President Obama has decided not to release any photos of Usama bin Laden's dead body, Fox News confirms, amid concern that doing so could inflame sentiment against U.S. troops.
The president revealed his decision during an interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes." A U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that Obama had decided against the release. The announcement follows a charged debate on whether the risk might outweigh the benefit if any images or video are released showing bin Laden after he was fatally shot by U.S. forces.

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. "We'll definitely release it" "No, it might make people mad we can't release it."

Dumb.. .all around dumb.

Why is it dumb, Vicchio?

I don't think the government should release a gory photo of a guy we assassinated, no matter how much he deserved it. If it were to be mysteriously leaked however...

When did Obama say they were definitely releasing it? This is the first I've heard from the whitehouse on whether they would release.

Kernel Sanders, why shouldn't the phote be available via internet as proof of Ladin's death? Obviously we have worse photos on the internet.

The indecision, the idiocy of it all. You don't say you're going to release a photo like this, then decide not too. You say "We're discussing the situation a decision as not been made".

It's... madness. Besides, the photo WILL leak out, eventually.

BRIAN WILLIAMS:
There is a report as we have this conversation, for the record, 10:36 a.m., that the President, the White House, has decided and, it may already be out, to release a proof of death photo. What light can you shed on this?
LEON PANETTA:
The government obviously has been talking about how best to do this, but I don't think there's-- there was any question that ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public. Obviously I've seen those photographs. We've analyzed them and there's no question that it's Bin Laden.
BRIAN WILLIAMS:
Were you debating how the release of a photo would go over, given its gruesomeness, versus the need on behalf of people all over the world to demand proof of death?
LEON PANETTA:
I think there's no question that there were concerns and there were questions that had to be debated about just exactly question kind of impact-- would these photos have. But the bottom line is that, you know, we got Bin Laden and I think we have to reveal to the rest of the world the fact that we were able to get him and kill him.

Doesn't bother me either way. I'd prefer it to be released, it's nothing we haven't seen in a slasher movie and the like.

Would make a nice T-shirt with Property of The Government of the United States of America on the front, and Since May 1, 2011... Property of Arabian Sea Frozen Foods Company with a box of fish sticks with said logo on the back.

Have you ever been president, Vicchio?

What is madness?

The photo might be leaked, but we don't know.

I don't care one way or the other, but the picture wouldn't satify those who doubt. Some folks will never accept anything.

Obama acted stupidly :ninja:
(let's see who gets the reference)

If you don't see the problem I see, nothing I say will change your mind.

Good decision.

A picture of a dead body would prove nothing. The conspiracy nuts would just say it was faked anyway. We don't need to see a gruesome picture to know that Bin Laden is dead.

The photos can just be leaked to the press.

Why don't you care? ... Why wouldn't a real picture work(?)... a picture with a person's face is far more concrete than a birth certificate. That's untrue; it's impossible to never accept anything as real.

It's not the NOT releasing I am bothered by.

It's the "Yes it will" then "No it won't" hem hawing. DUMB.

Vic... I think they are protecting the shooter, as he failed to nail Osama between the eyes. The guy really has to practice a little more.

I think that publishing photos of emenies you've killed is disrespectful. Smacks a bit too much of putting his head on a pike in front of the WH. There are conflicting issues in this case given the desire for proof, but I think publishing the photo would be in bad taste.

Leon Panetta's personal opinion being wrong is hardly Obama waffling.

One, he was shot in the head. Likely to cause some distortion. Two, I only have pictures I've seen as comparison, and those are not all that recent. And birthers have shown that no amount of evidence convinces the person who simply doesn't want to believe. Birthers, truthers, now proofers, will all find away to explain away all evidence. We've seen this constantly.

Now, I suspect the photo will make it out one way or another, but it won't settle anything for those who don't want to believe.

All presidents have "acted stupidly."

If you don't see the problem I see, nothing I say will change your mind.

What position is on my mind? It would be better of you to elaborate on the problem you see.

Good decision.

We may very well end up with a case of the Deathers.

Why is it disrespectful to publish a photo of a man who killed thousands, Kernel? A picture and a piked head are not the same. The photo can be verfied with facial-recognition technology, etc. Blood would have helped.

You may have a point, Boo.

Conspiracy theorists are impervious to fact and logic anyway. Birth certificate, where is the birth certificate? No, no, we meant the long form. No, no, that one has to be faked. You killed Bin Laden? So you say. Show us the proof. No, no, not that proof, the other proof. The moon landing was faked, you know, and the attack of 9/11 was an inside job for sure, and space aliens killed Kennedy, and every scientific organization in the world is behind the global warming hoax, and well, anything we choose to believe is ipso facto real and indisputable and anyone who says differently is just deluded. Bin Laden? Why, that doesn't look anything like him. For one thing, he doesn't have that hole in his head. That is obviously photoshopped.

You can't counter irrationality with empirical fact.

Very good, dittohead.

I disagree, though, one one point. I think they might name themselves Deathers instead of Proofers. It seems fitting.

It wouldnt really matter if they did release the picture. If anything it serves to not inflame even more hatred and rhetoric in the ME. Let it be. Some will always deny it. Hell we have pics of JFK on the slab and people still call the photos a fake.

It matters not...there are already tons of doctored 'dead' Osama photos out there.

This decision is like scoring a touchdown and running back to the sidelines as opposed to scoring a touchdown and showing your ass in front of the cameras. Full on approve.

Did you feel that way when the photos of American war crimes were released?
