Michele Bachmann: John Quincy Adams Was 'One Of Our Founding Fathers'

I'm curious. When are the partisan hacks on the left who point out things like this and the partisan hacks on the right who point out things like this about Obama going to realize that all these candidates are human, make mistakes, and those of you pointing this out and making a big deal about it and proving that you have no credibility in discussing politics?

You know what scares me the most?

That I could bet $10 that most Americans don't know the difference either between John Adams and John Quincy Adams and I would win.

The city of Lauderhill, Florida, was once off by one word too.

For their Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration they commissioned a plaque with the stamps commemorating several African-American civil rights leaders, including MLK, Jr. The plaque was commissioned to be given to James Earl Jones, who was going to speak at the celebration.

When the plaque arrived, it was instead inscribed with the name "James Earl Ray."

Being off on a name by one word can mean an awful lot.

Very true... when I first started reading your post I thought the story would be someone got the day itself wrong, and that it would be Martin Luther Day... I'm glad it wasn't that serious and I'd bet James took it well in stride.

I wouldn't bet against you... those "man on the street" interviews Jay Leno does makes me cringe every time I see them.

I'm skeptical that they would know anything about them, let alone the difference between them. Although that recent HBO series might have helped some people to recognize the name. The father isn't even on any of our money, so I wouldn't expect any recognition.

He almost never actually speaks his mind at the moment and almost always uses prepared speeches. When he does speak his mind with nothing in front of him his level of speaking goes down to the point where he sounds like a ghetto kid.

Pathetic...

And Bachman, a Presidential candidate, doesn't know that J.Q Adams was not only NOT a founding father, but was born LONG after the founding fathers founding this country. So, what do each of these things prove? Just that partisan hacks on each side will make big deals out of them because they are... partisan hacks.

When was the U.S. founded? I believe that most people would say it was when the Constitution was written. It could be the Declaration of Independence, but then Hamilton and Adams would not be Founding Fathers as neither was involved in the Declaration. If it is the writing of the Constitution, John Quincy would be 20 years-old. While he was not a Founding Father, he was an adult in 1787.

John Adams did not own any slaves nor did John Quincy. He was an avid opponent of slavery. Her statement was incorrect, but, as you have correctly stated, partisans will make hay over the smallest of things. Personally, I could care less about the gaffes of Obama or Biden. I am most concerned about the dangerous policies of the Democrats.

He was 9 years old at the time of the revolt. So he was not born long after. He was born before...
I have a book on Adams. maybe I should go get it off my bookshelf and thumb through it again.

Obama made the gaffe in Beaverton, Oregon; he had visited three states that day on the campaign; he was understandably very tired. What's Michele Bachmann's excuse?

Two gaffes. Both wrong. No excuses. If I were to stay awake for 48 or 72 hours straight, I'd bet that I would remember that there are 50 states. I would also remember that John Quincy was not a Founding Father. Much ado about nothing.

She's off by one word --- Quincy.

Moral of the Story - Do NOT watch an episode of Dr. Quincy MD just before making a campaign speech.

You really dated yourself here.:2razz:

No I didn't. I would have dated myself if I told you that I remember an episode of the Perry Como Show on TV..... Oops, I just dated myself. LOL.

Barack Obama on the other hand is brilliant.

First, it was just a single insurgent, jumping out from behind a boulder. Then, the whole valley seemed to explode with gunfire. Within seconds, Rob and his patrol were pinned down, with almost no cover — bullets and rocket-propelled grenades raining down from every direction. And when enemy reinforcements poured in, the odds were overwhelming. Rob’s small patrol of two dozen men was nearly surrounded by almost 150 insurgents.

With the enemy just feets away
— some so close he could see their faces — Rob held his ground. Despite the chaos around him, he radioed back enemy positions. As the only Pashto speaker on his team, he organized the Afghan soldiers around him. But the incoming fire, in the words of one soldier, was simply “astounding.”

I really don't care, though. What bothers ME are the hacks on each side who go out of their way to defend those on their side, and out of the way to attack those on the other for the same kinds of errors. Folks who do this are hypocritical. We see it in the Obama thread, the Palin threads, and now this thread. It's hypocritical and ridiculous behavior. Whenever you see someone who makes these gaffes a big deal, you automatically know that the individual doing that has no credibility.

For a person who supposedly doesn't care, you sure have a lot to say.

And?

BACHMANN WARNED ‘THE LION KING’ WAS GAY PROPAGANDA: At the November 2004 EdWatch National Education Conference, Bachmann said the “normalization” of homosexuality would lead to “desensitization”: “Very effective way to do this with a bunch of second graders, is take a picture of ‘The Lion King’ for instance, and a teacher might say, ‘Do you know that the music for this movie was written by a gay man?’ The message is: I’m better at what I do, because I’m gay.”

BACHMANN CLAIMED ABOLISHING THE MINIMUM WAGE WOULD CREATE JOBS: While testifying in front of the Minnesota Senate in 2005, Bachmann said, “Literally, if we took away the minimum wage — if conceivably it was gone — we could potentially virtually wipe out unemployment completely because we would be able to offer jobs at whatever level.” This isn’t remotely true. Even simply reducing the minimum wage would, as Paul Krugman noted, “at best do nothing for employment; more likely it would actually be contractionary.”

BACHMANN CLAIMED THAT SCIENTISTS ARE SUPPORTERS OF INTELLIGENT DESIGN: During a 2006 debate, Bachmann said, “There are hundreds and hundreds of scientists, many of them holding Nobel Prizes, who believe in intelligent design.” This was, and is, not true.

BACHMANN LIKENED VISITING IRAQ TO VISITING MALL OF AMERICA: In 2007, Bachmann returned from a junket to Iraq and told her colleagues, “[T]here’s a commonality with the Mall of America, in that it’s on that proportion. There’s marble everywhere. The other thing I remarked about was there is water everywhere.” As ThinkProgress documented at the time, the comparison was preposterous.

BACHMANN CLAIMED THAT CARBON DIOXIDE IS ‘HARMLESS’: In 2008, a Stanford scientist revealed “direct links” between increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and “increases in human mortality” — globally, he found that as many as “20,000 air-pollution-related deaths per year per degree Celsius may be due to this greenhouse gas.” The next year, Bachmann, who is not a scientist, said that “carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn’t even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas.”

BACHMANN CALLED FOR A CONGRESSIONAL WITCH HUNT: Pivoting off the news of Barack Obama’s alleged relationship to former Weather Underground member William Ayers, and his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bachmann accused the candidate of having “anti-American views.” She then suggested that Congressional liberals — including Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid — ought to be subject to “an exposé” by the media because of their views. “I think people would love to see like that,” she told a stunned Chris Matthews.

BACHMANN SUGGESTED GAY SINGER SHOULD REPENT AFTER GETTING CANCER: Bachmann saw Melissa Etheridge’s cancer as a teachable moment: “Unfortunately she is now suffering from breast cancer, so keep her in your prayers,” she said in November 2004. “This may be an opportunity for her now to be open to some spiritual things, now that she is suffering with that physical disease. She is a lesbian.”

If someone is unintelligent they shouldn't be a candidate for president. If they seem to be getting information from history revisionists, and taking it seriously, this is important to know about. I really don't see why this is irrelevant. I wnt our presidents to be smarter than the average, which really isn't asking much.

The notion that the founders worked tirelessly until slavery was abolished is revisionist crapola.

The thing I don't like is that she won't admit to the mistake. She would get some respect from me for that.

This seems really minor. And not a reason to reject her.

Now, her statements regarding scientific education are another story. America is already behind in science and math. And the future is strongly within science and math. When we have a candidate who has directly called for teaching what amounts to magic in the science classroom, that does not bode well for America's future. She has put forth that Intelligent Design, which boils down to "can't explain now because of (fill in the blank, whatever is easier for you to grasp), supernatural was the reason!" as being a viable scientific topic that should be taught in classrooms will likely have a poor impact upon how we teach science in America. Furthermore, someone who views what we cannot explain now as the doing of the supernatural says much about how she views facts. And we need a level headed, reality based President.

The fact the argued for magic as science trumps any of these stupid statements.

Not a fan of Bachman and don't really think she has much chance at the nomination. But with regard to the OP, who really cares and why is Stephanopolis grilling Bachman on Early American History questions? The only goal seems to be chalk up another "talking point" whenever she gets one wrong.

Maybe it happened, but i really don't remember Democratic candidates getting these same lines of questions in the past....

.

When has Obama been grilled on early American History?

Are you saying such threads should never be created, such incidents should never be noted?

Yeah, pretty much. I see zero point in any of them other than for partisan hacks to attack and other partisan hacks to defend. These kinds of incidents are meaningless to the intelligent as an issue to take into consideration when deciding on a candidate. If they're not, and they will have a major affect on who you vote for, I really would want you not to vote.

My job around here is to point out the partisan hacks, hackish comments and positions, and hypocrisy... the last of which I demonstrated that you committed. Keeps me busy and off the streets.

Pathetic...

What is pathetic is you haven't showed me anything to change my mind. Does he actually sound intelligent without a prepared speech? If he does it should be very easy for you to show me how I'm wrong.
