As the 2012 presidential campaign heats up, President Obama’s campaign team has set up a new Web site, AttackWatch.com, to challenge negative statements about the president made by Republican presidential candidates and conservatives.
Obama for America national field director Jeremy Bird told ABC Newsthat the site’s goal is to offer “resources to fight back” against attacks. Mostly, that means fact checking statements from the likes of GOP presidential contenders Mitt Romney and Rick Perry and conservative commentator Glenn Beck and offering evidence to the contrary. The site is designed in bold red and black colors, and uses statements like “support the truth” and “fight the smears.”

It’s safe to say that in its 24 hours of existence, Attack Watch has already backfired, becoming a tool for conservatives to use against Obama 2012. A tweet by conservative author Brad Thor summed up the critics’s argument: “Wow, not only are Obama & Co. incredibly thin-skinned, they're paranoid.”

Yeah, I would rather not see Obama do that same victim mentality that people like Palin thrive on.

Bush at least took his hits with grace and a level of maturity.

Bit late for you to not want Obama to play victim. But I guess you missed all that so far.

He does it a little bit, I agree, like that spat with fox news and rush a couple years back, but it should not be a central theme of his.

He shouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. This is a VERY bad idea playing victim like this is 2007 again.... backfire is right.

Obama needs to understand that some will not like him, even if he can magically create the cutest kittens with out of a poof of butterflies that heal the terminally ill and be the person we elected him to be, not someone who tries to appeal to everyone and certainly not a victim. His purpose should be to heal the country, not please people.

Obama's a member here?

And no, it's really to identify how stupid a politician is and can continue to be.

Not the first time I heard that Obama is a member!

I'ts making headlines in various sources, and is a Presidential action that... well is getting mocked for it's ineptitude. How is that "ha ha trolling Obama"?

Let me see if I understand this correctly: The same people who are ridiculing Obama are now laughing at Obama for defending himself.

Is that about right?

I would have ridiculed Bush just the same.

There's no reason for the President of the US to go on a campaign of this nature. . honestly - it's just not very presidential. It's sending mixed messages and one of them is that he can dish it but he can't take it.

Eeeeek! The AttackWatch website design is awful. I can get behind the corrective content though, i.e., TARP was enacted by GWBush, but why start yet another website that "fact checks" when you already have Factcheck.org and PolitiFact.com? Besides, as some have already pointed out, why create a website where you basically play the victim? Granted, it's not the Obama Administration submitting the content nor directly monitoring the site, but still...

I'd take the site down...don't even think about starting over...and let the other two non-affiliated sites continue doing the fact checking, as well as, tracking his campaign promises. IMO, both do a very good job. No need to reinvent the wheel here.

He's not just the President -- he's a member!

That's about right. Doesn't make much sense does it?

Wow. How desperate Obama must be. We should all mock fact checking! Stupid people trying to correct misleading and dishonest attacks.

It does if the GOP is this guy.

Well - there are plenty of organizations and individuals outther doing exactly that. Why does he have to do it first hand? That genuinely makes me question the validity of anything he's saying.

I think it's desperate - and desperation does not a good president make.

While staying above the fray in order to look presidential looks good on paper, it doesn't always work in the real world. Just ask John Kerry.

And having the White House to create a website that refutes rumors is not the same as Obama himself getting up on camera and spending time on it. Keep in mind that that the laughter here is coming from the people who are already laughing at him. It's the very height of much ado about nothing.

I think it would also be good to keep in mind that Obama personally got up on national television and showed his birth certificate. While at the time I may have been one of the people who was disappointed in him for climbing down into the mud like that, history proved me wrong: the birther nonsense died within the week.

Tackling rumors and lies head on can be an extremely good thing.

Why can't he defend himself? It's America, free

Well in general, this is the right attitude to have for any politician, not just Obama.

I think it's desperate - and desperation does not a good president make.

I don't think it's desperation, I think he's pissed off because campaigning has gotten worse and worse and worse and now it's all finger pointing, spin, and distortion. I'd be mad as hell too.

Re: Attack Watch, new Obama campaign site to ‘fight smears,’ becomes laughing stock o

So the issue is that he had a fact checking website set up? I do not see an issue with that. Any website that provides nothing but good hard facts is a website I support.
