Newt Gingrich to launch presidential bid Wednesday - On Politics: Covering the US Congress, Governors, and the 2010 Election - USATODAY.com

But he didn't wait. He announced today, May 9th, 2011.

Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich has announced that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. president in 2012. Gingrich’s plans were made public via Facebook and Twitter Monday, where he also asked supporters to tune into his Fox News interview with Sean Hannity on Wednesday night.

Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich; Obama is screwed, blued and tattooed.

Question. Why would this man say such a thing?

"No question Newt is an ideas machine, and he'll add intellectual heft to the debate," said Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to President George W. Bush. But "he's just been around the track one too many times. At a time when people are hungry for something different, new and refreshing, Newt just feels stale."

My guess is, he's backing another horse.

I could go for a Cain/Gingrich ticket.....That would be a wonderful thing to watch.

I think, we are in pretty good shape with that duo

Newt is more intelligent than all of the other gops running. Hes not stale to me, hes far enough right but not off the charts like some of them.

Where are you seeing that? I just read that article word-for-word. Did you?

To believe Obama is easily defeat able, is just as dangerous as believing no one can beat him.

Dont count your chickens before they're hatched.

More background information.

Newt Gingrich Biography - Biography.com

Gingrich was seen as the architect of the victory, especially noted for helping draft the “Contract with America,” a document outlining legislation to be enacted by the House within the first 100 days of the 104th Congress. Among the proposals were tax cuts, a permanent line-item veto, and a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget. In December 1994 Gingrich was chosen by the majority Republicans as House speaker, and he assumed the office the following month. With one exception, all parts of the “Contract with America” were passed by the House.

Judging by everything I've read thus far, I would think logically Cain/Gingrich is the order they should run.

Bozo the Clown could say he is running and cons would declare Obama finished by landslide.

And dems would bite.

Don't worry, Limbaugh said that's easily defeated. That makes it fact.

Seriously? Newt is a hypocrite lizard and doesn't stand a rat's ass chance. He'll be out before New Hampshire.

I'm not sold on anybody yet...but one thing I will say...Obama seems to be getting more snippy, more short, a little more caustic when he's speaking with reporters/donors/during speeches. It seems (to me, anyway) that maybe he's getting a little stressed, tired of the job/responsibility.

He'll need to go back to his motivational-speaker quality if he wants to win. When he's "frank" he almost comes off like a d*ck. I don't think that will serve him well during the campaign cycle.

And what is Obama? Besides the most unqualified person to ever occupy the seat?

I've said for a while, I don't think Newt would make a good Presidential nominee but I could see him being an excellent person to draft for the VP slot. Specifically if someone like Mitt wins the nomination who is thought of as a more "moderate" candidate and could use a VP to entice the base.

No one is going to want to touch Newt with the baggage that he has. This would be like John Edwards trying to run for President, but worse. It's never going to happen

Okay, I'm doing some reading myself, but I'd appreciate it if those of you who have specific reasons for thinking he's unacceptable, would be willing to share them.

I'm aware of his infidelity issues and multiple marriages...but what baggage does he have that would reflect on his ability to run the country?

I don't think it has any impact on his ability to actually run the country. However, image is definitely a factor in whether or not he can get enough votes. It'd be understand if, as DD says, people "don't want to touch him because he has baggage." People also generally don't like their leaders to be blatant hypocrites.

My memory may be faulty on Newt, but he didn't go screwing around on his Cancer ridden wife while using her cancer stricken self as some kind of campaign prop, so going to question the "worse".

Second, the very fact that Newts big transgressions were almost a decade ago also makes the suggestion that it'd be "worse" a bit ridiciulous as time does allow for healing and/or dulling of situations not to mention time to suggest a "change".

Yes, Newt's got a good bit of baggage. Baggage that I think would hinder him from truly running as a presidential candidate. But I think it would be mitigated a fair bit as a VP nod.
