Paterno getting the boot at PennState

I can't imagine...but I don't know how he can unring the bell now.

But State College police chief Tom King said Wednesday McQueary didn't make a report to his department.

"He didn't come to State College police. The crime happened on campus and we don't have jurisdiction on campus," King said. "We've had no reports (of Sandusky sexually abusing someone) from anybody."

for everyone still crying that Paterno should have called the cops. it wouldn't have done any good if he did.

Not calling State College borough police dept but calling Penn State Univeristy police dept should have. Most large college campuses that are the size of a small city usually have their own police force.

I'm telling you it doesn't matter. if it was reported, they have to investigate.

Really? So police departments have never given little credence to a report and thus barely investigate it or out and out ignore and/or cover it up? Its an absolute they had to do a full scale investigation.

Again, I'm telling you it does matter. There's a legitimate argument to be made that if a police report was filed that could potentially bring down the institute of Penn State Football in that community and that if it was filed by some random graduate assistant that it'd get less attention and be treated less seriously then it would be if it came from Joe F'ing Paterno.

if it was reported, continuing to claim that Paterno should have double tapped it just shows that the claimant has an axe to grind against paterno

No, it doesn't.

1) Just because it was reported doesn't prove that Paterno knew it was reported

2) The weight of influence between Mike McQueary and Joe Paterno at that time would be the difference between the influence a mayor of some small town has and the President of the United States. The cops could easily not take seriously or not thoroughly investigate a claim of such from someone like McQueary, doing the ole "it was reported so we have to check it out, so did this happen? No, thanks" routine. The same is unlikely to happen when the god of Penn State football himself comes and asks you to investigate.

Your case would be at least slightly more legitimate if we even knew that Paterno knew that McQueary told the cops, but we don't even know if that's the case. And with not knowing, its not unreasonable for people to suggest that Paterno should've told the cops if he wasn't aware the ywere informed.

agreed, the guy was retired, he had no business hanging around anyway. if he still wanted to be involved, he shouldn't have retired.

I have no problem with a retired person still being involved with a program. I have problems with a retired person, whom you've been told by a grad assistant that they first hand saw him banging a boy in your lockerroom, still being involved with a program.

any evidence that Sandusky was involved with the program after the 2002 incident?

He had access to the campus and the program areas...that I do know

any evidence that Sandusky was involved with the program after the 2002 incident?

A person familiar with Sandusky's relationship with Penn State told The Associated Press that the former coach long maintained an office in the East Area Locker building which is across the street from the Penn State football team's building, and was on campus as recently as week ago working out.

The university's online directory listed Sandusky, whom Penn State officials said was banned from campus over the [weekend of the announcement of the charges] -- as an assistant professor emeritus of physical education in the Lasch building. Sandusky was Paterno's longtime defensive coordinator and one-time heir apparent

Sandusky was prohibited from holding youth sports camps on campus in 2002, but continued to hold them through 2008 under his Sandusky Associates company at the university's Behrend campus, just outside Erie.

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky had access to the team’s weight room as recently as [a week before November 8th], a person familiar with the situation said just hours before Joe Paterno was to give his first news conference since his former protege was charged with child sex abuse.

en-current Penn State players also participated in the Second Mile charity's Nittany Lion Tips program, in which trading cards with inspirational sayings were given to school children, and Paterno was listed as an honorary member of the Second Mile board of directors as recently as 2010 -- eight years after the grand-jury report said he was told about improper activity involving Sandusky, the newsletters and past versions of Second Mile's website show.

Note, as a board member of Second Mile Paterno would've had yet another chance to hear that Sandusky may've been involved with misconduct of a sexual nature in 2008

2008: Sandusky told The Second Mile that he was being investigated on allegations of sexual assault in Clinton County.

Sporting News and AP Timeline

Remained with an office on campus, with an official position with the university, using the universities other campuses as a means of doing youth camps, and using the lockerroom of the team to work out up until a week before the allegations came out. This with Paterno having two (and really possibly three counting the 1998 charge that was dropped) instances of hearing about potential sexual misconduct by Sandusky.

Joe Paterno was arguably one of, if not the, most powerful people in College Sports. To suggest its not likely that had he made even an ounce of a stink over it that Penn State wouldn't side with him is ridiculous. And even if they wouldn't go along with it, there's no indication or evidence pointing to him even asking for such or suggesting such should happen.

I don't believe this arguement. From all reports Sandusky's crimes happened all over the place. Yes they would have had to coordinate with the campus police to investigate the actions on campus BUT that would have made it very hard for the campus police to have covered up for it (if they even did) and they would have nothing to do with the rest of the investigation.

I believe this may be good in starting an arguement whether it's a good idea for a campus to have their own police force with jurisdiction over everything.

yeah, but there is no evidence that Paterno ever knew about any incidents that occurred off campus. so again, no reason for him to call "the cops"

He was able to maintain an office on campus. (which just simply amazes me, knowing what they knew). Sandusky had access to practices and scrimmages where it's being reported that he took the kids.

He just wasn't allowed to shower with them any longer.

I'm betting that when this is all over and done with we will find out that he did. He better hope he is damn well covered by insurance also because IMO this is going to cost him a ton.

he's already started liquidating his estate. by the time they get around to suing him, he won't have anything left. my guess is, at 85, he's not going to be around much longer anyway.

He may not outlive the lawsuits but what a lousy way to go especially when you consider what the alternative would have been. There will now never be a Joe Paterno day at Penn State. No big retirement tour. No NBC analysis position.

Stunningly shocking isn't it???
