thinking? your asking alot...lolWe know. We also know that doing away with them will not solve state problems. Other factors are involved. Other than mindlessly posting links, try thinking it through just a little bit.

We also know that doing away with them will not solve state problems.
and leaving them status quo is suicide
state pensions WILL be fundamentally reformed, consequences as inevitable as phsyics
think
LOL!
It is certainly something that has to be addressed in some way
That's not true either. Everything depends on many factors. It is certainly something that has to be addressed in some way, but it is not desirable to have teachers with no pension. We ahve a pretty good pension system here in Iowa, and our problems will be here with or without keeping a pension for those who worked for us.
Why not?? Most of the rest of the world had no pensions and seem to get by just fine.

I'll leave the commentary to others, then again... my bet is it's because the teachers aren't paid enough for their fabulous performance.
It can't get any worse, so why not try something different, radical... like vouchers and ridding the city of unionized teachers?
.
"Most of the rest of the world" does not get by just fine.
it is not desirable to have teachers with no pension
Really??? Got any facts to back that up.
I know I'm getting along fine without one, along with every single person I know and work with.
80% of the world lives on less than $10 a day. "Most of the rest of the world" does not get by just fine. You're right, most of the world doesn't have pensions...probably because they don't even have money.
Poverty Facts and Stats ? Global Issues
Awww, they obviously need to form a union and all their troubles will be solved. Meanwhile the rest of us will take care of ourselves without depending on a union pension.
What are you even talking about? My point is that it's beyond dumb, in general, to say "most of the rest of the world" is doing just fine. The relative crap that most of the world is dealing with has nothing to do with pensions or unions so I have no idea why you would even bring them up. First, you're wrong about everybody else being "just fine" and now you're wrong about pensions and unions having anything to with it. Don't talk about what you don't understand. If you want to make a case about pensions and unions stick to places where pensions and unions are relevant, not to places where people make $10/day.
Half the people from Detroit can read! Wow! That's great news.
Five employees of the Detroit public school system were charged Wednesday with multiple felonies as part of an investigation into alleged corruption and the loss of tens of millions of dollars in school funds.
The investigation to uncover fraud within the Detroit Public Schools has found evidence that millions of dollars in district funds have been misappropriated, stolen or embezzled. Six district employees have been immediately suspended.
DPS Inspector General John Bell announced the findings at a press conference today detailing “only a few” of the 85 individual fraud investigations launched by his office, created by DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb earlier this year in order to uncover fraud within the state’s largest school district.
Even as Bobb’s investigation team, with help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has worked to uncover “every red penny” slated to support education in the district, “people continue to steal from us…creating cesspools of corruption,” Bobb said.
A handful of cases were detailed at the conference, involving six DPS employees – two custodians, an accountant, a cafeteria cashier, a security officer and two principals – who have been suspended as a result of the investigation.
The announcement was made shortly before the DPS fiscal year 2009-2010 budget is slated to be adopted. The district is facing a $285 million deficit, even after Bobb’s turnaround team cut $295 million from the upcoming budget.
Evidence indicated that the two custodians stole 30 DPS laptop computers worth $52,439, and further inquiries found that two DPS teachers and a teacher’s aide had three of the computers, said Bell.
Another investigation between the FBI and the DPS Office of Inspector General indicated that an accountant of 15 years at Golightly Career and Technical Center stole $30,000-$60,000 from the center, another $1,500 from the Golightly Middle School and was overpaid by more than $1,300 for hours not worked last summer.
The principal of Golightly was suspended for using $1,884 in DPS funds to repair her vehicle, additional funds to pay for funeral floral arrangement and a reception for 60-80 guests and paying a vendor $30,000 to install audio-visual equipment, while much of the equipment was never delivered or installed, Bell said.
Awww, they obviously need to form a union and all their troubles will be solved. Meanwhile the rest of us will take care of ourselves without depending on a union pension.
You mean, throwing money at this problem alone has not helped?
Democrats must be completely perplexed.
