Old people vote in high numbers, you can't **** with them. I just wish my age group voted in greater numbers.

But we have so many better things to do...

This is why I will never drink again.

The Republican at one point led large in the polls and then the tide turned.

Could this be an indicator of what seniors really think of the Ryan Plan and new Teaparty far right Governors ?

Democrat Kathy Hochul scored an upset victory Tuesday in a special election for Congress that was viewed as a proxy battle for the future of Medicare.

I don't understand this. Isn't Obamacare making cuts to medicare?

I don't understand this. Isn't Obamacare making cuts to medicare?

Not really.

They're cutting spending in Medicare by cracking down on Medicare fraud, and cutting subsidies for Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage has some major benefits, like free check-ups and preventitive care and cheaper meds, but these will be taken over by regular Medicare when the bill goes into full effect. Seniors caught in the switch-over are also getting reimbursed.

Yes obamacare cuts 400 billion from medicare...and seniors arent for obama care either....but Ryans plan ends medicare for all intents and purposes. The big mistake Ryan made was "claim" that his plan does not effect anyone 55 and older, then in his plan come 2022 when those 55 yrs old are 66 they will pay huge monthly copays that will go up yearly.

A few quick thoughts:

1. The outcome provides a snapshot at a specific point in time. It reflects sentiment expressed in a national Washington Post poll. It does not speak much about the 2012 election.
2. The 2012 election will likely turn on the state of the economy and expectations for the economy going forward for the most part.
3. There is a real need for policy makers to educate and inform the public on the overall fiscal challenges facing the nation, as the public's understanding of that issue is very poor. Failure to do so could create the kind of resistance that would make sustained credible fiscal consolidation impossible, no matter how it is structured (alternative approaches to the Medicare board or suggested vouchers could be devised).

Not to health care spending, no.

You believe this, though, because of advertisements run against President Obama which were repeated by Fox News, talk radio, bloggers, etc. A lie told often enough...

It's Obama that wants to create the death panels. How soon people forget.

Yet another complete and total lie repeated often by Fox pundits and related folk. This one is so absurd that to believe it requires a willingness to be ignorant in order to support some imaginary notion that Obama is secretly Hitler, so I will just tell you to Google it. Because me attempting to tell you that your delusion is wrong is probably futile.

EDIT: It does? How so? Seriously, this is an insane notion.

Why were the death panels removed from the bill?

Why were the death panels removed from the bill?

For the same reason a lot of probably good parts of the bill were removed. Pushing the bill forward become impossible with it included due to the Republican lie machine. And getting something done was just more important than keeping the provision.

Although let me note for clarity, it never included anything vaguely related to "death panels" in the first place. My post above is related to the actual provision, not the lie version of it.

Because people like you believed it was a death panel. You believed it because it was repeated over and over and over again despite being proven to be false. Hell, it wasn't even something that would be done "by a government agency" like you described in this thread, but you still believe that to be true. It was a conversation between you and your doctor, the same way people already do it. The only change is that the bill would have allowed medicare to foot the bill for that consultation with your doctor. If you chose to get it. It wasn't even mandatory.

If they weren't in fact, "death panels", why did the Dems remove that section from the bill?

End of life counciling from a government agency sounds alot like a death panel, to me.

Yeah, and death tax sounds like it applies to everybody, estate tax sounds like something only rich people play.

Just the conservative "persuasion" machinery doing its job!

A lie by any other name will still get your mouth washed out with soap.

Until you get out of college, then lying to America becomes a lucrative career!

When a government board conducts end of life counciling, I would call that a death panel. What would you call it?

How am I lieing?

Well, that isn't what the bill was creating, so who cares?

How am I lieing?

Your description of reality is inaccurate. I think you're misinformed and stubborn rather than a liar, personally. The consultation would have been done by your doctor, not a government board, and it would have been optional just like it is now.

The government wouldn't have been conducting anything, as Deuce stated in his post. Did you read it? This is between you and your doctor. This happens already. All the goverment was doing was offering to cover it.

So are you saying you don't want your doctor to know your wishes?

Which reminds me, the so-called death panel actually better ensures that your wishes would be kept. I would call that an "anti-death-panel."

It's really sad that the right-wing campaign of misinformation managed to get a benign provision like this removed from the bill. Conservatives should really check the bill's actual language on the specific clause and then start asking themselves what other issues they might have been misinformed on.

The bill mandated end of life counciling. You need to go back and read it.

You didn't make it up, and apparently believe it, so technically you're not lying.

You're just ignorantly repeating a lie made up by a professional for Sarah Palin.

Propaganda, ain't it grand?

But don't worry, the Dems are getting their lie machinery up and running, so soon nobody will be sure what the truth is.
