It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists discover

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

I really don't do my makeup and hair when I drive, and neither do most of the females I know. However, my brother in law did crash his car and flip it over multiple times when he was younger, because he was brushing his hair.

yeah what a ridiculous stereotype.

You can believe what you like, it does not change the fact that numbers don't lie.

Yes a financial obligation like medical... Oh wait.

Insurance companies have statistics that are more reliable than some "study."

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

My biggest fear while driving a car is to look in my rear-view mirror and see a woman putting on her makeup.

And mine is doing the same and seein' some guy reading a newspaper. :rofl

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

If you're going to be dangerous in a car, then behind the wheel is the sensible place to do it from.

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

Meh. I've owned fast sporty cars all my life with no accidents or tickets.

Of course, having long legs and a Southern accent certainly helps in avoiding traffic citations :2razz:

And nice avatar pics.

A ridicules stereotype I see every day here in South Florida. Which makes it not so ridiculous after all.

Peer review scientific study. Sorry your argument has no real merit because in some states it is no longer true.

Hey that's my thing :2razz:

(even though I've never been pulled over.)

Okay, I'll accept this if you accept the peer reviewed studies that show you can't change your sexuality :2razz:

Besides I'm 5'11" I'm pretty sure I don't qualify for "why" women are bad drives according to the study.

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

Women drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident, according to scientists.
Researchers looked at 6.5million car crashes and found a higher than expected number of accidents between two female drivers.
They also discovered that women have a tough time negotiating crossroads, T-junctions and slip roads.

What can you say? Women's lib just got set back 50 years, lol.
Your report misrepresents their findings.

University of Michigan News Service | Women drivers involved more than men in certain kinds of crashes

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

I don't need to read the report to know what real life presents to me.

Apples and oranges. This is not even close to the same thing.

Why do you take something so silly personal?

You have got to be kidding me. If you click on the PDF it is the same damn report. :doh

Yes, he said they misrepresented the findings and then linked to the actual findings. Your story says women are more dangerous, while the original story is that women are involved in men in certain kinds of crashes.

In Hawaii, a <male> bus driver was reading the newspaper while driving a city bus. I also had a cab driver (also male) who was reading a book while driving me to work. I have honestly not seen worse drivers than Hawaii, especially those driving their city buses.

A few other things I saw/heard about in Hawaii on the road ways (all involving male drivers, just to pick on the guys) included a guy literally drinking and driving during the middle of a weekday afternoon (he had a Rolling Rock in one hand and the steering wheel in the other), a guy pulled up to my roommate at a light and yelled to my roommate that his back light was broken because it kept "blinking on and off" (the roommate was waiting to turn left), and a couple of Army guys took out a good chunk of an overhead pedestrian walkway over the H-1 one afternoon because they were driving a crane down the highway with it up too far (shut down the H-1 til later that next morning, forcing much of the island into a traffic jam that took hours to get through).

Honestly, I think distractions and proneness to distraction is completely based on individual people, not the sex of a person. I have seen just as many guys get distracted while driving as I have women. Much of it likely has to do with maturity level and lack of discipline to understand that many things should not be done while driving.

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

In other shocking news; the sky is blue. :D

The Daily Mail is just (maybe) a notch above the Enquirer.

But they did not. If you look at the overall numbers it is exactly what they say.

So I understand, but it did not misrepresent anything. I mean the title is hyperbole, but damn you guys are trying to say the numbers must somehow be wrong because you are women? PLEASE, lol.

I can't speak for today's young women (fewer kids these days), but every at-fault accident I've had involved a car full of misbehaving youngsters or a youngster barfing on the floorboard. Since women are still overwhelming the parent who provides most childcare, I have to wonder if this is the reason women have more accidents.

Bingo!!!!...Women are the most distracted while driving, they drive the children for one thing. Whats more harried than a working mother late to pick up the kids ? I believe this study and ive read others that basically say the same thing.
Dont rely on insurance company data, insurance companies charge where and who they can enhance their profits...their goal is profit not fair policey pricing.
I believe whoever said young boys were the worst was correct "Back Then" back then less girls drove and had cars than today...and lets not forget texting..we know who does the most texting.
Woment get in more accidents not because men are better drivers, because they are more distracted.. Id bet if they did an indepth study of parking lot accidents...like backing out of a spot while on the cell phone...or touching up your hair, or just HAD IT with the screaming brats in the back seat....women will RULE the ratings...not because they are bad drivers...because they are distracted...Ok I will accept severe abuse from female posters now :)

Actually, my suspicion is that, while women may be involved in more minor accidents, guys probably cause more serious and even fatal crashes.

Interesting...made me think..I dont know the answer to that but its quite plausible

Seriously? I'm EXTRA cautious and careful while my children are in the car with me  And my husband drives the kids places all the time - it's not like it's a 'woman-only' thing to do. Seems extremely tragic if you're suggestion is accurate - geesh.

But I can only speak for myself - in many ways I apparently don't represent the average female.

But things I can tell you are found to be a hazard while driving: driving in flip flops or stilettos and other shoes that inhibit foot-control.

Differences between my husband and I while driving? He's more 'cop-aware' - I swear he can see these suckers from 10 miles away. I rarely speed knowing that I won't be able to avoid a ticket since I lack the good looks :) His visual acuteness to detail has spared him many accidents. But still - he scares the crap out of me when he drives eventhough he's never had an accident because he's an aggressive driver and is always riding on people's tail.

I don't know why this crossed my mind, but women tend to live longer than men, and have their faculties in tact until older than men. This means, in theory, there are more women on the road in general than there are men.

The statistic may be true but it doesn't really matter to me. I've seen crazy drivers of all walks of life, and been hit by them. I've been in three car accidents in my life as a driver. In all three I was the victim, and in all three the people who hit me were men. One wasn't even wearing his seat belt and was lucky to not have serious injuries. But you don't see me going around trying to blame the entire male gender for making the road more dangerous.

I find the OP disingenuous.

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

I see far more males talking on a cell and driving, usually while on the job (ie... truck drivers, taxi drivers, limo drivers, etc).

Re: It's official! Women drivers ARE more dangerous behind the wheel, scientists disc

There is a certain amount of scientific basis for this. It has to do with perceptual differences in typical male and female brains.

When discussing anything about what's typical, it obviously needs to be said that individuals vary. Any individual may have any combination of brain traits and may fall, over-all, anywhere along the spectrum. But it's more common for a given sex to have these sorts of traits.

Men tend to have better depth perception than women. I forget the exact term (maybe spacial organization or something), but women tend to have better and faster object identification. Just differences in how well and how fast typical male and female brains compute these things. Having less acute depth perception can certainly make a difference on the road.

It's interesting to know this sort of thing. I'm typically female-brained in this way. I don't drive, but my male counterparts are more likely to accurately judge a given distance than I am from observation.

So, it's certainly conceivable that women may be more prone to accidents in cases where they have to judge what's going on at an intersection, changing lanes, or certain parking situations. But this may be canceled out by the increased recklessness that younger men have on the road, which is why women's insurance is generally cheaper.
