U.S. to pull strike jets from Libya mission

Bush went on more vacations than anyone else, he ran a military campaign into the ground through stupidity and poor planning, he wasted tons of money and significantly increased the deficit. Just like Obama. Peas in a pod. The fact that some would endorse Bush but condemn Obama only goes to show that individual's hypocrisy.

And yet Iraq was a victory for the free world and the Iraqi people.

BTW, I support 0bama's intervention in Libya and always have. My criticisms are about the way he's fighting it.

I had/have lots of problems with the way Iraq and Afghanistan were handled.

lefties not being able to take the valid criticisms of 0bama speaks for itself.

Is it? Then we can leave Iraq in full right now and everything will be cool, huh? Let's do it. Let's get out of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and all the rest. The United States government was never granted the power to be the World's police. It's not in the Constitution. We have dangerously expanded government (I find it funny that many so called conservatives support such broad and questionable increases in government size and power) and engaged in behavior which has lost us American lives and has put America even further in debt to the Chinese. American lives are not worth the freedom of others. Not only is the government not authorized to engage in these offensive, imperialistic type wars and police action; but by betraying our values and principles in this manner we will only work to weaken the Republic.

The people of South Korea would disagree.

So would the millions who live in free nations today because of the US and our allies.

"imperialistic type wars" This says it all.

Yay...one example. And it still doesn't address the issues of debt, expense, expanded government, loss of our life for things which aren't our problems, etc. So instead we have to bitch about cutting NPR (which will have zero affect on our debt and spending) so that we don't talk about places where cuts would produce actual results...like cutting out our world police action which our government was never authorized for.

Yay...one example.

Yeah, S. Korea is the only nation to benefit from America's defense of oppressed people.

It's not like we've been doing this for years or anything.

Then sick your head in the sand and hope it all goes away.

jihadis are hoping you will do exactly that.

Jihadis ain't gonna take down America. They can't take away our rights our our liberties. Our government can if we do not constrain it properly.

How does that sand taste?

Huh? The US is no longer going to participate in the air strikes in Libya? WTF?

The US will only conduct strike missions "to back up the allies in case of need" but not participate on a regular basis apparently. I support the President on Libya but this is a major mistake that may very well doom his stated policy.

What do you guys think about this?

U.S. to pull strike jets from Libya mission

BRUSSELS — The U.S. military was pulling its warplanes from front-line missions Monday and shifting to a support role in the Libyan conflict, officials said.

Britain, France and other NATO allies will now provide the fighter jets for intercept and ground-attack missions that enforce a no-fly zone over this North African country.

The hand-over is expected to take place later Monday, a NATO official said.

“There won’t be a capabilities gap,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of regulations.

Another official, who could not be named for the same reason, said the U.S. would continue to play a major role in the operation, with one of the largest national contingents. Most U.S. planes will perform support tasks, leaving offensive tasks to their NATO allies.

In Washington, Defense Department spokesman Navy Capt. Darryn James said U.S. activity will formally end at 2200 GMT (6 p.m. EDT). U.S. aircraft currently account for 90 of the 206 planes deployed by NATO in the Libyan conflict.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Congress last week the U.S. would continue to provide assets that others don’t have in sufficient numbers. These will likely include AWACS air surveillance planes, electronic reconnaissance aircraft and aerial refueling tankers.

American air power — including Air Force AC-130 gunships and A-10 Thunderbolts, and Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers — will still be available to back up the allies in case of need.

Western jets have been hitting the forces of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi for more than two weeks. They initially targeted anti-aircraft missile defenses and quickly crushed a government offensive by destroying a large number of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery and other vehicles advancing into rebel-held areas.

But military experts say Gadhafi’s forces have rapidly reorganized since then, shedding their heavy armor and relying on light forces to repeatedly ambush the lightly armed rebels.

NATO said its aircraft flew 154 sorties over Libya on Sunday, the fourth day since the alliance assumed full control over the mission from the U.S.-led international force. It described 58 of those flights as “strike sorties.”

NATO does not release information on the number of targets bombed.

In the first four days of the NATO operation, alliance aircraft have flown a total of 701 sorties, the statement said.

Flights by fighters and attack jets accounted for 40 percent of that total. The rest are by AWACS surveillance aircraft, aerial refueling tankers, maritime patrol planes, search and rescue helicopters, and other support aircraft.

Associated Press writer Pauline Jelinek in Washington contributed to this report.

If the Arab world wants it's freedom, they are going to have to demonstrate it by shouldering the burden themselves. I agree with Obama pulling out. In fact, I disagree with Obama for initiating this action in the first place.

Koreans have a different mindset, Ron....

In the Middle East....a completely story unfolds because there isn't a single Arab country that gives a **** for the US, or possesses the least bit of enduring gratitude or would remain a friend of the US one second longer than they needed our money or protection, Ron...get real

Include Kuwait in that whole corrupt bunch. Their gratitude to the US ends the second it is in their interest to become opposed to us.

Being opposed to the US and actively attacking us are two different things.

The Kuwaiti government and monarchy are not supporters of jihad. If all the nations in the ME were like Kuwait things would be al lot more peaceful. Difficult but peaceful.

We seem to be having the same discussion in every thread.

Ron -

I'll jump on Kuwait, but for a sec

What happen to be the nationailty of the majority of the 9-11 terrorists? Which country does provide more funds each year than any other muslim country for spreading radical islam in the form of wahabism throughout the world?

Which country gives a **** about democratic elections, human rights or womens equality? And finally, which country gets despite of all this the biggest share of modern US arms- not single loader rifles, but airplanes, missle technology and military personal training?

On Kuwait...Kuwait hasn't given weapons to terrorists. Money, yes. Guns, no.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia have been repeatedly attacked by jihadis. There's a reason for that.
