Chicago school bans some lunches brought from home

Fernando Dominguez cut the figure of a young revolutionary leader during a recent lunch period at his elementary school.

"Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?" the seventh-grader shouted to his lunch mates in Spanish and English.

Dozens of hands flew in the air and fellow students shouted along: "We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!"

Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: "Do you see the situation?"

At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago's West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

Really, school lunches? they know better than you or I what we should feed our children? I think this is far out of bounds.

Wait. In what universe is the school lunch "better quality food" than, say, whatever is leftover in the drain of my sink? Because that's about what I remember from school.

I don't like this, while I favor only offering healthy choices at school, banning lunches from home is going a bit too far.

It really depends on the school, my school lunches were generally good, and my mom(who is a lunch lady) has brought home food from her school which was awesome.

Where is the ban on stupid people setting stupid school policies?

It would be a bit of a stretch, imho, to show that lunch from home is somehow disruptive to the learning environment.

I doubt this would stand if challenged.

Sometimes after eating Chipotle I become rather disruptive to my environment...

Gov't knows best children. i mean now that gov't is going to be paying for our healthcare they need to make sure we are eating right to keep cost down.

Now one school principal is representative of "government" as a whole?

That means I get to pick any one person to represent an opposing view, right?

If the parents have an issue with it I'm sure they could push through a change if they wanted.

Yeah this doesn't strike me as something that will hold up for very long.

I'm just saying, better get used to this. It's for the best after all.

You wanted the government to call all the shots. Well, you got it.

So when the little heavy set boy or girl walks into the lunch room and pours out 6 candy bars and 2 sugary soft drinks from their lunchbox, you think that is ok.

Should we allow these little kids to have cigarettes after their lunch too. After all why should the "government" be allowed to take away their smoking rights.

Good point. Unfortunately parenting 'seems' to be failing for many children.

Isn't there some more reasonable middle ground?

Call child services if you think the parent is neglectful, telling me what I feed my child is not the answer. (we eat about 80% paleo, it woudln't fly if the goverment dictated what I eat).
