Talbot County schools are under fire for suspending two Easton High School lacrosse players over equipment they kept in their bags to fix their sticks.
“It’s a huge overreaction for a very minor infraction, and it wasn’t handled well at all,” said Graham Dennis, suspended student.
Laura Dennis’ son Graham had a pen knife and a Leatherman that school authorities found while they searched a team bus before it headed to a game. He now faces jail time and damage to his permanent record.
“A police officer came and took him away in handcuffs and they said ‘Give us 40 minutes, we have to process him,’ Laura Dennis said. “So they did mug shots and they fingerprinted. I was able to pick him up from the police department 45 minutes later.”
Doug Edsall’s son Casey had a lighter he also used to fix his lacrosse stick. The school classified it as an explosive device.

One does not defy the Government Bureaucratic idiocy.

you have GOT to be ****ing kidding. I wonder if the teachers who smoke and carry lighters would be arrested for having 'explosive devices'.

Holy **** this is dumb. :doh

I knew a girl in HS..straight A student, honor roll, secretary of the student government...all around good girl. During random vehicle searches one day they found a steak knife and an apple core in her truck. She received OSS (out of school suspension) for two weeks, lost all of her exam exemptions, and wasn't allowed to attend any extra functions, including student counsil meetings.

Apple cores will **** you up.

Zero tolerance rules are great because that means teachers and school administrators don't have to actually think or have an opinion or use judgment!

Whats the point of this topic? They made a dumb decision and overreacted, and so?

No point, carry on. Ignore that two good kids, who used some common, non-threatening tools to fix sports equipment should face suspension, criminal records and possible other punishments. Nothing to discuss or worry about here... not all...

I know, right? Dangerous little buggers, those.

This actually reminds me. I have a friend, smart guy who goes to Johns Hopkins University. One night he was walking home from a party twirling his butterfly knife in his hand. In Maryland, being in possession of almost any bladed weapon, including switchblades and butterfly knives is illegal. He got spotted by a fellow student who promptly notified the police. My friend was arrested and expelled from JHU. In this case I don't know who to blame more, people who make anti-knife laws, or my friend for being a moron.

At least he wasn't a very good student to begin with, so I guess it wasn't that much of a loss for him cuz he was getting pretty terrible grades anyway.

it didn't happen to him so he doesn't care.

Blame the assholes who called the cops for someone having a knife.

Whoot!!! There it is!!! Best Answer.

Probably thinks the kids didn't get enough punishment.

No, that's probably an unfounded assumption on your part.

I bet you also assume that because you're against this, this must be a liberal thing and therefore liberals must favor it.

No. But I blame our litigious society for this. And the left does happen to be the back pocket of the trial lawyers...

To a person, I'm sure there are liberals just as outraged as I am at this. But let's be honest here, these zero tolerance laws all about saving schools from paying huge lawsuits then they are about protecting kids.
