Human rights campaigners say Chinese factories using children as young as 14 and that workers forced to do overtime


Disney's best-selling Cars toys are being made in a factory in China that uses child labour and forces staff to do three times the amount of overtime allowed by law, according to an investigation.
One worker reportedly killed herself after being repeatedly shouted at by bosses. Others cited worries over poisonous chemicals. Disney has now launched its own investigation.

I keep saying that what we need to implement is a "human rights tax" on imported goods from countries that violate human rights. It is not right that countries and corporation should profit from practical slave labor.

Not to sound jaded, but it should be painfully obvious by now that our governments don't really care all that much about human rights when it comes to economy. The only reason why we have human rights here is because our ancestors fought tooth and nail for them, and had to bend the will of government to get it.

But now we have tea party shills and another ignorant factions who think that scrapping unions and worker rights is going to get America out of its financial predicament. I think selling the soul of what our nation is supposed to stand for will just ruin us completely and utterly.

Your right but the point is AMERICA did care about human rights...thats why they passed regulations laws and create Oasha and thats why Unions formed in this country all to stop this greedy sweat shop mentality...the corporations RAN to china to avoid the regulations in america not because they were OPPRESSIVE they were making fantastic profits...but they want mOAR and mOAR

You're preaching to the choir.

But you know... Marx was right about one thing, the social state of humans is directly tied to economic conditions. Both World Wars coupled with the industrial revolution and the advent of machines that could replace people meant that we had the luxury to discuss human rights. We used to have our own children working in coal mines and sweat shops right here, just before the Progressive Era.

Human rights are bad for business. It's why China is getting all the business, and we are seeing a direct attack on worker rights here in the U.S. right now. When prosperity declines, rights go out the window. We have always taken advantage of the low human rights in other countries. Take the Congo for example. Their government - put there at our leisure - is responsible for brutally raping and killing thousands of women every single year. But their government pays lip service to our need for rare earth metals.

China changed the game because they are the first nation to appear that has low human rights but extremely high productivity. They are basically the best of both worlds for business. They are a corporation's wet dream, so much so that we are seeing a GOP/Tea Party push for a decline of unions in our own country. That's what people aren't getting - it's business that is fuelling this battle, masked in traditional Constitutionalism.

Rights should never be a luxury but always a constantly. Problem is, we live in a democracy for the most part, and when the masses begin to turn coat against the very institutions that have fostered their freedom, we have big problems on the horizon.

The #1 problem in America right now - above everything else that is happening - is that everyone from the top down is selling their souls for money. Make no mistake, they will sell out America before they give up their addiction to profit.

Bingo....and your last paragraph is exactly whats wrong with america...what made me turn on the teaparty and the Gop...ok your greedy you want lots of profits...thats ok...but when they had the gall to blame the working class and seniors and poor for the countries problems and then waged an all out assault on workers and benefits...I had enough.

i fail to see why foreign manufacturing should be exempt from the OSHA and pollution control regulations that American manufacturing has to follow. perhaps that should be a requirement for tariff free access to the US market. tariff the hell out of sweatshop labor until it is no longer competitive. and fine US corporations for using it.

We cant dictate to a foriegn nation what laws they should have....when we find an american corporation involved in sweatshop labor even just financially ban those products from the USA till it ends.

we wouldn't be dictating anything. they could continue to run polluting sweatshops all they want. those goods, however, would be subject to high tariffs.

conversely, any product manufactured in a factory that meets US OSHA and pollution emission guidelines would be tariff free.

seems pretty fair.

What about companies that don't violate "human rights" in those countries?
Why should they also pay the tax?

We were China 60 -100 years ago. We manipulated and used currencies, labor rates, trading advantages, etc. to build and protect our own economy. Now the Chinese are copying our method, nearly exactly. Would that make us a bit hypocritical to state that what China is doing is wrong? It's not rocket science.

No, because we know what we did and we took steps to stop doing it. It wasn't like we swept this under the carpet and pretend that we never had business practices like those in China. We enacted laws to make people safer and get less abused by corporations, and openly admit that those practices in the past are why we have said laws today.

You would be hard pressed to find a company that doesn't "violate human rights" in China. The reason why China is attractive for manufacturing is:

1. Environmental rules are weak there. The regulations that exist there are largely unenforced.

2. Labor laws are almost completely unenforced there. You can get away with having child labor, 12 hour days, not compensating for overtime, and fire someone for no reason at all. Hell they can even charge you for the time it takes you to eat your lunch or go to the restroom.

3. The average salary is around 146 dollars a month (it may be a little higher now with inflation).

4. Local governments will give you whatever you want.

This just proves two things.

First, Disney is an evil company. Obviosly. :)

Second, that politicians are politicians because they want to make money for themselves at everybody elses expense.

That would be a good idea... I like it. This should be discouraged, and this story is tragic. Hopefully China will give their workers more rights soon.

For the privledge of taking our jobs then wanting us to buy those goods made in another country. Even the playing field with companies that stayed in american AND CREATE JOBS HERE....yanno Harry the republican Job Creation thingy :)

What needs to happen is in my mind is that we need to have a set of published standards that all foreign import industries must live up to or they are band from doing business in this Country.

Those standards need to mirror those American Companies must meet.

This is a way that we can raise the bar around the world.

The only exception is wages. Other Nations have different wage scales and for us to demand they meet ours would drive up the price of every import and hurt the economy as a whole. Not to mention international trade.

Thats a good suggestion councilman.
