to do with the future instead of:

"the measure of how capable mankind is of imploding on itself".

You mean there are still people that still believe in the climate change hoax ??

Hope not, the climate has been changing since the atmoshpere formed on this planet. Anywho, the Doomsday Clock represent how close we are to "imminent destruction." Only the AGW retards and goose-stepping activists think it will bring imminent destruction. Any rational AGW supporter would NEVER claim it's bringing on imminent destruction.

At least your dog will know when he'll/she'll die, when you'll give him/her food, and when he'll/she'll sleep. They don't

I agree. I am an ardent believer in GW, but it will take at least a few centuries for massive destruction to come. Enough time for us to reform. Yet that's another subjct

Face it, the clock is a joke. It's all rhetoric by a bunch of delusional and clueless idiots. If one really wants a genuine measure, one should fill the commitee by foreign policy wonks, not a bunch of scientists clueless about world events

Re: Doomsday clock inches world closer to destruction:How close have we come to midni

The Clock is more of a tool of the Neo-Ludditism crowd.

I think the logic behind it is that climate change will exacerbate already-existing issues that lead to conflict. (crop yield reduction -> more starvation -> more conflict -> less stability -> DOOOOOOOM)

I agree "imminent" isn't applicable, although when your clock takes several decades to move three or four minutes, "imminent" is a pretty broad term :D

This clock is like one of those limits you heard about in math class - it's always approaching midnight but it never gets there.
