Senate Blocks Voet on Cut Cap and Balance

The Senate voted today to block the House-passed “Cut, Cap and Balance” legislation from even being brought to a vote on passage. A procedural motion to “table” a “motion to proceed” on the measure passed 51 to 46 on party lines.

Reps. Tim Huelskamp (R., Kan.) and Jeff Duncan (R., S.C.) led a delegation of roughly a dozen House Republican freshman to the Senate floor to observe the proceedings during the vote.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said Thursday it would be a “waste of the Senate’s time” to debate the measure any further, adding that he thought the bill was “perhaps some of the worst legislation in the history of this country.” Reid had initially schedule the vote for Saturday, but decided to move it up at the last minute.

“Senator Reid’s scramble to vote on this bill a day earlier than previously announced shows that Cut, Cap, and Balance is quickly gaining momentum,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, which was largely responsible for drafting the legislation. “Senate Democrats should stop hiding behind a procedural vote to block a plan with two-to-one support from the American public. So long as it has the support of the American people, Cut, Cap, and Balance remains very much alive.”...

Because the package under discussion includes tax increases as well as spending cuts, Reid claimed, and due to the Constitutional requirement that all revenue bills originate in the lower chamber, “the path to avert default now runs first to the House of Representatives…We in the Senate must wait for them.”

...and two thirds of Americans support a near term solution that includes tax increases and spending cuts. Curiously, certain tax increases have public support of 65% or greater and NO spending cut has approval of greater than 47% (that would be defense cuts).... with most have approval of less than 40%. From a public opinion perspective, tax increases are clearly the way to go.

Given that public opinion is so important to your politics, I conclude that you also support tax increases and are less excited by spending cuts.... If not, than stand-down on your shallow arguments.

Your point?? Where does that equate to 2/3rds people supporting cut, cap and balance in your OP??

So more people want a constitutional amendment to balance the budget?? So what?? I fail to see how that supports your views or your claims??

I think a constitutional amendment would be silly?? According to the constitution, we all have equal rights.. So why isn't SSM legal in all states?? I just don't see how it would do any good.. Bush showed that he could ignore the constitution whenever he wanted.. Warrantless wire taps and so on..

What I want to know is why republicans want an amendment?? They don't follow the constitution to begin with.. They like to appear that they do.. But who is it exactly that is against equality in marriage?? Who is it exactly that is against Abortion?? Who is making the claim that mandate is unconstitutional because it isn't in the constitution to give the government that power?? Well?? Assult rifles aren't in the constitution either.. Why is it legal for civilians to own them?? I thought if it wasn't specifically specified then it wasn't legal?? The right to bare arms only applies to the single shot musket, the weapon of the day when it was written.. Or are you going to be stupid enough to make the claim that people should own nukes?? Also not mentioned in the constitution.. Common sense has to come into play here somwhere??

Republicans just seem to be really short on it these days..

I highly doubt that 2/3 of Americans have the foggiest idea of what "cut, cap, and balance" even means

then feel free to peruse the questions above and see how confusing you think they are. I'm willing to bet that the American people grasp the concept of a Balanced Budget Amendment much better than they grasp the Presidents' make-believe "I swear I have a plan in my head" Plan.

:shrug: that's an argument against polling in general, not against Cut Cap and Balance. feel free to take it to the "so many people shun GOP approach" threads.

yup. it looks like the American people just want this solved, and are willing to accept a wide variety of specifics to get there.

which is why it is notable that only one Party in Congress has ever supplied their specifics on how to get there.

I was originally going to respond to this.... then i realized: it's just a series of rants, and not even good ones. nothing of substance here, move along.
