Mn/DOT to test driver's 'mileage tax' | kare11.com

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is looking for 500 people to test technology that could someday be used to collect a mileage-based user fee.

Mn/DOT anticipates a fee on road usage might someday be necessary as more fuel efficient and hybrid cars are on the road, decreasing revenue from the gas tax.

The Minnesota Legislature appropriated $5 million from the trunk highway fund for the demonstration in 2007.

I wish they had given me the $5 million for an answer to this dilemma. Why don’t they just look at the odometer when the vehicle goes in for a smog check?

More tax dollars being wasted by brilliant government ideas.

We don't have smog checks here. You only go to the mechanic when you actually need something fixed.

Well there you go! If you don’t already have smog checks then the state can suck the life out of you that way while making your cars less reliable and more expensive to maintain.

Yeah you're gonna charge me taxes for when I'm NOT driving in the state? Hmm? Sorry friend but fail.

Of course, this entire idea is fail. Just wait till they decide "If you drive more then 100 miles in a week you're going to be charged an "Earth Tax" or some stupidity.

Umm...I already pay for the roads via taxes. They shouldn't be allowed to charge me again for the same damned thing.

No, I'm just looking to make a quick $5 mil. My idea was just as good as thier idea was. Well other than they don't smog in that state.

Well we'll have GPS tracking mileage and phones cover when we are on foot, and since many of us are most likely on the Obama enemies list I expect to be one of the first to be tracked because I do believe in and respect that document Obama seems to hate.

For you Liberals it's the Constitution.

Hopefully the scumbags proposing this idea will no longer have a job.

Alright, well, since this has nothing to do with Obama and not one liberal has posted in support of this, I'm going to go ahead and take a page straight out of your book.

Conservatives: this is your official representative now.

Sorry. C-man's rules. You get to label everyone you want with any action taken by anybody. This is gonna be great!

Yep, this tax is a load of bull****. We already pay for the roads, and gas tax, and insurance, it makes no ****ing sense.

One answer to people trying to skate out on their taxes is to tax hybrids on their mileage via the DMV registration form. The people driving the old gas hog cars shouldn't be imposed on for their free choices made, not if the people avoiding the tax are those buying the hybrids.

A simple line on the registration form, specific to low-mileage cars, "Odometer reading, date". Then they pay a fee equivalent to the tax on the gas they didn't buy.

You people certainly don't want to punish the people who aren't cheating on their taxes instead, right?

It's an even bigger waste than you think, as that tax has zero chance of ever becoming a law.

Oh yeah?

You got a choice about wearing that Death Strap the Congress forced Detroit to put in your car?

This is absurd. Gas taxes already cover road wear and even if you wanted to measure mileage there are much better ways to do this. Its absurd that anyone would even propose such a blatant violation of privacy with GPS tracking for such trivial BS. Whats next, getting cavity searched when you get on a city bus?

Well, figure it out, okay? Don't strain yourself, but a little gentle exercise won't do you any harm.

How are federal and state highway funds collected?

Ease into it, don't hurt yourself...highways are collected at the pump.

Now, this is could be difficult, but the curb is only two inches high...what is special about hybrid and "alternative fuel" vehicles?

That's right.

They don't consume as much gasoline for each mile travelled. Therefore the allegation is that the ultralight death traps are doing more damage per tax dollar collected than real cars.

Thus the tax addicts have a pretend excuse to implement a new control and monitoring scheme, and the enablers of the tax addicts will go along, except, of course, the usual enablers who are always demanding higher taxes on others have, for the most part, but clearly not all, have figured out that since they're the fools who bought into the hybrid fantasy they're the problem the tax addicts are trying to fix. So, even though they secretly agree, they're not going public with it.

It's funny how they're all for raising taxes until they discover it's their turn in the barrel.

Does that explain things for you, honey?

No, this assumption that the hybrid does more more road damage per mile traveled is obviously false, and the con men know this. If it was simply a function of miles travelled, these control freaks would have had super-taxes on motorcycles long long ago. The reality is that most of the damage is done by the heavy trucks and transports and the weather. Certainly all vehicles commit wear, a road is an infinite bearing race and as such simply cannot be built to withstand wear from traffic forever.

But .... the Mayor has never seen a tax addict give up on the victim once the seed has been planted....

I would think that this tax would be one libertarians would agree with. It is basically a usage tax. You use the roads a lot, you pay more. You use the roads less, you pay less. Those who use roads less aren't subsidizing those who use them more. Very libertarian... Snorkum seems to get it.

As a liberal, I like gas taxes. I think they should raise gas taxes to encourage a reduction in the use of oil, primarily for the purpose of energy security. They can lower taxes someplace else if they want... To make the conservatives happy. Meh! Who cares about the conservatives, raise gas taxes and give the extra revenue to energy industries that help our security. Bigger bang for the buck. I'm tired of always seeking ways to compromise.

Do you claim any exemptions on your taxes? Don't call it "cheating" on taxes because you are being dishonest with such descriptions.

I don't normally like to generalize, but I can say with confidence that there isn't a single libertiarian in existence who would suppport the governemnt rotinuely GPS tracking their car to collect a fricking tax.

Please tell me you aren't refering to seat belts.

He is. Common sense isn’t his gig. He is into being as pompous and offensive as possible to as many people as possible without sticking around to back up his claims.

But that isn't what the OP was suggesting. It was more like an 'odometer' tax, if I understood.

I have no problems with it, if every cent of road tax and all other taxes are removed from the price of gas at the pump. Double taxation isn't something any libertarian I know would support.

Just giving c-man a taste of his own medicine.

Of course, he probably watches that video and sees a perfectly reasonable person asking reasonable questions.
