Chrysler UAW workers caught doping, drinking-----Again-----

Never in my lifetime have I seen alcohol or drug use improve work ethic or quality control........just the opposite.
Man you must of never knew any cooks or chiefs then..

Every employee I have ever caught drinking, toking, sleeping, acting like a unions slob, on the job.......I canned with extreme prejudice.......
Sooo all union members "drink, toke, and sleep on the job"? All union members do this?

Depends on how drunk and stoned he is. I work on my motorcycle a lot, and perhaps during the course of taking it apart and putting it back together, PBR gets consumed. Maybe even a bowl. Who knows, depends on if one of my buddies is with me. I haven't killed myself yet. Now if I were really drunk...well actually then I couldn't work on cars. But I know a lot of mechanics and people who tool around with their own vehicles. A couple beers isn't enough to impair us so much that we can't work on a vehicle.

The point is that you're making a fear argument. Somehow these people drinking is going to make it so you won't have brakes and airbags in your minivan. It's absurd, of course it depends on how much they were drinking and smoking. If someone has a beer and maybe a hit; fine, not going to dramatically effect their job. People do it a lot with no consequences. That's not to say that the company can't have a zero tolerance policy. They are more than free to do so. Rather the point is that your fear argument isn't completely rational as it depends on quantity and given the automation of factory lines, those idiots having a beer isn't going to cause your minivan to not have airbags. That's an idiotic argument.

Actually I don't own anything from Chrysler but that isn't the point. Also you do realize that not only does EVERY SINGLE CAR MANUFACTURER have their own QC department but they also hire 3rd party quality control to check over the work? Let me give you a great example--I work at a place that makes the window linings for Honda, Toyota, and Lexus. You know the window linings that have the chrome:

Such as the ones on that Honda Odyssey? Yeah I make those. If there is a ripple, dent, or so much as a small 1cm scratch on one of those, there goes a part that cost $12 in materials that they charge $89 for (just for say, the top outer front door for an example). You want to know what else? My non-union job, as decent as it may be, during the busy season they love to work us 6-7 days a week for 10 hours a day. The longer they do this, for some "strange reason" the quality goes down. So I think while those guys need to be disciplined and possibly (likely fired) I think that suggesting that the fate and safety of a Chrylser owner hinges on those few individuals you shown is ridiculous.

Also what does me being older, smarter, and less liberal have to do with using common sense and being more knowledgeable about the industry than you ever will be in your life? Not much. Also don't try to bring my child into any of your silly arguments ever again. Thanks.

EDIT: I just remembered that not only does a supplier have its own QC, then its own 3rd party QC, but QC at the customer will look it over as well. Sometimes 2 days before Sat I would be told I got to work Sat and Sun because of some total bull**** like the flocking being 1MM from the edge of the line (the fuzzy part of a car door that the window goes into). Seriously. So I am pretty sure that if car companies get their panties in the bunch of stuff like that they do over ummm brakes and the drive train lol.

Unions nowadays have absolutely nothing to do with minimum wages and weekends. Both of those would exist if unions did not at this point.

It aggregates the arbitration power of the workers over the whole to allow them better ability to argue compensation for their labor in contract negotiations with employers.

To protect workers from being underpaid, to protect workers from being overworked, contract negotiations, looking out for worker rights, able to bargain on work safety standards, maintain the quality of labor at a specific job, helps prevent forms of exploitation, and more.

unions have been gutted so much in the past 30 years that i find it difficult to believe that any rational human being can consider them a convenient demon.

meanwhile, countless non-union workers still benefit from the changes and improvements in working conditions that the work of unions led to.

My job is non-union as well. I am essentially chained to work. I don't get to see the outside on many days (the windows in the lab are covered up to prevent light contamination). Cattle prods are conferences in my field. Weekends are assumed that you will be working. 10-12 hours a day standard.

Well one can't really add another day to the week. However, we have seen what it was like before Unions and proper oversight. Where do you think child labor laws came from? Businesses handing out candy to children on their way to school?
