House passes huge GOP budget cuts, opposing Obama - Yahoo! News

Republicans controlling the House pushed to passage on Friday a bold but politically dangerous budget blueprint to slash social safety net programs like food stamps and Medicaid and fundamentally restructure Medicare health care for the elderly.

The choice in the next election is becoming more and more clear. There is no question which party represents the interests of the wealthy and which party represents the interests of the rest of the country.

The GOP fought hard earlier to preserve tax cuts for those making over 250K. Today they showed how they want to pay for those cuts...by slashing money from food stamps, medicaid and medicare.

The GOP war on the elderly, the poor and the working class continues....

Unless the public somehow rallies behind this plan, the Republicans won't push it with the expectation of success. It's like going to Mexico: you offer 5$ for a souvenir and the clerk asks 15$ and you meet at 10$.

I really wish people could see why they are proposing cuts. I guess it doesn't matter to some that we are broke as a country.

Yeah, let's privatize Medicare, because as we've seen over the last few years, private companies are oh so responsible with other people's money...

And how exactly does staying on the same track fix our financial issues? You do know that the Federal Gov. borrows over $0.33 of each $1 it spends (and that's a lowballed guess), right?

I’m not sure how well this will go for the Republicans. Getting people to vote against their economic interests only works when economic issues are eclipsed by social fluff issues like gay marriage and abortion.

We DO see....which is why we didn't want to extend tax cuts over $250K. However, the Republicans fought to keep those tax cuts for their wealthy base and now...because of those tax extensions, want to take the money from seniors and the working class and those making well under 100K.

The writing on the wall is clear....The GOP is the party for those making over 250K. Everyone else should vote their pocketbook and support the Democrats.

It is possible that the GOP has gone too far, but face it, the Democrats have not gone far enough. Sure, we do need a social safety net, but at the same time, we are going to have to make some cuts. Taxing the rich by itself isn't going to balance the budget. What I would like to see is some dialogue that ends up somewhere between the Democratic and Republican extremes.

THE question of the 2012 campaign is gonna be---major entitlement reforms, do we need em or not?

republicans say yes

barack the slasher says no

seeya at the polls, pals

So, what you're telling me is that there is no middle ground between "current track" and "end Medicare?"

Republicans only care about cutting entitlements to the poor.

Most Republicans haven't seen a corporate welfare entitlement that they don't whole heartedly endorse

Republicans want tax reform that benefits the wealthy and cuts that hurt the most vulnerable, the elderly and the poor.

Anyone on social security, medicare/medicaid that votes Republican must have a hole in their head.

well it could be worse, we could keep going on the democrats spending spree and all become insolvent.

you guys were against the tax breaks applying to the people who already pay far too much of the tax burden because class warfare and demonizing the rich is how your dem masters buy votes

making the rich pay more will not change the destructive behavior of the american voter and the politicians that pander to them.

making those who already pay far more than they should only encourages the politicans to spend more and those who aren't chargedw with paying their share of the bills to reward those politicians with votes

dems want more and more people dependent on the government and beholden to dem politicians
ruining america by creating masses of welfare sucking junkies is the goal of the dems

At one point, when a generous tax break was about to expire, the head of GE's tax team met with Representative Charles Rangel, then chairman of the ways and means committee, and begged for an extension on one knee. Supposedly it was a joke, but GE got its extension, and Rangel got a $30 million gift for New York City schools.

leadership, anyone?

Actually the choise Is clear. One party will run this country into bankruptcy, to fund it's voter bribe schemes, and one party wants to keep the country solvent.

obama sure is dumb not to have seen the position he's put himself in

harry can never move on the inchoate mumblings delivered by the slasher in his excellent speech, his great speech

harry can't write it up, he can't write it down, he can't write left nor right

until harry puts some numbers on paper, the slasher's got squat

except campaign speeches, hyper partisan and divisive

americans want solutions, answers, to entitlements

americans know what's going on, all can see the planets colliding

and all can see the slasher talking

and doing squat

your move, harry

Correction: One party wants to be the working/middle class subservient to their wealthy base. Republicans don't get a rat's ass about the vast majority of this country.
If they had their way we would all be right-wing "Christians" and 1% of the population would control 99.9% of all the wealth in this country.

No....the GOP has clearly defined the issue for the 2012 race:

Do you support the corporate elite or do you support the working/middle class. Vote accordingly.
Any senior citizen that votes Republican in the next election is unwise.

Entitlements have to be dealt with one way or another. One option is to keep them running and forward the bill to future taxpayers. Another option is to privatize entitlements. A third option is to keep cutting benefits while raising taxes to make the ends meet. There is no solution without a catch.

By "entitlements" I'm sure that you are including the billions of entitlements in the form of corporate welfare that are handed out to big GOP donors every year, right?

And are you in favor of cutting food stamps, medicare and medicaid so that those earning over 250k can keep their tax cuts?

Disney, if oyu haven't figured it out yet, the Dem's "caring" is to give people that vote for them, other peoples money, or what is more the case now that the Dem's have "helped" so many, is to borrow money we can never pay back to stay in power.

What you and your ilk have done is promise other peoples money, and future generations money to bribe todays voters dumb enough to allow themselves to become slaves to the state.

Yes. 100%. Corporations provide jobs, and wealth, food stamps drain coffers and keep people dependent on the "state".

I meant exactly what I said. There are options ,each with a downside. My point was that the current way of running things should not be one of them. If entitlements go bankrupt noboby wins.
