WASHINGTON (AP) — When the number of U.S. troops stationed at the Mexican border is reduced next year, their duties are expected to shift from being on the border to flying above it.

About 1,200 troops now help Border Patrol agents spot illegal border crossers and human and drug smugglers. The office of Rep. Michael McCaul, a border state Republican, said Tuesday that number will be reduced. It is unclear how many troops will remain.

A federal official briefed on the new strategy said the reduced force will focus its efforts on aerial surveillance. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plan has not been announced.

Lt. Col. Robert L. Ditchey, a Defense Department spokesman, said officials are still working out details of the future of troops at the border.

Protecting our borders is originally what our soldiers were suppose to be used for you know....

nah, no need to do that. Just authorize the agents in the field to shoot on sight anyone crossing the border illegally. Bullets are much cheaper than the shells for an M1 tank.

That is not true. There original job was to protect our soveriegnty...not the same thing. They could be called to protect our borders if there was a viable military threat which there is not. There is a viable law enforcement issue on the border and in our country that should and has been until recently a matter for civil and not military authority. It continues to befuddle me how conservatives who loudly profess the support for the troops continually want to put our troops in untenable positions and in harms way at the slightest provocation. I find it to be a lazy mind's solution to whatever problem is trying to be solved.

And what is one of the ways that you protect ones soveriegnty? Answer: By protecting our borders.

What is your solution? Note: Anyone with an ounce of brain will know that amnesty of any sort will not be acceptable unless/until we get our borders secured.
 
I feel we should have most of our military stationed around our borders. This would work as a deterrent for so many things...

I would honestly rather have our soldiers at our own borders than off in another country fighting a war that we have no buisness being in.
