The results are in on social security

I think you have your head in the sand. The money is gone. It was replaced by IOUs. We can never make it up. The Ponzi scheme is collapsing.

Bring our Military back home, quit meddling in foreign affairs, quit foreign aide, all of it, tax imports, bring jobs back home, put able bodied welfare recipients to work, close the borders, rethink the war on drugs.
Yes we can.

So the full faith and credit of the USA means nothing to you? The Constitution means nothing to you? The welfare of American people means nothing to you?

Amazing.

Yes we can.

The issue with 90% of what you mention is the need for oil to maintain our lifestyle.

I remember when Barney and Dem's in general said Fannie and Freddie were solvent, no worries. If SS is in such great shape why Is Obama saying people wont get their checks unless we can borrow more money from China and raise taxes on Americans? Fuzzy math squared.

Hoax and chains?
Return each department to the size it had on the day the president took the oath of office. Eliminate spending on nObamacare. Widen the tax base so that all working Americans pay federal income taxes. Eliminate all income tax credits.

Or do absolutely nothing and see what happens.

from Misterv

Widen the tax base so that all working Americans pay federal income taxes.

That resulted from the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts in which 91% of the YES votes came from Republican members of Congress. I would support letting ALL those expire.

LOL, imagine that, the GOP criticizes Obama for wanting to do what a majority of non federal income tax paying Americans want him to do, eliminate tax breaks for the wealthy and cut spending to reduce the deficit! Shocking I tell you, shocking! :sun
I think my added bolded words provide an appropriate little extra something that makes it all clear.

I think you are saying that president Bush signed laws removing people from the tax rolls. If that is what you meant to say I completely agree with you. It is time to reverse course so that all pay some instead of some paying all.

kinda looks like President Clinton's ex secretary of labor has the social security problem figured out.:2wave:

< Back in 1983, the ceiling was set so the Social Security payroll tax would hit 90 percent of all wages covered by Social Security. That 90 percent figure was built into the Greenspan Commission’s fixes. The Commission assumed that, as the ceiling rose with inflation, the Social Security payroll tax would continue to hit 90 percent of total income.>

<Today, though, the Social Security payroll tax hits only about 84 percent of total income.>

<If we want to go back to 90 percent, the ceiling on income subject to the Social Security tax would need to be raised to $180,000.>

<Presto. Social Security’s long-term (beyond 26 years from now) problem would be solved.>

Robert Reich (The Only Social Security Reform Worth Considering: Raising the Ceiling on Income Subject to It)

sounds like a reasonable solution.

Bush came up with the initiatives and trumpeted in his State of the Union speeches. Then Congress voted to enact and 91% of the votes came from Republican members of both houses.

Lets get rid of those - ALL the Bush tax cuts. I think everyone should be invested in the nation and all wage earners should at least pay 5% in taxes - no matter what deductions they have. 5% should be the minimum federal tax for those making the lowest incomes. I would impost other levels of a minimum ax at other levels so regardless of deductions, all end up paying.

Not just Bush, those taxes have been eroding at least since Carter.

Does this mean you agree with me that the tax base should be widened to include everyone who works? If so this might be a first.

how about of a percentage of ALL INCOME?

how about of a percentage of ALL INCOME?
As long as it is even-handed, not designed around the peculiar idea of having a steeply progressive tax system so as to wreck capitalism (yes, Marx did want it) and is agreed to by our political system.

Cool, lets get it thru then.

It is only gone, if you consider the full faith and credit if the US to be worthless. It took decades of robbing SS, and it will take decades to fix SS. Fortunately, the solution has already been found without creating further hardship for seniors that are already hurting from the worst recession since the great depression. As has been referenced above, raise the FICA cap from its current limit of $106,000 to $180,000, and make the SS trust funds off limits to general fund use.

Crisis abated.

why cap it at $180,000
why should the rich not be subject to tax on their entire income just as the lower class wage earners
their high incomes do not prevent them from being able to draw social security - at the highest levels available

You make a excellent point! :sun

It's nice to see a lib admit that all we have in SS fund is a huge pile of IOU notes. In reality China pays old people, for now anyway.

In the same way China and SS paid for our optional decade long wars so we could provide tax cuts for the rich. Btw, it was the libs who suggested locking the SS Trust funds from General Fund use. I agreed with Gore's proposal to lock them but the country decided to go with the candidate they would rather drink a beer with.

So have another round of beers with Bush while we raise the FICA cap to fix this mess. :sun

Don't stop there. Lets look at Congress.
Madam Speaker, requesting a special place to fly to and fro, charging for every bottle of water, all expenses paid, courtesy of the American tax payers.
Brown being flown to OH, and back to DC, just to vote for the HC bill, all to rush what had to be forced onto the American people, come hell or high water.
What salary do our esteemed members of Congress receive, month after month, regardless of their private income, and what are their benefits...HC and pension especially?
How much do we spend, election after election, for all the district offices soooo desperately needing redecorating?
DOn't stop at the Maverick, although justified, but please lets look at all of them. None of them are hurting for anything, most don't even pump their own gas. Not sure how long they have to wait to have a procedure approved, but if won't be as long as it will take for one of ours, after the new HC bill takes full effect.
Please note, I said ALL, not just D, or R, or I or L...

I still say I sam glad you admit SS is broke and relies on borrowed money to pay seniors, thank you learn to take a compliment.

That would make a pretty good thread have a go at it.:2wave:
