Republicans are acting like vandals | The Australian

Perception from the land down under.

So the political parties are clear that they need to reach a compromise, right? Surely conservatives, of all people, would not want to trash the US's debt rating, risk the savings of millions and throw the world economy into a new depression.

Well, that's where you're wrong. The controlling faction of the Republican Party appears more than eager to push the US and the world over a fiscal and economic cliff. It has all but held a gun to the head of President Barack Obama, telling him that unless he takes the raising of taxes off the table they will let the global economy collapse. Some within the faction even hope that might help them defeat Obama in next year's presidential election.

I sincerely wish I could be bipartisan on this and write a column saying that blame lies on both sides. But I can't. The debt itself is bipartisan, built up over many years, but only the Democrats are taking responsibility for paying it back. Today's Republican Party in the US is so extreme, so doctrinaire and so reckless it stands alone on this question.

and they would be right....tax increases have to be on the table, as well as spending cuts....

Democrats cant even bring themselves to cut a Cowboy Poetry Contest or NPR............its an empty table........

I thought NPR was like over 90% self sufficient. Oh but wait, its one of the most middle of the aisle media bodies in the US and therefore the enemy.

However, you are misinformed as the democrats already agreed to over $2 trillion in cuts. The Australians knew that.

Why do y'all give a crap what the Aussies think?

No.....its but a small step in the journey of 14,000,000,000,000.00 miles.......and Democrats find themselves unable to take baby step numero uno.

.....if Democrats cant bring themselves to cut Cowboy Poetry Contests.....they sure as hell arent going to touch the big budget items. (D)estined for Bankruptcy........

The Aussies are still lap dogs of the Brits. So, why is there opinion important??

I guess that's why they denied Juan Williams his 1st Amendment rights?

Yes just like Obama agreed to "Go through the Federal Budget Line by Line"........"Unemployment wouldnt go above 8% if we passed his PORKULUS"......and the crowd favorite..........."I will cut the budget deficit in half by the end of my first term"

.....instead he tripled it.

.......if Democrats agreed to $6 trillion in spending increases.......that would at least be somewhat believable.

Other than a few things written by Richard Brautigan and Brendan Behan I don't like poetry. Cowboy poetry isn't even on my radar. I do understand the social importance of art, and I understand that art often cannot exist without public and private support. Poetry, music, literature, dance (ballet, modern dance and all that is, and forever will be, nothing I am even remotely interested in) and theater reflect the voice of the people. Not everyone wants to spend every weekend in the infield at the Daytona 500 screaming, "Show us your tits", although there is nothing wrong with that either.

I doubt Cowboy poetry pushes the boundaries but it needs to be heard. I'm not going to pony up (pun intended) the money to read it or hear it read. Most people aren't and it is my guess that it needs public and private support. Art is art - no one likes all of it, but it is necessary that it exists. And if we don't understand it or don't like we should continue to support it publicly for the people who do understand it. Art like sex should be allowed to find its own boundaries if it is to be truly enjoyed.

Do you understand the social importance of $14,000,000,000,000.00 of debt?

Art existed well before any form of government........and long before money was stolen from an unwilling citizenry to fund it.

Every cent of taxpayer money destined for Government Art Inc. should be stopped immediately.........

The hell you arent......your either going to pay for The DNC Cowboy Poetry Contest or Harry Reid is going to dispatch men with guns to go to your door and ensure you pay.

$14,000,000,000,000.00 and counting.........and you consider Government funded Art a necessity.....Gawd help us.

Ya know...I keep hearing this bull**** $2 trillion in cuts. Its over 10 years. Its $200billion. Im also willing to bet that those numbers can be raised or lowered at congressional whim.

We need to cut baseline budgets. Dems dont want that. We need to cut discretionary spending. Dems dont want that. We need to stop talking about rate of growth as thought its a cut. A CUT is cutting it from this years budget. Dems dont want that either. After all they just got through increasing the baseline budget for two years, cutting it back by 3% then blaming the GOP seems to be the gameplan. Class warfare with shifty accounting, such leadership.

Keep touting that $10 trillion, its smoke and mirrors and if you really thought about it, you'd know that.

The fact that people on the other side of the planet can see the **** for what it is gives me hope. It's not just "us vs them" it's "them showing their ass."

So lets see the cuts? For petes sake.....Democrats havent even produced a budget in OVER TWO YEARS? Can you show me any piece of Democrat Legislation in US HISTORY that actually proposed cutting spending anywhere near 2 trillion dollars? Your living in a fantasyland if you actually believe Democrats will a) cut that much and b) stop inventing other ways of spending our money.

Liberalism leads to Bankruptcy everywhere its tried....every time its tried....the US wont be an exception....

and they should make cuts , BUT, they should expect, and WE AS A COUNTRY, AS A WHOLE, should expect the republicans to get with the game plan and quit screwing around and pretending that tax increases are not needed.. ...i want some significant money to be chopped from this budget, i also want some tax increases, and those should be targeted to the top earners in this country...the repubs are hell bent on protecting their biggest contributors, and hell bent on screwing over everyone else...to ever balance this budget will require considerable give on both sides, or it wont happen..if repubs want significant cuts, they should expect to have support some tax increases.... a deal like that gives both sides political cover...the repubs are out of their damn minds if they think they are going to get something without giving something. contrary to the kool-aid you have been drinking/snorting/injecting, our ledger has two sides, we need cuts and increased revenue, you squeeze this budget problem from both ends and you get it to meet in the middle. if all you have to offer for this is blah blah blah liberal blah blah blah democrat, then move on, i'm not interested in hearing it from you....

Obama calls the GOP’s bluff - The Washington Post

LOVE IT. :D

Here’s how to negotiate, GOP-style: Begin by making outrageous demands. Bully your opponents into giving you almost all of what you want. Rather than accept the deal, add a host of radical new demands. Observe casually that you wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to the hostage you’ve taken — the nation’s well-being. To the extent possible, look and sound like Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.”

This strategy has worked so well for Republicans that it’s no surprise they’re using it again, this time in the unnecessary fight over what should be a routine increase in the debt ceiling. This time, however, something different is happening: President Obama seems to be channeling Robert De Niro in “Taxi Driver.” At a news conference last Wednesday, Obama’s response to the GOP was, essentially, “You talkin’ to me?”

Just to play along. how are democrats taking responsibility for paying back our debt. The squabble is where to find savings of 2-4 trillion over the next 10 years. This will still create more debt over this period. Neither side has taken the high ground in this debate as far as I am concerned. Even this trivial 2-4 trillion, neither side has put forth their recommendation on how to do it.

Seriously? I'm sorry. I do appreciate you taking the time to post. But I get tired of posting over and over and over again that the democrats already did the "meet you halfway" bit. I don't want to go dig up the URL's and quotes again. The information is out there. Hell, Australia has it. They know that the democrats offered deep cuts, and got nothing in return but the republicans walking out on the talks.

And you think that tax increases are going to magically raise revenues huh? Raising taxes right now could very well end up causing a decline in revenues.

Spending cuts and tax cuts will solve our economic ills........

They cant cut a Cowboy Poetry Contest Randel..........for the love of your not yet bankrup--but close--grandchildren's grandchildren..........please realize the Democrat Party is never....ever......ever going to deliver the significant cuts you and every other American is looking for.......because Democrats have never made a significant cut to anything in this country's history......
