The Nielsen Company, which takes TV set ownership into account when it produces ratings, will tell television networks and advertisers on Tuesday that 96.7 percent of American households now own sets, down from 98.9 percent previously.

You know, I believe that there is a better headline for this story:

IQ of America rises.

And, of course, one can take note that, with the advent of shows such as Dancing With the Network Whores, 2 Men and Charlie Sheen, The Apprentice to an Assbag Loser, Modern Dysfunctional Family, and other shows brought to you by Mickey Mouse and General Electric, this was bound to happen.

Feeling dumbed down these days? Don't like what's on TV? Really want out of all this idiocy? There is a simple solution, and it involves a sledgehammer. Just do it.

I find myself watching less and less broadcast TV, other than sports or an HBO mini-series here and there.

I can't tolerate the mess CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News puts out anymore. I used to watch it a lot.

Idiocracy rules the day.

Raise in Youtube bloggers=Even lower IQ.

I like televisions, I love films, but I also love non-fiction books and policy journals.

Uhh yeah if you think our collective IQ is increasing, I've got a bridge to sell you. Great location!

TV's on teh intarwebz. Duh.

This is it exactly. People are getting rid of their TVs because they have other ways to get the content now.

A few are possibly doing that. I don't know if a 2% drop could account for that, though. We have numerous devices that have had enormous success by just using newer means of content providing, and still have that delivered to our tv's.

Being that they are available online, like many other shows, I'm not sure a decrease in set ownerships actually denotes a decrease in programming viewership. But more likely highlights a shift in how people are accessing them

Perhaps the drop is attributable to the economic conditions in the US to a degree

People may have pawned their TV for food or rent
