UC Davis Students' Eerie, Powerful Protest Against Pepper-Spray Chancellor

UC Davis' Chancellor Linda Katehi scheduled a conference yesterday to address the campus pepper spraying incident by Lt. John Pike. Students were not allowed into the conference, and Katehi waited for hours inside of the building because she perceived the protesters outside to be violent. When she finally left the building, she was greeted hundreds of students, but not in the way you'd expect.

This video gives me goosebumps, it's so powerful. For those who think that youth activists are stupid, without cause, disorganized, or should just "get a job", you need to watch this.

They should probably be pepper sprayed... you do see them all sitting there like that right? Kind of violent looking, what else could the cops do?

Apply the deadly, brutal pepper spray. Dispassionately. At point blank range. It took many, many minutes for the victims to recover from it.

Those women were very uncomfortable. Powerful statement. Silent intimidation.

Interesting, though...The only time they have one voice is when they don't have any.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone who completely misses the point to comment.

Silence can be very powerful...The one time I knew I was in trouble when I was a kid was when my mom and dad didn't say a word. I was generally a really good kid, but one time didn't end up staying at the friend's house I said I was staying at...that next morning...I knew I was toast.

Silence can say A LOT.

Pepper spray can and has been responsible for death. If one of those protesters had a heart or lung condition and died that would be unacceptable, in my opinion. But I know you're just being joking and trolling, so that's fine.

Grab a bunch of habaneros and grind them up and rub them in your eyes, nose and mouth (and get a little in your lungs if you can) and tell me how many minutes it takes you to recover. Then keep in mind that habaneros cap out at around 350,000 scoville units - while police pepper spray is around 5.3 million scoville units.

Please do this and then report back to me how quickly you get over it.

Only because they're both stupid enough to be UNARMED. Those of us who go ARMED in public would never be intimidated by those sorts of worthless sacks of trash.

it seems like the "big brother is watching you" is being reversed on big brother himself. with all the people having video cameras on them 24/7 makes it hard for officials to spin the information imo.

So shoot them instead of pepper spray them?

Pure genius on the kids part. That lady had a look on her eyes like someone slapped her in the face and all they had to do was sit there.

The words of someone who clearly missed the point! They are uncomfortable because they look like fools, Tigger! Welcome to the club!

That would have been absolutely fine by me. I was taught from a very early age that you do exactly what a LEO tells you to do, when he tells you to do it, and IF you believe there is a problem, you deal with it AFTERWARDS via complaint, suit, etc... However, the moment you fail to comply with an even minimally reasonable demand by a LEO, you deserve whatever violent response that officer chooses to impart upon you; whether it's OC/Pepper spray, a taser, a club, or a gun.

No, they were uncomfortable because they were afraid of what might happen as they walked around/through that group. They were unsure as to what the reaction might be. In my case that wouldn't be an issue, because I'd have 35 of my closest friends with me.

Oh my.

That, was POWERFUL, unexpected...and indeed sends a message.

I have goosebumps. I really do. What does one say to that?

No! They weren't! :lamo You're cracking me up. They were initially afraid of what would happen, that's why they stayed into the building. However, once they left there was only silence.

Don't come into the thread and comment when you clearly didn't watch the video. You're leading the club now.

(Hint: Tigger, if you watch the video she clearly says she is not afraid for her safety)

Something tells me she probably is lucky if she has even a handful of friends now.

Good thing our Founding Fathers didn't think that way.

And glad to know that you think we should enact our rights only the way government tells us we can.

I watched the entire video, and regardless of what she SAYS, her body language screams "FEAR" to anyone who knows what they're looking at.

You have to realize that my friends come in 9mm+P.

We gave up on allowing SOCIETY to limit how we are allowed to act, so the Government is really the only reasonable option left to control the citizenry and prevent a total decline into immorality. Unless you've got another group you think can do the job.

I don't have any on-hand.

Of course being peppered is unpleasant. If it were refreshing it would not be a deterrent. Brutal? I'm pretty sure I would prefer it to a knock on the head or a separated shoulder. And if I ever choose to defy a cop, I hope I won't piss and moan about the consequences later.

Yes, generally when I am afraid of a crowd my reaction is to walk as slow as possible, have a saddened look on my face, and look around in awe. That's a normal reaction. Let's state the facts, and then decide:

1) She stayed inside because she was afraid of the crowd reaction
2) When she got outside no one said anything, the crowd was quiet and did not move
3) She walked very slowly through the crowd
4) The question was asked, "Chancellor, do you still feel threatened by the students", and she responded, "No...[shaking head] no".

She was clearly very calm. Are we watching the same video? I don't know if it is shame, guilt, awe, or what, but she was clearly not fearful at that moment. If you see something else, please point it out in the video. And please, no one is impressed that you have a gun. I couldn't give less of a **** and it doesn't scare me either.

I see you amended your comment in a later post to say you'd have 35 of your friends with you. In that case, I might agree with you -- if they were all carryin' automatic weapons. ;)

I watched the whole thing. They were both afraid. I don't care what she said.

Given how displeased the mob was with her, and its size, anyone would be intimidated.... especially given that OWS has more than a little history of violent or criminal acts perpetrated by some members.

This is mob intimidation. Having several hundred people displeased with you enough to sit around for hours waiting for your appearance just so they can give you the silent treatment has to make you realize how easy it would be for that mob to tear you to pieces if they so chose.

Okay, so they didn't choose to be violent today, how lovely... that's no guarantor of her safety.

I know what fear body language looks like, and she was scared.
