Tenn. Senate OKs ban on teaching of homosexuality

Kids pair up younger than that. It doesn't amount to anything other than saying, "he's my boyfriend" but it is there.

There is nothing wrong with teaching kids that some people pair up differently. Hatred and prejudice have to be fought against. My 3rd grade daughter was complaining about a boy that was picking on her and I said maybe he liked her. She made an ugly face and said, "but he's black." I was horrified. I know she didn't learn that from us but she already picked it up. This is the problem.

Or your third grader could simply be articulating that she isn't attracted to black guys. I'm not attracted to black women either, and if ever at all, it's only one's that are light skinned with white facial features..

Am I racist too?

Not because of your lack of attraction, no.

You're still in favor of big government intrusions into school district decision-making, though.

That's an odd point, but interesting.

I myself didn't find many black women attractive, until hair extensions/weaves became popular.

So evidently I'm a "hair" man!

Legs and ass myself, just not the big booty type that black women tend to have. :)

Actually I'm not in favor of big government anything. I firmly believe in States rights, with more power and authority to regulate, and legislate at the most fundamental local levels.

What's next a bill prohibiting teachers from saying some people are black......or some people are Jewish.....

Wow...

Ya know.. this is what's wrong with our country these days. On page 2 of this thread I indicated exactly what this bill says, and people (Such as you DD) are still suggesting it says something different?

No you didn't....at least not on my page 2...I went through the first five pages of this thread and there is no post from you to be seen.

The most fundamental local level, in this case, is the school district. Therefore the state is superseding local authority to tell school districts what they have to do. This same legislature also voided a Memphis and Nashville law that adds sexual orientation as a protected class for workplace equality, thus superseding municipal authority.

Considering this same legislature passed a silly and symbolic bill saying the Feds shouldn't tell them what to do, it's hypocritical of them to override local law in pursuit of their antigay agenda.

It's nothing but big government intrusion into local government. And if you support it, then you support a form of big government telling local government what to do.

Damn was it really that much in. Post 402 but I think I read up to page 2 and then decided that no one knew what was actually in the damn Bill.. :)

and if true then I would agree. I would not support this type of intrusion.

Wow, I just don't even know where to start. If it was about attraction she would have said he wasn't cute. As for you, only you know if the lack of attraction is due to "facial features" or skin color.

OK, now I'm offended. Women are not a collection of body parts put together for your amusement.

Actually yes.

Tennessee Tea Party Groups Issue Demand On How Textbooks Portray 'Minority Experience In History'

A coalition of Tennessee Tea Party groups has formulated a list of "demands" focused on the state's educational curriculum and political agenda that they want the state's legislature to heed this session.

As far as their educational concerns, the panel writes that they want to "compel the teaching of students in Tennessee the truth regarding the history of our nation and the nature of its government," a failure that they claimed had been brought about by "neglect and outright ill will," The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

Hal Rounds, spokesman for the group, recently claimed at news conference that there was "an awful lot of made-up criticism about, for instance, the Founders intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another."

As a result, the Tea Party organizations argue, there should be "no portrayal of minority experience in the history which actually occurred shall obscure the experience or contributions of the Founding Fathers, or the majority of citizens, including those who reached positions of leadership."

Amusement, no. Attraction, umm hate to break it to ya but yes they are indeed a collection of body parts; at least initially. :)

on attraction:

as most of you know, I have two adopted sons that are black. we don't spend tons of time discussing racial issues. we tend to deal with them as they come up or as the boys have questions. I myself find a wide variety of females attractive. skin color is the least important variable. I have seen some very attractive women who were very dark skinned. both my boys are teenagers now and the subject of girls comes up quite frequently.

neither of my sons finds black girls attractive. neither one finds redheads attractive (I am a BIG fan of redheads) the younger one (13) seems partial to blondes and the older one (almost 16) seems to have a thing for the asian girls.

I don't see how this can be a "cultural" thing since I have always expressed a diverse sense of what I thought was attractive since they were both younger.

Exactly.. Attraction is a very persoanl thing, and I will concede that at maybe some level there might be some cultural influence involved, but not sure to which, if any degree.

So we're agreeing that attraction is largely an inherent personality trait?

Unbelievable. Well at least it wasn't my home state that did it.

I guess don't talk about being gay and maybe less people will turn out gay, is the idea?

This is good news,,,,,,,Parents should be the oness to teach homosexuality if they see fit to do so...........

But no one was teaching it in the first place. It's a big government solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

You're a little late to this game, Navy.

Why stop there? Parents should teach about slavery if they see fit to do so. Parents should teach about war if they see fit to do so. Parents should teach about genocide if they see fit to do so. In fact, schools should not teach any history or current events, that should be left entirely to parents. There is no more basis for schools to teach children that slavery, war, genocide, etc. exist in the world than there is to teach them that gays exist.

I taught my kids and I believe most responsible parents should do the same....Schools are suppose to each reading, writing, and math.......

To compare something as deeply personal as sexuality to any of the topics you mentioned does a disservice to all those subjects, including sexuality.

Just not Oscar Wilde or Walt Whitman. Oh, and when you're teaching writing, if the child happens to have a family member who is gay, they shouldn't write about him or her. Oh, but then, the teacher can't tell the student not to write about gay family members, because it's now illegal for her to say "gay".

In fact, you can't even discuss this bill because the bill itself would be illegal to discuss because it deals with homosexuality.
