Missouri officials say tornado killed at least 89

I would not suggest making the entire home tornado resistant, just one particular room, large enough to contain the family for a couple of hours. Be it in the basement, or a large closet

Those can help in smaller Tornadoes. But an F3+ generally takes the entire house and leave just the slab. Basements are great if you CAN build them where you are. (soil conditions) But even then a direct hit you just get sucked out.

You especially can't sink a basement when you live at sea level (and we both do, I think). Our water table is maybe 3 feet down from the surface, so a basement would quickly turn into a swimming hole.

Problem here is we're on top of an Aquifer, and the water levels very close to the ground, plus the soil is wrong for it. My uncle and I had this conversation.. basically, you build a basement here you have to put in a sump pump and and all sorts of really crazy stuff.

It's just impossible where I live. Our only alternative would be to install a tornado room, and I really can't afford to do that right now.

They are very expensive, and won't do a lick of good if the Tornado a monster, like the one that ripped through Joplin, or Tuscaloosa.

Here you guys go, this is a great shot from the Jarrell Texas, AFTER the event.

Tornado took the HOUSE and the Foundation. If ONLY they had made their house "tornado resistant!"

Living in some places or any place have it's natural disaster threats we have to live with. When I moved to Dallas for couple of years I was scared to death of Tornadoes and was nearly caught up in one.

They still frighten me much more than Earth Quakes, but here in recent times Tornadoes have been showing up more and more in California.

Turns out they were always here but the media wasn't as numerous as they are today.

I pray for the people who have been affected by this devastation, and they need the help they can get as do those in the flooded areas.

These tornadoes seem really bad. I hope they stop soon.

Hi everyone. I live in Joplin. It was an F5 for sure that hit. Everything it touched was destroyed. This storm took the life of my kids grandmother on their moms side and very nearly killed every one of my children and my grand daughter. My business is just gone...there is nothing but a foundation where my office building was, it's just razed. There were bodies literally everywhere as it hit two apartment complexes that were next to my office building. It hit them directly. It was the most horrible thing I've ever seen.

You could not tell it was a tornado. My kids and I had just left my sons graduation and the family was on the way to meet their grandma and grandpa at Pizza Hut for dinner when it hit. My kids all went different directions and stopped before going to Pizza Hut, I think that is all that saved their lives because the storm hit the restaurant directly and killed several people, including their grandma. When I looked south down Range Line all I could see was a large black mass block the horizon. You could not tell it was a tornado. I was about a half mile from it maybe. It was the most terrifying event I've ever experienced. I could not reach my kids for nearly two hours. They finally began texting as that is really all that would work.

Our prayers and condolences Lerxt.

Thanks bro. Luckily Westboro Baptist Church is on their way here to celebrate the deaths from this storm, reveling in gods awesome judgement on our rebellious state. They also plan to protest President Obama and Governor Nixon. I'm not sure I'm gonna be the most rational person at the counter rally (read Pro Joplin/Anti Westboro) that day.

Remove all the valve stem pins from their vehicles. Get a local radio station to pretend that their home has been destroyed on the air and then have the police detain them due to death threats.

I'm glad you are okay and I am so sorry for your family's loss.

Don't worry about those assholes. There are some Patriot Guards in Texas getting ready to ride up there, and I am sure that there are more in other states doing the same. Phelps and his minions are going to be surrounded, ridiculed, and ridden out of Joplin on a rail.

I wish I could get in their bigoted little faces. Opportunist haters.

So, what would your plan be, Viktyr? Would you like to evacuate, permanently, all of the residents of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Texas and Louisiana? It's difficult to predict where a tornado will hit.
.

And Minneapolis. (Not the worst tornado of the bunch, but if we're moving people away from tornadoes...)

Lerxst, let us know if there is somethign we can do. Can we send you something, or donate, or help in some way?
