COLUMBUS – Secretary of State Jon Husted today certified that petitioners seeking a referendum on Senate Bill 5 have collected 915,456valid signatures, meeting the necessary requirements to place the issue on the 2011 November ballot. Petitioners needed 231,147 signatures or six percent of the total vote cast for Governor in 2010.

Less than a quarter million signatures were needed to put repeal of the Ohio union busting law on that ballot. Almost a full million signatures were collected, and polls show a crushing victory for those who want repeal of this law. Chalk up a victory for the people of Ohio over corporate special interests.

This is interesting and I wonder what it means for the governor.

Re: [Ohio]- SECRETARY OF STATE HUSTED CERTIFIES SIGNATURES FOR REFERENDUM ON SENATE B

According to a Quinnipiac poll of registered voters, 50 percent of Ohio voters disapprove of the job Kasich is doing as governor. Just 35 percent approve of his job performance. Almost one third of all registered voters are "very dissatisfied" with the way things are going in the state.

When Kasich ran for governor and defeated incumbent governor Ted Strickland, he promised he would close Ohio's $8 billion budget gap without raising taxes. He and the Republican dominated legislature passed numerous spending cuts to bring the budget into balance. The cuts in state services will impact Ohioans from all walks of life.

Kasich has also examined the possibility of leasing the Ohio Turnpike to a private operator and has pushed legislation to allow oil and gas exploration on state owned property as means of increasing revenue to the cash strapped state.

However, the issue that most voters identify with John Kasich is Senate Bill 5 which he signed into law in March. S.B. 5 fundamentally alters the ability of state and local employee unions to negotiate with their employers. The bill prohibits strikes by public employees, sets minimum levels of pension contributions and contributions toward health care.

50% of voters disapprove... that sucks for him

Looks like the governor's approval ratings have taken a nose dive.

Gov. Kasich's approval rating on downhill slide : Politics : News : ToledoontheMove.com

That's the most recent article I can find... 20th of this month

Kasich was smart to do the stuff that is going to piss of people who didn't support him in 2010 early in his administration

how he does in 2014 is going to turn on issues other than that. for example he also held up the casino deal trying to get more money for ohio

that hurt him as people saw empty construction sites and heard city politicians whining about their cash cow being slowed up

in 2014 if OHio is raking in big bucks (and Ohio will get more due to Kasich forcing a better deal) he's going be able to take credit for that

I presume the million signatures were done by taxpayers. Democracy!!!

And even if the people are wrong in overturning his legislation, this government is for the people and by the people. Game on.

depends on how you define tax payers

actually its voters

and I think it will pass

the unions are having a hard on over this

most people don't care enough one way or another unless they are unionistas who think that limiting the ability of public sector unions to rape the taxpayers hurts all unionistas (sadly the unions that are most legitimate are waning and the ones that are most worthless are growing)

referendums cut both ways

Indeed they have, but the rights of a group should never be put to a vote of the people.

if you love referendums when they allow "the people" to overturn a legislative decision on union abuses then you have to also support the people throwing out a legislature legalizing gay marriage

Re: [Ohio]- SECRETARY OF STATE HUSTED CERTIFIES SIGNATURES FOR REFERENDUM ON SENATE B

Actually, part of me HOPES they pull this off, and in three years, when the state is back in the toilet financially.. no, they'll never learn. Some folks just don't get that PS Unions are seriously bad news.

Rather than corporate special interests, they now support union special interests.

So, how many jobs do unions create? Unions don't pay taxes, either; unlike corporations. Not much business savvy in Ohio, it seems.

People who pay taxes.

Re: [Ohio]- SECRETARY OF STATE HUSTED CERTIFIES SIGNATURES FOR REFERENDUM ON SENATE B

non-sequitur Unionistas in the private sector think an attack on parasitic public sector unions is an attack on them

just like legal hispanic immigrants are up in arms over attempts to crack down on illegal latino immigration

And this has what to do with what I responded to?

Interesting the state voting itself free gifts from the treasury at the expense of the taxpayer, nothing like burning the candles from both ends.

None of those people pay taxes, either.

That is irrelevant and inconsequential. You wanted to know what a taxpayer was by definition --- you were informed that it is a person who pays taxes. End of argument.

Yeah I doubt not a one of them ever bought a six pack of beer or anything else that has a tax on it for that matter.

that is as silly as saying a bank robber is truly a taxpayer if he takes money he didn't own and uses it to pay taxes. what he is doing is paying taxes with other peoples' money, they are the taxpayers not him
