BOSTON (CBS) – Mayor Tom Menino issued an executive order to ban the sale of sugary drinks on Boston city property on Thursday.
The mayor’s office said Menino is issuing this order because of the link between sugary drinks and rising obesity rates and health care costs.
Back in 2004, Menino banned soda and junk food from being sold in public school vending machines, and now he’s taking his battle city-wide.
“I want to make this a healthier choice, the easier choice in people’s daily lives, whether it’s the schools, the work sites or other places in the community,” Menino said.
The mayor hopes the city takes steps over the next six months to phase out the sale of sugary beverages on city property.

This has to be one of the most useless, dumb and frankly ignorant things I've ever heard of a Mayor doing.

The food police are out in force this week.

I think this is stupid. Obesity is a problem, but you aren't going to solve it by getting rid of sugary drinks on city property.

Perhaps the mayor should first eliminate the sugary drinks from hiw OWN property.

This is going to be the order of the day soon and everywhere.

The Mayor is a Liberal and they all seem to be of the Nanny State mentality.

After all no one in the public has two brain cells to rub together and Liberal politicians can think for you much better than you can think for yourself.

The 68 year old Mayor is not a skinny little guy himself.

Did you happen to notice how there weren't any liberals here expressing support for the idea?

It's somewhat draconian and more of a statement than anything. I'd rather economics of food were changed to make healthier foods cheaper than the obesifying ones.

Slashing corn subsidies would do this nicely. It's the reason Pepsi is half the price of milk.

I have no problem with banning it from schools or municipal facilities that cater to children, but in public/government workplaces where it is mostly adults? No, way over the top. I would love to see responsible adults be more responsible in their food choices (including the mayor) but it isn't up to the government to tell adults what they may and may not purchase...

According to the House and Senate and President, yes it is. Don't believe me, ask any supporter of Obamacare.

You think I care what they say? Perhaps Menino should lead by EXAMPLE! Look at HIS waistline... I consume sports drinks somewhat regularly and drink sweetened green tea on a regular basis. It isn't ENTIRELY about what one consumes, it is how much and overall activity... The mayor is WAY out in left field... so far out there, he is under the Citgo sign...

(I know you are being sarcastic, but it has to be said)

E-85 is under your definition of successful?

:thumbdown

I'm just of the conviction that corn subsidies have traditionally had alot more to do with something other than environmentalism.

Another leftist environmental plan gone wrong, I know this first hand.

E-85 FTL

Please. Republicans pander to the corn lobby just as much as Democrats. It has nothing to do with environmentalism.

Oh really? Considering corn subsidies never took place until E-85...please don't tell me E-85 wasn't an environmental issue.

And what would that be?
